This song is definitely on the top of my favorite songs from Voces8. Just so ethereal and beautiful, and immediately put me back to Lord of the Rings theme. As a choir singer I really appreciate you reacted to all these wonderful groups!! Thank you for the analysis!
Choir is my life! I stepped away from it for a few years and it was a big mistake. I am enjoying analyzing these amazing groups!!
I especially love the choice for limited to no vibrato. These days we almost view vibrato as a necessity but when it's done perfectly, you cannot help but appreciate it.
Thanks for your reactions and comments. I particularly appreciate that you point out some of the subtle magics of choral singing. Anyone can say "oh my goodness, these folks are so beautiful!" But you've helped us understand why, listen more closely, and appreciate it more deeply.

It SOUNDS like it was composed by Howard Shore, but it isn't. It was written, composed and was sung by ENYA. It shows the genius of Enya, that she created such a masterpeace that fits so perfectly to Howard Shore's soundtrack, to Middle Earth and the whole fantasy atmosphere. Enya herself is so otherwordly and sooo beautiful. You should react to her, too!
The main motifs from 'May It Be' and 'Concerning Hobbits' are nearly identical.
All three closing songs, May it Be by Enya, Gollum's Song by Emiliana Torrini, and Into the West by Annie Lennox, are absolute masterpieces.
She is a great composer, but a horrible singer. This is not bad per se. She is a "studio singer", whose sound depends on the technology

You need a composer who composes the special chorus arrangement. I assume it has been especially composed for VOCES8, because classical chorus arrangements are with 4 and not 8 parts.
Can we just stop and also appreciate the bass? Some stunning moments from Johnny in there. He recently left the group. 😢 You should go see them live sometime, Nick. They tour a lot and are super approachable after concerts. We’ve seen them live 3 times. About the tuning, they often use just intonation rather than even temperament, so that’s why their resonance is so dialed in (not sure if it was just or even on this one). Blake Morgan did a YT video in 2020 about this intonation type. Fascinating.
Howard Shore suggested Enya for writing and singing the song for the movie's end credits to Peter Jackson, or should we say he "insisted" on her. My first time hearing her was when they used "Boadicea" for the opening scene of the 1992 horror film Sleepwalkers. I knew of Howard Shore because he was the composer for many of David Cronenberg's films
The multi-national symphonic metal band The Dark Side Of The Moon made a cover of May It Be, featuring Dutch singer Charlotte Wessels (former lead singer of the symphonic metal band Delain). Of course it's not ethereal like the original or the Voces8 version but still quite uplifting and encouraging, also not unnecessary heavy (as you would expect from a band that has a harp player as a permanent member).

They're excellent, and after pulling this apart while transcribing, I found the very discreet stitching done by a masterful sound engineer.
Can you do the full cover of this song. I love your voice it heals me from depression.
Can I also suggest another track of Voces8 but this time with an orchestra, The Saddest Noise by Christopher Tin, superb.

Vocal Ensemble is the Holy Grail of singing. It only works if everybody is perfectly on pitch. Otherwise, you would immediately get a beat. Also, you have to be perfectly in dynamic. Otherwise, you will hear out single voices.
I love the video of taking the Hobbits to Isengard. This is beautiful
you know what really annoys me to death these days...people who think they have to dissect everything and make it about them and somehow like they have any part in something beautiful someone else created. This is not even specifically about this very video or guy but also (and that's even worse) people who film tjemselves and their reaction to whatever)
There is no vocal coach or anyone else needed for this beautiful piece of music Voces8 created, can't people just leave beauty be and hit the tune of an individuals soul just like it is? Do we really need to get spoonfed the opinion of just anyone who hasn't anything to do with the original thing? No, I personally think we don't.

Right. The films are just an incomplete adaptation of the book. So many aspects which were omitted.
i don't mind the LOTR movies but i would say: if you haven't read the books, read them! lol
