My mentality for completing games even if I'm not enjoying it all that much is that I personally feel it's important to play some 6/10s or 7/10s every now and then to really make the 9s and 10s hit even harder. Not to mention sometimes those 6/10s can surprise you with some really quirky gameplay even if it doesn't come fully together in the end.

Yeah i agree but it depends if that 6 or 7 is scratching an itch. If the game is not what you are looking for nor does it have that quality attached to it, sometimes its better to just move on

This is super relatable to me.
I've struggled with my backlog for way too long, so for anyone who needs help with it, here's what's working for me:
    - Make a list! I have a list with games that I really want to play and have HowLongToBeat times on there so I can see how long they'll be. It's always a nice feeling to be able to cross something off your list.
    - Don't force yourself to finish games. If you're 15 hours into a big game and you've had your fun out of it and can't be bothered to play more, just cross it off the list. If you were want to play it again, you still can, no need to leave it on your backlog. I've had games that I played 2/3 of and then crossed them off of my list and never thought of them again.
    - As Lewis said in the video, play one game at a time. It's more likely that you'll put a game down when you play something else inbetween. So try to check that you have enough time for a single game without a new game coming out while you play it. (that's where the HLTB times from the list come in for me)

Dealing with a long backlog is definitely an intimidating and overwhelming process, especially when you have a lot of games across several consoles, many generations back.
I’ve personally found that focusing on one game at a time is the best way for me to go about it. Also canceling subscription services (Gamepass, PS Plus, etc.) to finish games so that I don’t get ahead of myself and start downloading other games unless the next game in my backlog is on the service and cheaper to play rather than paying the game’s full price. I also like to mix my backlog a little bit so I’ll usually play a ~50hr open world game on PS5 followed by a ~10hr platformer on the ps2, etc.

I have a two game system that works well to push through a backlog.
I base what I'm playing based on how much time I have for a gaming session.
If I have more than a few hours, I play the big game I'm currently working on.
If I only have a bit of time to play, maybe an hour or two, I play a smaller game where it's easier to play short sessions. Something like a Boomer Shooter, Rogue Like, or something a long those lines.
Playing one game I find that a lot of the time I end up just not playing because I don't have the time to invest in getting something done in a bigger title.
This way I can play when I feel like it and still work through my backlog without getting so distracted that I don't finish a bigger game.

  • @musguera

The things you said I already do, playing one game at a time is key. But I could add some things that I think may help some people, I'm reducing my backlog for many years now.
    1. List all the games you have on all platforms and select what you are really want to play. Seeing all games in one place you will probably see that some games are really not worth your time (many games in fact). Playnite is very good for this.
    2. Know how much time you have to play on average and use How Long to Beat to see play times for all the games you listed to play. With good and old excel you can calculate how much time your backlog is (mine is 5 years now, it was bigger before!).
    3. Categorize the list of games you want to play (I do by priority, you can do by genre or other things) and diversify the genres of games you play (I will never play a big RPG after the other, you can play some smaller games between them). After all you will play one game at a time.
    4. Be picky, if you already have a huge backlog don't buy average games, just those that you are really hyped about and have both critical and puclic acclaim. My personal rule also is buy only if I will play the game right now, I don't buy games to add them to my backlog. If you are not playing a game right now, you can get it on a deeper sale later when you play it.
    5. Before buying new games always look at your backlog and see if you already have one game that you rather play first. Remember to only buy games you will play right now.

I really love short games for this very reason. Games like Undertale, Katana ZERO, Celeste and The Portal games on switch have kept me through til the end because of how short, sweet and succinct they are.
I’ve been trying to get better about not finishing games. I’m slowly but surely getting better at it.
    My biggest tips would be:
    1. Try limiting yourself to only playing one of two games at a time. If you limit yourself to only one, you’re bound to get burnt out, so it helps to have a fallback if you get bored of your primary.
    2. Try limiting yourself to only the games you’ve started at first, and then only allow yourself to move onto another when you have finished your current game or games to satisfaction. The desire to play the new thing will help you get through it faster, even if you might not get to it right on launch day.
    3. Don’t be afraid to stop playing if you get bored of a game. If it truly isn’t for you, then stop and move onto something that hooks you a little better. You don’t need to keep playing something just because you bought it.
    4. I personally made a Google Spreadsheet of all the games I have on my different consoles, as well as my rate of completion satisfaction. One column is for just finishing the game, and the other is for finishing it 100% if applicable. I change the color of the box from red to green once the game is finished, and being able to see a long list of green boxes is really satisfying in and of itself. It’s a physical manifestation of your progress.
    5. This might not work for everyone, but try cutting out live service or MMO games. They are massive time sinks that can never be beaten. While that’s what some people prefer or need in between big games, sometimes it just takes time away from your backlog being addressed.

My ADHD has me jumping games A LOT. And when I get burned out on a game it takes me a really long time to feel motivated to pick it back up. I've accepted that I wont beat all my games, but as long as I put enough time into them I can feel justified in getting my money's worth before putting them down due to burnout or boredom. This is after I've been shamed for my game jumping habit. "Why are you buying another game, finish the ones you have." Man, I'm 29 years old with ADHD. I will get enjoyment out of my games however I want to. At least, that's what I tell people who try to shame me.

For me personally, I usually focus on one game at a time everyday depending on what other stuff I had to do. Sometimes, I play other games if I needed to take a break from playing that game. One example is that I’m currently playing LEGO Star Wars The Skywalker Saga and then I tried out SpongeBob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated and it was really good. I heard great things about SpongeBob Squarepants Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated. It has really great platforming elements to it. I didn’t play the original before, but the remake was fun to play. Other thing I want to talk about is live service games. Live service games such as Fall Guys and Fortnite gives you lot of time to play. Their servers never gets shut down due to how many players are playing it. It will take a lot time playing a live service game, but focusing on other games to play and not doing other stuff outside of gaming. It’s important to take a break from gaming every few hours especially when playing a live service games.

Let me tell you my story. Two major things are going to happen today.
    1. After 3+ years, I am going to finally beat Breath of Fire IV (PS1) because I’m at the final dungeon.
    2. I am finally going to resume playing Final Fantasy VII: Remake (PS4). The last time I played it was summer 2020 (50% storyline progress), nearly 3.5 years ago!
Let me tell you why. I have been playing retro games for the past 16+ years on several laptops I have owned since then (especially PS1 RPGs that I never played and are top rated). I mainly play the emulators when I'm free at work. Since 2020, my work has never been the same again; it has been insanely busy non stop. I started Breath of Fire IV that year and almost have no time to play it at work, I leave my laptop at work. Summer 2020 is also the time that Valorant was released. I've been playing Counter-Strike since 1999. I got addcited to Valorant and never played anything else for 3.5 years. I reached a rank in Valorant that I was very satisfied with but I eventually lost it when the new seasons come, and I tried my best to do whatever possible to get that rank back. I'm basically at the border before that rank. I would play like 3000+ hours since then, and I am literally running in circles. No matter what I did, my rank goes up and it goes down every single day. It's constant back and forth with fustration and just barely almost gets the goal rank. A chunk of my life just playing like that. It hit me last week, "I'm done. What the actual f*** am I doing with my life right now? This game literally has ZERO progession, literally back to square one after 3000+ hours. I'm done." RPGs don't work this way, your time is always progress no matter what through it be storyline or improvement of your characters. I know I'm dumb for discovering this but I literally just found out retro handheld consoles is a thing, and it's been out for several years now. I just found this out like 2 months ago and have been watching and reading about them every single day. I cannot believe such a thing exists. This is going to COMPLETELY change my retro gaming, and I will never use a laptop ever again to emulate. Today will be a farewell, the very last time ever playing on my laptop. So the past couple weeks, I have been bringing home my laptop from work to try to beat BOF4 before I get my handheld console. I only emulate old games below PS2 so I absolutely do not care about the Steam Deck and it's size. I also discovered that these consoles can use mini HDMI out or casting to playing on a TV! WTF. Then I discovered PS Play (remote play) that the devices can do. So that is why I'm back on FF7R. For Christmas, my wife got me the handheld I've been wanting so bad, the Anbernic RG405M.

I usually do 1 RPG and 1 action game at the same time, don't start another game until you finish one of those, that's the key to feeling satisfied with your time investment. I do try and change long and short games though

Yeah the way the backlog builds, Id say its impossible to play everything I want to play. I have this mentality of playing a different genre for every game I play so I dont get burnt out.
The only games I get burnt out on are open worlds and if I do play one, I usually play small games in between.
Most of the time one at a time is my mentality, otherwise Id be overwhelmed and not finish anything. My thoughts are 'hypothetically if I were to not to finish anything what would be the point?'.

Yep. Spot on. I rarely ever start a new game before finishing another. where it really became hard is recently with dark souks 2. Im so close to finishing. but im just over the punishing bosses atm. Sick of it. Its no longer enjoyable to the point i probably wont play DS3. So i took a break and am playing fallout 3 for the first time.

How id handle the backlog is if it looks better than your favourite game play it other wise why waste the time. E.g if your favourite game is hitman and your looking at an indie game about a side scrolling assassin then why do you even care. But if it’s hitman and your looking at playing Spider-Man ps4 those can be argued to which one is better

One of the problems rn that I'm facing is that most games nowadays are rpgs and it's really hard to grind so you can progress
Ubisoft is a big example cause for some reason when they make a game like assassin's creed or far cry or ghost recon they just turn it into an RPG when the franchise originally wasn't
It's not fun to grind even though the game looks fun to play
I don't mind playing Skyrim because it with its rpg elements it does give you the role playing aspect and not some grinding game
Sometimes I'm just glad that games like red dead or gta exist cause it doesn't rely too much on rpg

    • @huevonesunltd
      @huevonesunltd Год назад

Most modern RPGs do not "require" you to grind at all not even in the highest difficulty, and when they actually do then we are talking about a pretty bad game (or a gacha game or a MMO) , if you get good enough at these games you can get by and finish it without ever needing to grind at all, learning to play the games in such a way actually is faster than grinding and usually these skills translate to other RPGs or games with RPG mechanics

    • @Spider10v

@@Spider10v like i said, that's rare nowadays for progression unless its an MMO or something like that.
most of the time it is not required , unless you are talking about farming certain items rather than grinding experience to beat some boss or something.
most of the time its just people being bad at RPGs, games that really require to grind are often really badly designed RPGs but these are rare these days.

I honestly don't see the point of a "Gaming Backlog", so even less a guide to handle it. We play to enjoy the experience, not to complete games so we can cross from a list. So for me the point is to play for as long as it makes me happy, one game at a time. If I dislike the game, I just stop playing. This happened to me with the so-claimed Tears of the Kingdom. I played for 10h. I found myself playing it for the sake of making worth what I paid for it, I just resold it losing 10€. Is that bad? I don't think so. Our time, esp. the older we get, is very limited. So let's play for joy. Let's maximize quality, and not quantity

@Lewis Rex Yeah, it's definitely not for everyone, and I can understand some of the aspects that are disliked, but it's one of my favourites tbh.
There's always been distaste towards this game, far less now compared to release, and more people are actually experiencing the game fully rather than just missing it due to bad reviews which I think is great.
The soundtrack and combat were some of my favourite aspects of the 13 trilogy. I didn't mind the characters too much, but I can understand the complaints there too haha.
