This film kind of came across to me as a greatest hits album of the original trilogy. From the start on a desert planet (although Tattoine seems positively idyllic compared to Jakku), Han in the Ben role, Maz's place evoking both Mos Eisley and Cloud City, as well as Maz herself having a bit of a Yoda vibe, and the Starkiller attack evoking the second Death Star a lot more than the first. Also, Kylo killing Han was like a dark mirror to Vader saving Luke - where Vader turns against the dark side to save his son, Kylo completes his journey toward it by killing his father.
Chewie seemed much more of an equal than a sidekick in this film. I liked it.
The Force seems more supernatural than it ever has before.
I loved how instantly Finn and Poe bonded, as well as Rey and Finn's gushing praise to each other after fighting the TIE's.
An elephant in the room for this film was always going to be how its dark side Force user would live up to Darth Vader, so I think it was a genius choice to make that an in character dilemma for him.

It's only what people who haven't been paying attention have said. I mean, how many Jedi have talked about balance for 6 previous movies and how many HUNDREDS upon HUNDREDS of books? There are no Jedi. Someone is obviously going to be in tune with the force intuitively far more than anyone else. Anakin was intuitively using the force to quicken his reflexes to pod race as a child. So was Luke flying through Beggars canyon and bullseyeing womprats. And for Anakin that was with lots of other jedi out there. For Luke even there were two extremely powerful Jedi still around. For Rey, there are none. At all. (Luke doesn't count for reasons). It is literally explained by the canon films and the EU.

I know most people think things started going off the rails in the next movie, but, really, many of the problems in the subsequent movies (and TV series) were set up right here from the start, IMO, so I don't know why this one still tends to get a free pass 🤷‍♂ (and it goes beyond the fact that the plot is mostly just a rehash of ANH's and all the shallow, pandering nostalgia-baiting). You've got the utter lack of exposition between Eps. VI & VII, numerous crucial plot points having happened off-screen between VI & VII (thus having to introduce flashbacks, even though none of the first 6 movies had any -- thus creating an internal storytelling inconsistency within the saga), the virtually non-existent world-building, returning OT characters all doing things that run contrary to their established character arcs and where we last left them, the often more modern/MCU-esque dialogue (as opposed to the stylized '30s/'40s movie speak of Eps. I-VI) and humor, taking the laws of both the Force and hyperspace into highly questionable directions, the general feeling of there not being any real stakes, the lack of any new and distinct/unique sounds, incredibly clunky combat and (especially) lightsaber duel choreography, no new spacecraft/weaponry/militia/etc. (all just slightly modified stuff from the OT), totally non-descript planets (again, more repeated OT stuff), boring costume and art designs, uninspired alien and creature designs that mostly don't really look all that Star Wars-y, alien characters being almost completely relegated to the background, bland/vaguely-written new characters, the reappearance/overinflated importance of items from the OT that we really never should've seen again (Anakin's/Luke's old lightsaber, Vader's remains, etc.), painfully self-aware/virtually fourth wall-breaking winks to Eps. I-VI (IV-VI especially), the list goes on...
I won't even touch Han's totally undignified, largely shrugged-off death.

Agree with most of your points, but to be fair - even before the Disney era, a lot of additional Star Wars content was rehashing the old formula over and over again.
Empire builds ANOTHER super weapon, ANOTHER drama connected to the Skywalker family and friends, ANOTHER superweapon, welp, there's the Skywalker clan again... in that regard, the sequels were right in line.
That's why the series work so well for the most part, as they show us the underbelly of Star Wars - they use the main story line just as background, but let the stories (for the most part) work for themselves (Kenobi, as per definition, being a bit of an outlier here) and just give us minor intersections with the "same old, same old" things in Star Wars.

Otherwise, he made a point in giving us new and different elements in all the subsequent movies he made, as opposed to giving us the same old shit the way Jar Jar Abrams and his shallow 'mystery box' gimmick did.

@@ComeOnIsSuchAJoy Now don't go all protective of the pre-Disney era here, there was plenty of rehashing the same bullcrap we got in the Disney sequels back in the old movies.
The "let's build another Death Star" trope is purely on the shoulders of Lucas with Return of the Jedi, and it just snowballed back when Lucas & Co were still in charge. The Maw Installation with another Death Star and the Sun Crusher, the World Devastator, the Galaxy Gun - all of that was in the nowadays highly lauded EU and should be just as ridiculed by fans as Starkiller Base, but the (definitely deserved) Disney hate train just conveniently leaves these things out and bashes TFA as if ANOTHER empire superweapon, ANOTHER mysterious nondescript superpowered Force user, ANOTHER last minute fighter incursion, etc. were something Star Wars would never do were it not for Disney.

I won't even touch Han's totally undignified, largely shrugged-off death.

your point is dead on at the end. How does she know how to use the force so well, with zero training? How does she know the mind control trick with no examples in her life to base it on? How does she know how to fight with a lightsaber, shouldn't she be just as inept as Finn? It goes DOWNHILL from there with the trailing movies.

That was the lightsaber that Luke lost on Empire Strikes Back when his hand was cut, the one which was originally built by Anakin. Someone found it on Bespin after his fight with Vader, and it was sold and resold until it reached Rey.
I, and I believe many of old Star Wars fans as well, had so much hope for this sequel trilogy. The main problem is that the producers never had a clear vision about the kind of story they wanted to tell with it, so it went all over the place. Beautiful visuals, but no soul. They are not that bad, but they could be so much better than they were, it was really disappointing.
Trivia: the trooper that Rey mind tricks to let her escape was played by Daniel Craig, at the time the actor who was the official James Bond. :) Prince William and Prince Harry also played troopers on this movie, but their scene was cut from the final edit.

Some fun facts: You mentioned to frequency of arms being removed in Star Wars films. In a deleted Bar scene, the Junk dealer from Jakku who gives "half portions" catches up with the gang in the bar. The dealer Unkar Plutt (played by Simon Pegg) pisses off Chewie by poking at Chewies wounded arm. So Chewie rips off Plutt's arm. Don't want to anger a Wookie. In the final scenes right before Rey takes off, in the crowd scene C-3PO's has his normal gold back. That's more Clone Wars spoilers, I'm afraid. Also, Mark Hamill was originally gonna appear in the film earlier, but I think he asked to not have Luke be shown until the end, and I think the buildup to seeing him in this movie at last after so long was worth it, and the Skywalker theme music playing was like, "Aw, hell yeah." This movie did really well in the box office, as did the other two films, though maybe not AS well as this one. 23:36 the first of many wtf moments in this trilogy.
30:29 Leia ignoring Chewie and hugging Rey… another wtf moment.
33:12 Rey is what’s referred to as a “Mary Sue”, she has these powers out of nowhere, no training (the combat training can be explained away by her fending for herself as a scavenger for 15-20 years, but the Force… uh-uh!), no explanation, just *poof* - mind tricks.
I remember seeing this in cinema… hard to forget, I was severely ill that morning, forced myself to go to work having booked my ticket for after my shift, got told “you look like s**t, go home” (always nice when even your manager is that honest 😂), managed to get to the cinema later and sit through it without any further 🤮 moments, and thinking at the end “this was very similar to Ep. IV, I’m ok with it, but I would’ve liked something different.”
It set up so much potential… I’ll just say that IMO the following 2 sequels let that potential go out the window at light speed. But absolutely judge it for yourself.

Addie, I won't spoil your journey through the next 2. I've enjoyed many of your reactions. Although this is my first comment. I certainly love the way you react to some of my favorite movies. That said, it's not the movie I didn't like. There are over 20 years of novels (now referred to as Legends) that when Lucas allowed original stories to be told, he had a mandate that ALL the novels be canon to every story previously written. So with over 20 years of continuous stories and character development, many fans hoped to see some of that universe that was created. Kathleen Kennedy through the books out the window and ignored an entire universe of stories that the fans loved.
That is my main point of contention. But, since you're not aware of the Legends, I'll be interested in your reactions and take. I'll comment on episode 9 to give you my take on the entire trilogy. Thanks and keep up your journey. 😊😊

I have been a Star Wars fan my entire life. My father took me to see it when it came out in London a couple of days after Christmas I was almost 5 years old. The Star Wars figures and ships were the majority of my toys in my childhood. Back in the day we used to have to wait for these movies to be played on the big screen or they would play them at special times of the year like Christmas. This is before people had video tapes and then DVDs and now being able to stream it at your convenience, so it was only certain times of the year I could watch my heroes. I would get the TV Guide and mark out the date and time to make sure I did not miss it. First, it was Star Wars then several years later, the Empire strikes back, and finally the return of the Jedi. These were some of the cornerstones of my childhood. When he did the prequel’s it was a little different, but it was still Star Wars. They Disney took control of the franchise. I have to admit when they first took control. I was excited as they have created things like pirates of the Caribbean, which I was a big fan off. So to hear a big company with lots of money, taking control of the franchise I was looking forward to seeing what they would create.. the first film I saw was rogue one I thought it was a different take, but really enjoyed it. The only thing I felt, was missing to make it feel like Star Wars to me was John Williams is music. But overall it was an enjoyable movie. Then I heard about the new trilogy and it was going to bring back the original characters. It was like all of my childhood. Christmases came at the same time. I watched the first movie. The one you watched in this reaction came out of the cinema, confused and disappointed. It had so many elements from a new Hope it just felt like a rip off, but the story was shockingly. Bad from dialogue to character development and even though it’s a fictional movie aspects of it made no sense. I also feel like they disrespected my childhood heroes. They turned them into a big bunch of losers and failures. Do you only part of this movie that was any good whatsoever was John Williams’s music. The rest of it completely heartbroken and disappointed by it.. as for the two movies that followed it. Well they’re just pure shit…. As a result of this and the disrespect for the characters, the franchise and the fans, are you avoid everything to do with Disney they will not receive a penny from me for the rest of my life. I find what they did was immensely unforgivable they took away my childhood heroes, my last chance to see them all again on the big screen larger than life, and they turned these legends into disgruntled failures.

The expressions that cross Rey's face as she gives him the lightsaber are amazing.
I for one didn't find anything wrong with Rey being so strong and knowing how to do things with the Force. She'd heard stories, and it needed her and called to her. The whole story of the Force is like that. That's what happened with Luke: he had 15 minutes blindfolded with a training ball on the Falcon, and then he was able to destroy the Death Star with his eyes closed.
What happens in ep 9 with her heritage was unnecessary. JJ Abrams said after Ep 7 and before ep 8 that her story was to find herself without a simple answer by any family ties. It would have been better that way, but the whole series is about retconning and recycling old story elements.
The bad guys didn't have any idea who they were dealing with, trying to get her to turn to the dark side. This is the kid, alone on Jakku, who was willing to go hungry so that the little 'droid she'd just met could stay free.
She certainly didn't need any obstacle course physical exercise training. Every day of her life had been that, and she had a big, good heart. Not ever a jedi (she didn't have a bit of their old-school official training), but she was _better_ at heart than any of them.

The lightsaber that Maz Katana hands over to Rey is not Luke's most current lightsaber, (the green one he built for Episode 6: Return of the Jedi), rather it is the one that Anakin Skywalker / Darth Vader used in his duel with Obi Wan Kenobi on Mustafar. After Obi Wan cut off Anakin's limbs, as he was leaving he picked up Anakin's blue lightsaber. At the beginning of Episode 4: A New Hope, Obi Wan passes the blue lightsaber to Luke who uses it until Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back. (So Darth Vader / Anakin Skywalker would have recognized his old lightsaber being wielded against him.) In the scene when Darth Vader cuts off Luke's hand, both the hand and blue lightsaber are lost. There are E.U. stories about what became of Luke's hand, and Maz indicates that there is a good story about how she came into possession of the lightsaber as well, but she says it's a story for another time.

For me, Kylo Ren is one of the most fascinating characters in Star Wars. Just because he's not vader 2.0. He really is a vulnerable character. That's what makes him so interesting to me. The first time we see him he's wearing armor and helmet and it's very reminiscent of vader. And he just kills that old man.. And we think yep we have vader 2.0 here
But then we find out after Kylo Ren takes off the mask that it's just a boy. And not even some badly injured boy with scars or anything.. No just a boy who even has tears in his eyes if you look properly. Because he tells himself he's a lot better than he actually is. That makes it complex. He is actually the opposite of anakin. Anakin Skywalker has constantly felt the pull from the dark side. Kylo is the opposite. He is on the dark side (no sith that's another thing) and feels this pull to the light side. And he just doesn't want to give in to that. And that's exactly why he murdered his father in tears. Just to swear allegiance to the dark side.. To prove to yourself that he can be that vader successor.. Which he just isn't. And it's played so cleverly.. like they knew people would insult him as vader 2.0.. which is exactly his character arc. Kylo Ren evolves in every single film.. From the guy who just wants to imitate Vader.. To the guy who kills his own.. You know.. All the way to Ben Solo. As someone who writes one or the other character himself this is so well done and although I think Disney has pretty much busted Star Wars with the overabundance of content and the split between legends and canon.. Because legends will just keep getting better because it's just the original.. Kylo Ren is a tremendously good character.

23:35: Well, the very first Jedi had to figure this stuff out on their own, right?
Between "The Empire Strikes Back" and the Prequels, the implication is that it doesn't take years of study to learn to use the Force. The reason the Prequel Jedi only trained infants is because they needed to essentially raise them in the Jedi Way to keep them from going to the Dark Side (and even then, it didn't always work). Their great failure with Anakin was due to them having become so ideologically inbred that they just had no idea how to cope with Anakin's needs, since he didn't think like them. Personally, the hypothesis I liked best for Rey's skills with the Force is that she's just really, really naturally gifted with one specific Force technique: the ability to defend yourself from other Force powers, and potentially turn those powers back on the person using them. She does it against Kylo Ren with the mind probe, and that showed her how the Force is used to manipulate minds, so she could give the old Jedi Mind Trick a try. Every Force Power she uses is one that has first been used on her, more or less. Mind Probe to Mind Trick, hurled against a tree to calling a lightsaber to her, being attacked with a lightsaber to attacking with a lightsaber (and the Force empowers a Jedi's swordsmanship, make no mistake). I liked that explanation. That's not what they went with, but. . .
Also, really watch "A New Hope". Aside from the Force Choke and Luke's shot against the Death Star, both of which have had other explanations in other expanded Star Wars lore, nowhere in the movie is telekinesis presented as a thing the Force lets you do. We certainly never see Obi-Wan teaching it to Luke. Then, in "Empire Strikes Back," Luke, with some effort, can summon his lightsaber to his hand. Luke learned a brand new Force Power we were given no reason to believe existed prior to that point offscreen between movies, and no one cared. Rey, with some fumbling, figures out the very second Force Power we were ever exposed to onscreen, "AND EVERYONE LOSES THEIR MINDS!"
29:54: "What has he been missing?" A lot, actually. Yeah, he's powerful and has some skills, but really watch his fights against Finn and Rey. He's honestly not even as good as Luke was when he faced Vader in "Empire." People assume that Kylo Ren is some highly trained, peak-of-his-powers Sith Lord like Dooku, or Vader during the Mustafar duel. He's NOT. He's partially trained, and explicitly NOT a Sith. That's actually the complaint that bothers me the most, because it's just pure nonsense. Kylo Ren isn't an endgame boss mob, he's not the extremely powerful villain the heroes will have to work together and gain skill and power to defeat. He's at their level, a comparative noob. I actually thought he was a really interesting opportunity for a villain, one who would gain in skill and power as the heroes do, always being roughly on par with them. Again, that's not the way things ultimately went, sadly.

Not really. Many of the problems in the subsequent movies (and TV series) were set up right here from the start, IMO, so I don't know why this one still tends to get a free pass 🤷‍♂ (and it goes beyond the fact that the plot is mostly just a rehash of ANH's and all the shallow, pandering nostalgia-baiting).

    • @ComeOnIsSuchAJoy

@@Jumpman67 The problem with the prequels was strictly execution, IMO. The story was there. I'll die on the hill that it would've been nearly on par with the OT with a more deft screenwriter and a more actor-friendly co-director working with Lucas (which he tried to get, but all those he asked told him he should just make the movies himself).
I'm still not convinced Lucas' true ST story has been officially released, since I've heard conflicting versions, but, again, I'll die on the hill that it ultimately would've been much more imaginative and compelling than the shit we got. This trilogy was doomed the moment they made the decision to basically undo and then re-do nearly everything from the OT... and there were so many other things on which they totally missed the boat: the utter lack of exposition between Eps. If the PT was a shack built on solid ground, this trilogy was a fancy house built on quicksand. You can at least tear down the shack and rebuild something better in its place without any problems, whereas, no matter how many times you try to rebuild on that quicksand, it's always going to sink again at some point.

At first, I enjoyed The Force Awakens, but I don’t rewatch it anymore. Ultimately it was a fan service movie, making frequent callbacks to the original trilogy. It gave you a promise of new things to come, but it was an empty promise.
George Lucas didn’t direct every Star Wars movie up until then, but this sequel trilogy made it absolutely clear he was the glue that held the franchise together and gave it direction while he still owned the Lucasfilm franchise.
The same could not be said for JJ Abrams, who really just wanted an opportunity to go fanboy on a Star Wars movie and dip out right after. Even worse, you find as this trilogy progresses, the main plot arcs are entirely derived from the original trilogy, too. No original plot ideas, only inversions and set dressing.
Even Rey’s character suffered from poor storytelling. She was powerful only because the story needed her to be powerful, hence manifesting abilities in the force that neither Luke, Yoda, or Anakin could have done without training. And Anakin was literally conceived by the force. I’ll accept up to a point that she could intuit some things, providing the movie had actually supported it with scenes early on showing Rey using the force as a scavenger before leaving Jakkhu. But it did no such thing. It’s a key detail or Easter egg that a more carefully and thought out script would have included.
Too many glossed over details they’re hoping you won’t notice or pay attention to amidst all the action and special effects.

Hi Addie!🙂HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!🦃You are my FIRST reaction of the day. I was anxious to see your take on the newest Star Wars trilogy. I guess Harrison Ford asked George Lucas to kill off his character in the original trilogy, but Lucas thought that was too dark to kill off one of the main heroes. Probably his return was conditional that he get killed of this time (I guess). One of the top complaints about this film is that Rey seems to know how to do everything really well, including the force. Considering Harrison Ford wanted to leave Han Solo behind after A New Hope, begged George to kill him off in Empire Strikes Back only to be talked into the love triangle story George had in mind for him and Leia. He really did not want to come back for another trilogy so while it is tragic from the characters point of view it was the only way Harrison was coming back. As for the trilogy it suffered dearly from having its show runner replaced as J J Abrams had a three story arch but was fired for the second one, only to be recalled to Save the franchise with the third.
