Sorry this is so long, but I'd like to share how this song made me feel and why it's so special to me.
As a Christian, this song reminded me of life before Jesus changed my heart.
I thought that I could somehow be a good enough person to earn God's love. I'd promise myself I'd stop doing certain things I knew were wrong, but time and time again I would fail.
While I don't believe that Yoh Kamiyama was trying to push a particularly religious message, I felt my futile struggle with my sinful nature in his lyrics and I don't want to just post a song so bleak and hopeless without talking about the other, uplifting side of that: salvation and a new heart through Jesus, who died a death that I deserve on the cross so that I could be made righteous through Him, rather than through my own works. I believe that because God first loved me, He paid my debt on the cross and has called me His son! I owe Him my life for saving me from His holy wrath in Hell that I deserve.
Romans 5:6-8 says,"For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person-though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die- but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
This makes YELLOW such a touching song that encourages me by reminding me of the dark place God pulled me out of.
I'm so happy and grateful that He changed my heart, convicted me of my sins, and saved me through His grace. Even though my flesh is weak and I still sin, I am encouraged to get up and try again because God loves me!
He forgave and saved me on the Cross.
Again, haha, sorry for the lengthy wall of text here, but I really wanted to share this! I'm glad that I could use this time to give my thanks to the Lord for what He has done and continues to do for me, and I am glad that I can share this part of me with you who is reading this :)

I love comparing translations. I noticed that while Breadbox/David Tooth’s translation focuses on the relationship between the character and whoever ‘we’ refers to, yours focuses on that guilt and denial of ‘surely with my own strength, I can break out of this loop’
And I love that bit of nuance that yours holds, especially paired with the description and those certain lines like “his flesh was weak and curiosity’s deadly” are tied to it. It reminds me of my own journey with God, but also fits perfectly with this side your lyrics show.

I'm so thankful to have a community that is so open with me and each other. There's a lot of hate in the world, especially over beliefs and opinions, so having a community as loving as this one is such a blessing. As nervous as I always am to write about how much the Lord has done for me, I can never hold in my joy and the LEAST I can do for Him is spread His wonderful name and encourage others in Him! It's hard, especially when our own flesh rages against God and Godliness, but the love of the Father is always worth giving our shame and fear to- one of His titles are "The Wonderful Counselor", and whenever I give my fears and hurt to Him instead of holding onto it on my own, He always comforts me and grows my faith in unexpected ways. God is good, and all things work together for His glory even when we can't understand it all. He created the stars and has been so patient with us who constantly turn from Him. I have to be reminded to trust Him with tomorrow, since He knows what tomorrow will be and His will is perfect and good, unlike me 💙
Yummcake, remember that our salvation does not come from our works (Galatians 2:16), but by the faith that has been given to us as a gift from God (Romans 3:10-12, 2 Timothy 1:9, Titus 3:5. Romans 9:16, Ephesians 2:8-9, John 6:44, John 6:37, Romans 8:29-32).
It cannot be lost, otherwise it wouldn't be grace (John 6:37, Romans 11:6)- He bought our lives on the Cross and Has called us to walk in His ways. We will fail time and time again, but let that remind you of His mercy and the power of His grace which has made us His children in love and peace ^^ Don't feel that messing up can separate you from the love of your Father, God's love is unconditional and like a good Father who wants what's best for His children, He will correct us for the better when we get off course- Hebrews 12:6-11.
This was a whole lot more than I had meant to type, hahaha, but I really wanted to encourage you, my friend, and remind you that you're not alone and that you are loved by God and by all of the memebers of your Family in Christ! Although I’m not Christian, I still respect any feelings of hopeful and helplessness from this song. I discovered this song during a dark, chaotic time when I was back in Middle School. When I first heard this song, it was absolutely magic to me. I would watch the video at least 5 times a day, every day, not only to figure out what it meant, but to feel the feelings it gave me. That was 3 years ago. This cover captured the same magic I felt when I heard this song for the first time.

God, your covers and translations are absolutely immaculate. I love how your covers always aim to enhance the message of the original song, making it intelligible and compelling instead of using a direct translation like so many other cover artists will do. It allows for a much deeper connection to the lyrics that you just dont get from anyone else. This version of the song perfectly captures the feeling of being imprisoned by sin and that constant struggle to attempt to fix yourself on your own and inevitably failing. It's the same sort of theme that makes me love your cover of "How to Eat Life", granted that one is more a calling to turn from sin before it consumes you, while "Yellow" depicts the struggle of acting on that calling and the temptation to return to your old ways.
You're doing an amazing job capturing the emotions and feeling you mentioned in the description, keep up the great work!

I am not the least bit religious, but I can definitely empathize with feeling burdened by mistakes and behaviours I want to change. I'm glad that many people in the comments, and you yourself, were able to find a way out of that, or are at least working on it.

I don't know, mabye it's the little giggles at the end, the way you edit your voice to sound both robotic and human at the same time, or your voice itself! this song mostly just seems to be about personal struggle towards growth as a person because right now i'm dealing with breaking addictions and god this hits it on the nail and every interpretation in the comments seems like it hits the head on them too. a trauma or obstacle represented by yellow, the false solution of the devil where the yellow constantly cracks and seeps through, and just a regular person who wants to be better.
what sucks for me right now is I can't even tell what the yellow for me is. i've tried talking but i must have shut it out from my mind completely, so for the last couple of years i listened to that horned liar into just numbing my brain enough to where i can't feel hurt.

I’ve never commented before, but reading the description is heartwarming. I myself am not Christian, but I really appreciate how you open your arms to anyone who’s interested without forcing it on those who believe otherwise- I respect it immensely, because there’s too many people nowadays, especially online, that have the mentality of “you don’t believe the same things as me, so I’ll attack you until you agree”. It’s especially easy to associate religion with that kind of negativity, but it’s really nice to see someone who proves those connotations wrong. You genuinely seem like a really good person.
Not to mention your voice is stunning!! I remember first coming across your covers a few months ago and falling in love with it. Your covers are so impressive, and your original songs are some of my favorites. I always interpreted this song as a teenager who was LGBT and struggling with their feelings because they thought they were evil because of how society viewed their sexuality and that they wished they could go back to before when things were much simpler.
That being said I absolutely love your interpretation of it too and I very much loved your cover of the song!! I went to like it and then realized I'd already done that before hearing it when I was waiting for it to release xD

@@ceve seeing the image of the person crying at the end is so sad I just want to give him a hug and tell him that it's all going to be ok and he is enough as he is. Self love and acceptance are the first steps to get back to those happy days. I hope he and everyone else that resonates with this song are able to find love and acceptance and be happy again.
