Philosopher John Martin Fischer discusses death, immortality, and finding meaning in life, as well as how near-death experiences fit into the picture. Joining him in the conversation are Tod Goldberg, a professor of creative writing and director of the University of California, Riverside’s Palm Desert low-residency MFA program, and Maggie Downs, an alumna of the MFA program and the UC Riverside Palm Desert Center’s director of marketing and outreach.
Fischer is a distinguished professor of philosophy at UC Riverside and director of the Immortality Project, a $5.2 million research initiative established in 2012 to advance our understanding of immortality and its relevance to how we live in the present. Also an expert in near-death experiences, Fischer is the author of the 2019 book “Death, Immortality, and Meaning in Life" and a co-author of the 2016 book "Near-Death Experiences: Understanding Visions of the Afterlife," both published by Oxford University Press.

I would only want to live forever if my 16 year old son could live forever with me . He is now forever 16 and I keep getting older and it’s too hard to be on earth without him but I choose to stay until it’s my time .

Loosing one of my boys ( i have 2boys). I truly pray that God will give you something, or give you a word so you can have a way of dealing with such a loss! Give Lorena the strength to continue on, & show her that it's love that is the most important thing of all; and when we give love to others, we get sooo much back in return! I know that you will be ok~ and I also kno by personal experience that if u are like me, I tend to " retreat" & not want to talk to others or involve myself in normal things I would do~but this was the worst thing to do_to be alone in my head. Where Satans lies can get in and when that happens it's not good. So I pray for spiritual healing for you, & that while you will still think of your son daily, you now can come to him happy to know in your heart that you WILL BE WITH HIM-AGAIN that's a promise from God himself! Debra, I know you mean well but there's no one who knows if there is an afterlife, let alone any of it's details if there is one.
He will be there when you get there. :) Babies and young people do grow there and become 30ish like all of us. There are spirit people there who 'parent' the babies that go over. Have you heard of Swedenborg? Theres a great channel 'off the left eye' that shares his work. God Bless you.

I feel sorry also that so many have intellect, but have little understanding about what life is all about. Overcome obstacles, hardships, pain and suffering and still be loving and good to others. Basically that's it.

I agree. And when we think about it, if we were to increase the love in our lives as well as extending that love to others, then the obstacles, hardships, pain and suffering would decrease. We would be living in euphoria. If all of us, one by one, would learn to love and forgive and be compassionate, then there would be less greed, less selfishness, less abuse and less corruption.
It's amazing to me that the answer is so simple, yet people all over the world still wonder what the meaning to life is.

I’m only 35 and very curious. Not suicidal, but curious and tired. But also scared for my kids. This is all really interesting. I’m scared of dying but not at all.

Omg I thought this was a discussion about NDE. This discussion was very hard to stick with. I think many of us are rising above the self. Not willing to manage fear and anxiety by turning inward. Many are reaching out to others. Look into the NDE movement. Our life is purpose is to live and help each other
This video was more commiserate than compassionate, misleadingly titled.
To they extent that they offer to be of some helpful/insightful utility for people, they pretend at being some universal utility, but in truth they are supporting a narrow view of humanity.
I would characterize them as irresponsible if I believed that they were more enlightened.

I love Becker's book Denial of Death and agree with most of it. I think you can fear death even if you believe it's total annihilation or non existence. The fear of death even if you believe is annihilation or non existence is because you have no control over when and where it will happen and it's random and inevitable and usually involves pain and suffering and also loss of being and separation from your loved ones.
It's not the pain and suffering that's the problem. It's that the materialistic view of 'death' (which is quite presumptive and incomplete, IMO) speaks to the *unbelievably* pessimistic conclusion that we live in a mechanistic universe w/ no meaning whatsoever.
There is no incentive for humanity to better itself in such a scenario. It's basically "get it while you can 'cause you could vanish for all eternity at any given moment."
I'm sorry, but it's a genuinely horrific viewpoint. When there are genuinely other avenues to pursue and scientifically explore, I have no idea why anyone would willing submit themselves to such a thing.
Tod and Maggie, I'd really encourage you to reach out to IANDS and ask to interview a near-death experience research such as Dr. Jan Holden, Dr. Marjorie Woollacott (neurologist) who will offer valuable, research-based information about near-death experiences, which includes verifiable NDE accounts (evidence that the person's consciousness was outside their physical body. Also, you may want to interview a few atheists who have had NDEs.

@@paulinecoburn181 That view is not what all the evidence supports. If your research is thorough, you will find that people do in fact come back from the dead and have a lot to say about it. Over all, the evidence has a very powerful message revealing precisely why we are here and what the meaning of life is. I thought that this conversation was about that and has this knowledge.
Being 73, I still remember emotions since I was 5 months. I know and remember how biology directed mind and body. It’s quite an experience becoming old and it’s turned me into a larger rebel than before. I think it has to do with a certain sense of power and social rige.

I have seen tons and tons of near death experiences as well as mediums who say people with dementia are actually aware and are the same person and want to be treated the same. They are half way into the spirit realm already and feel fine.
I have read that those with dementia are afraid of death, so they are holding back. I have always read that aluminum and mercury and all the chemicals we are exposed to affect every part of us. We are electrical energy fields that are affected by metals and wifi, etc.
What's unbelievable about life is that we are all alive here together in the same boat so to speak facing the same ultimate questions about Life and what it means. And we talk about it and wonder about it together with others in the same Reality we exist. We aren't completely alone in this world even though we experience all our lives as separate individuals and I can never experience exactly what others have experienced.

Do Sociology Research on The International Association of Near Death Studies. They are a liberal agenda cult who think they are creating a new world by running pro life members out of the organization that is supposed to be supporting NDErs. Begin by watching Robert Mays RUclips from the 2019 IANDS Conference, and Tricia Barker's "Education " RUclips on Interviews with NDErs ,40 minutes into her interview with Robert Schwartz. They promote the agenda by saying babies want to be aborted. Anyone who disagreed were given bad book reviews, uninvited to speak at Groups and Conference and harassed by IANDS board and its members.

I fear it because I want to breathe, I want see, and I want to be together with my deceased loved one's again. Near-Death Experiences-What Do They Not Mean?
The Bible’s answer
Many people who have come close to dying say that they recall being separated from their body or seeing a bright light or a place of great beauty. ‘Some consider the experience to be a privileged glimpse of another realm of existence,’ states the book Recollections of Death. Although the Bible doesn’t mention such near-death experiences, it does contain a fundamental truth that shows that they are not visions of the next life.
The dead are unconscious.
The Bible says that the dead “are conscious of nothing at all.” (Ecclesiastes 9:5) At death we pass, not into another plane of existence or thinking, but into nonexistence. The teaching that we have an immortal soul that survives after our body dies does not come from the Bible. (Ezekiel 18:4) Thus, any memories from a near-death experience cannot be glimpses of heaven, hell, or the afterlife.
What did Lazarus say about an afterlife?
The Bible’s account of Lazarus describes an actual death experience: He was resurrected by Jesus after being dead for four days. (John 11:38-44) If Lazarus had been enjoying some form of afterlife, it would have been cruel of Jesus to bring him back to life on earth. However, the Bible records no comments from Lazarus about the afterlife. Surely Lazarus would have spoken about his afterlife experience if he had had one. Significantly, Jesus described Lazarus’ death as being like sleep, indicating that while Lazarus was dead, he was conscious of nothing at all.-John 11:11-14.
Just an advise: ponder carefully about qoutes from the Bible: in Eccles. 9:5, it portrays only a personal opinion of the writer. See other verses for doctrines/teachings: ( the soul/spirit of the dead is aware of what is happening: l Samuel 28:11-20; Matt.17:1-3; John 11:25-26; Rev. 6:9-11) in Ezek. 18:4 you should read up to v. 9 to understand the context.

We are immortal. It’s not meant for us to live an earthly life for eternity. I think we are here to learn and then move on and progress. This earth is nothing compared to what’s out there for us to explore. Earth is a speck of dust.

Well that’s all on what perspective you have, I really can’t argue the fact that this can be hell, but it can certainly be heaven in some cases. The thing is, you have to look for the good in everything. If good is what you seek, good is what you will find. But if you look for what’s happening in this world as far as world problems, it can certainly affect your way of thinking in which can cause you to think in negative ways. Just my take on this subject. Based off my opinion only.

We are all on a spiritual path, some more advanced than others, despite "intellectual" chatting!!! I believe we come back. We have to make the best of our talents and circumstances this time around, learn, learn, learn. Many lives. Open up your eyes and see, know!!

You're speculating about everyone being on a spiritual path. You have no special knowledge of this. If it makes sense to you and gives you comfort that's great but you or anyone doesn't know if there is an afterlife in this life.

The two big questions in life are, who am I, and why am I here? There has been billions of words written on these questions. And the answers seem to be very complicated. But maybe they aren't. Why are we here? After dedicating a good portion of my life to those questions, I have come to the conclusion that the true purpose of life is to answer the first question, who am I? The simple answer to that question is, all is one, and I am that one. Now one may accept that on an intellectual level, but that really won't mean much to you. One must see into this with an intuitive understanding. This kind of insight brings the understanding of what the mystics call illumination. And what illumination brings is beyond my capacity to put into words. I'll say this though, it doesn't end pain, however it helps to keep it in perspective.
Now, one may ask where to look for this understanding? One finds it through introspection. Here's a safeguard to keep in mind that's very important. I will paraphrase the Buddha here. Don't believe anything, or what anyone tells you until you have thoroughly examined the teaching, and know in your heart that it's true. And then as best as one can, live up to it.

Living eternally is not a problem, Maggie. Just try and do otherwise! And from so many accounts, 30 is about the age your average posthumous graduate adopts as their appearance 'over there'. I must recommend "Great Minds Speak to You" as a source of inspiration and truth about life after death. I am so weary of humanity's dalliance in this regard. We are immortal. We are not physical. Body's do not indicate temporality. They only reveal that spirit can live however and wherever 'it' chooses.
We do not need to be afraid of death. The perceptions of modern NDEs show that death is not something to be feared. Father Seraphim argued that there is no reason to assume that these happy visions really show what the soul will experience, on a permanent basis, after the death of the body.
2. Judgment and hell are non-existent. Anecdotal evidence from the NDEs portrays the "being of light" as a non-critical entity who views one's actions, even bad deeds, with calmness and humor.

The Meaning of Life has a completely different interpretation than how it is perceived. From my perspective, we need to recognize that we are all Pavlovian creatures who have been programmed from the moment of conception and right up to this very moment. For us, there is no free choice. It is all based on our prior life experiences which determine our future choices. The only way to real freedom is to find a way to break the programming codes that we have been imbued with. Otherwise, we are blindfolded puppets that act according to our input. I would not want to live under those circumstances without first finding who I really am. I don’t want to live as a sock puppet. Fortunately I broke this code and have had a fantastic life.

To want to break that code, you must have had experienced pain. I agree that we are electrical energy fields being constantly created that are like perfect computers that can go anyway from there. I agree that time is simultaneous, so what we experience now affects the child. In an existence of images, to create a happy childhood is to create a happy life now.
I have a question about the area of the brain that scientists claim is what creates the NDE. Once that area is dead, so to speak, and the NDE happens, how can doctors prove that the NDE didn’t happen before that area of the brain died?
How can the know exactly when an NDE occurs?
An NDE can occur just before going unconscious, or just before that area of the brain dies that is thought to be the NDE created, or afterwards when in a Coma. How exactly do they know the exact timing of the NDE?
There are many classes that teach people how to leave their bodies on purpose to go flying through other dimensions. These are called OBEs. Out of Body Experiences. This is exactly like having a NDE. We are not physical. That is why NDEs and OBEs can happen. We are electrical energy fields. These are our souls. They are projecting us as THEIR images. We are ONE with our souls. What happens after will always be a mystery. The NDE of someone else may not necessarily be the same for others but it will always be an inspiration to improve.

@eme jota Amazing, I have a memory from when I was a baby as well. It’s more of a visionary and sensory memory. I used to cling to my mother and cry if anyone tried to hold me.
I recall watching my mother walk away from me on a bright day while I was being held by someone who smelled exactly like her . So I was confused. I recall feeling bounced and my chin hitting on this persons arm or shoulder.
My mother told me this was a memory of when she was passing me to her sister (my aunt) who watched me while mother ran errands.
My aunt smelled like my mother so I didn’t cry and felt safe.
We may find out we have all be short changed. All things will be revealed.
Religion vs spiritual - very different!!!!!
There are only two approached one can take as they seek God......one is by human reason and the other is by faith, or believeing what the Bible says. If you insist on the "human reasoning" route you will find out shortly that what the bible say does not make sense to the natural human brain. God only honors the faith route.

It is precisely one of the lessons we are to learn while we are here, which is to learn the very purpose of human reasoning, which is an integral part of consciousness. If we gather the evidence and conclude rationally from the evidence, then we will know that is a fact that we are conscious spiritual beings who live past this physical material existence. There is no true conflict between our reasoning faculties and faith. Reason does in fact support our faith, and our faith should support our reasoning faculties and it's nature. But, I think this only comes when you are fully integrated and know yourself and who you are.
Dr. Bruce Greyson, Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia, has dedicated his professional life to near-death experience research. I recommend that people interested in the subject of near-death experiences consider the findings of NDE researchers rather than a philosopher. Dr. Greyson's book "After: A Doctor Explores What Near-Death Experiences Reveal about Life and Beyond" will be out March 2nd. Can't wait to read it!
I also look forward to reading Greyson's book. I know that his work is interesting, and he has made significant contributions to the literature on NDEs. I however would not tell readers not to read material from various sources, including philosophers! Also, I can assure you that NDEs do not tell us anything about the afterlife but they do have lessons for living and dying. Peace.
@@johnfischer8536 from my research the opposite is true. NDE's tell us an enormous amount of information about the afterlife. It appears that you have not read that many accounts. They also tell us what our purpose is here on earth.

The fact that most humans seek meaning in their lives regardless of how long they live is meaningful in itself. As far as we know we believe most if not all other species of animals don't have that same experience because of obvious differences in brain development.
"Who are the people who want to live forever?" The wealthy, silicone vallley techies, Russian plutocrats, the non-religious; Basically those that trust in riches. Truly nothing new under the sun. Lol, perhaps we should call it the 'Mr. Burns Syndrome'.
No matter how rich and/or powerful one is that desires to live forever, they will be outdated, irrelevant and unwanted. Simply, ask the Older generation in their 90's to get the real persepective!
This is a very strange conversation.
Believing in an afterlife while we are alive to me could be like Pascal's Wager. In my mind it doesn't matter if we are right or correct about there being an afterlife or not because in a sense what we believe about it doesn't matter because it doesn't change or effect what the reality of it actually is. So it's comforting to believe in an afterlife whether it's true or not and also there's no benefit in this case in being correct and if it's not true you still haven't lost anything. Our beliefs can't change the most fundamental aspects of Reality like death or birth. I obviously didn't choose to be born or exist and the same is true with death.
It seems that clinically death people have very short time window to communicate with living people on earth, not always they are able to communicate with anyone, but when they succeed, is it always around the time before they were buried.
and I know it from my own personal experience(I had contact with clinically dead person) and from all others that had theis paranormal experience around the globe, why is your take on this?

One last note. I'm nearly certain Socrates or Plato had a near-death experience which is the true meaning of the Myth of the Cave and is why the last book in The Republic ends with the Myth of Er (an NDE account).
The allegory of the cave is actually not an allegory at all. We are in the cave. And the myth of Er, well, this distinguished professor sure brings it to mind.

Conciousness wants to explore, create new worlds, create in unison with all kinds of Beings in every kind of dimension. To be limited would suffocate adventure.

This may be an after life from a previous life and that we existed before we came to this one. There is a lot of evidence from many NDE accounts that indicate this may be true. Many report that they have had many incarnations as revealed by their NDE. I regard these NDE accounts as powerful evidence that we are conscious spiritual beings temporarily inhabiting this body on a temporal plane. NDE accounts are a very powerful form of evidence in and of themselves, and is just as powerful as is the testimony of witnesses in a court of law and a jury trial.

I recently just had a Cardiac Arrest in January 2022. I had to be bought back twice that night, interesting thing about the Cardiac Arrest before it happened I knew my heart was healthy there is no way this is real. It was real. They revived me using the Defibrillator & chest compressions. The Doctors/medical team after all the tests my heart was healthy it confused them much and still today they don’t know why and nor do I know. I’ve been telling my family my husband since the NDE I’m not the same, my Tribal elders called it a Death Ceremony and Rebirth for a purpose Initiation in Spirit. I was suffering from excess catecholamines from age 12. By 23 my condition was getting very bad just 45 kg weight , pale. Intestinal bleeding severe headache and stomach ache sweating and fever. What I would say a severe hypertensive attack fever. I went to sleep in night. I was suddenly awake and rising up in flat position and I was confused that why was I rising up. As I floated up in a angle was near roof. I turned around and saw my own body in bed. There was so intense desire to go back in my body that I can't explain in words. I was instantly back in my body and I opened my eyes. For thereon I recovered for two months naturally befre I got medical help and few months later my condition was diagnosed. Though 50 now I survived several near death condition s later also and stay home with very restricted life with no physical stress. The near death and the out of body experience was due to cytokine storm.?

What you really want to aim for is retaining your consciousness and energy so you don't lose memory upon dying. A CONSCIOUS reincarnator.
That's not how this place works. Memory wipe comes with the deal to incarnate here. Sure, some of us have fragmented memories of our past lives in this realm but retaining them in any meaningful way seems near impossible unless you can tap into them at times or if one figurea something out here that the majority have not The game is rigged and the deck is stacked against our souls from birth. @@ForeverConsciousResearch I believe your right on, on what you said. But, in the dreams or every dream or nightmare that you or anyone may have had can bring back a past life memory. I’ve had a traumatizing youth through some of my nightmares I had when I was young. But, I remember them now that now I’m older. It’s strange but I just do. I’ve also had a couple of traumatic events during this lifetime as well in a form of a couple of near misses while working a job. It was almost like my life flashed before my eyes in a way. I don’t know what exactly a NDE is, but I guess my ordeal was a form of it. Now just within the last few months I’ve had a couple of dreams I had woke up to which caused me to have those flashes of my past life, sorta like flash cards or pictures of loved ones, and such before my eyes. I talked to a few people about this and the only answer I got was PTSD. But I know there’s something a little bit more to it than that. But, heck. Your guess is as good as mine.

You don't live forever you live now. To me forever implies the future. The past no longer exists the future is yet to exist and the present barely exists at all according to some scientists. If immortality were to incorporate harm reduction to where it's almost zero, I think people would want to go on living. It's about harm reduction physically mentally emotionally spiritually or energetically.
I would not wish to live forever. No way. I would be happy with oblivivion after this existence ceases. I would be curious about seeking the true meaning of LOVE however. That might take forever. Not romantic love based upoon hormones primarily - but as the foundation - the way and truth of LIFE itself. You might need very, very long interludes of 'sleep' however - but that's based upon time being linear. So many questions. To paraphrase someone - 'we read to know we are not alone.....'

I've had many times in life I just want annihilation after this existence. Notice I don't say 'life'. But I do believe we are evolving spiritual beings despite it all. Love is a VERY powerful force and I do believe in that and I am not talking Romeo and Juliet. We will know or not one day. But I choose to believe. Not because I want to live forever. This life has been hell. But 'abuse's' of ANY kind blind to Beauty and just look at a clear night sky or so many other things. The fallouts of chaos/darkness are the ingredients of new worlds.
Meaning of life, too easy, 'life is a quest for the future' and that is true of all life. Especially as life and time are the same force, time expresses life and life measures, creates, changes and records time.

Our souls go on and the achievements of this life will mean nothing other than relationships and acts of kindness. We are able to continue our interests and remember life experiences in the afterlife. This is coming from a very poor person, and Im disabled too. Some people love to 'mention' social injustice, but love to leave out anyone who is white, because they think we are still "ok" and very much entitled people if we are white. they only focus on the "minorities" which in fact are no longer minorities at all. especially in Ca. and they have no discernment of people and tend to overlook their behavior when it comes to housing etc. and so many, atleast half of the "low income minorities" make a lot of money. They send their money back to wherever they are from. As a person with many limitations, I have always wondered why I am left out of the equation especially when it comes to housing. I can barely find housing, yet live in the most liberal state in the US where they claim to be fair.. They also let the lowest of the low (in character/behavior) into the best neighborhoods. Im talking criminal minded who just want handouts. Theyve ruined cities doing this. keep in mind I was not watching the video to know all that they are talking about but the part that I came in on was 59:33 and Im so sick of hearing this garbage.
