- With our 25th Episode the Lab Band honors an American rock band best known for popularizing the Southern rock genre during the 1970s - Lynyrd Skynyrd. Formed in 1964 by a group of high school friends in Jacksonville Florida, and formally adopting the Lynyrd Skynyrd name in 1969, the band gained worldwide recognition for its live performances and signature songs Sweet Home Alabama and Free Bird early in their career. Behind the leadership of vocalist/lyricist Ronnie Van Zant the unique piano playing of Billy Powell and the ever changing guitar cast that included the likes of Allen Collins, Gary Rossington, Ed King and Steve Gaines, Skynyrd sold over 28 million records and are members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. We are fortunate to have our new friend, Nashville recording and touring guitarist Roger Coleman and a long time friend, Jeff Tipton join us for the first time on this episode. We hope you enjoy our 5 song tribute to these southern rock legends and as they say - Turn It Up!

Ok, that was one of the best ones yet. The keyboards, vocals, guitar work, percussion and the brass, you guys freakin nailed it. I’ve seen Skynyrd live 10 times and these are the best covers I have ever heard. All the fallen members of Skynyrd surely are giving u guys a standing ovation every time this is played. Skynyrd Nation lives on in LLB! Whooohooo!

I so enjoyed this! Everyone was having such a good time, including the keyboard player who said in an interview that this song was one that he almost didn't play because he had a hard time with it. That would have been a shame because he nailed it! What talent you all have!

Love the three guitar sounds that Skynard produced. LLB did an excellent song recreation here as good as can be done outside the original Ronnie Van Zandt led Lynyrd Skynard!

Dale, I have never heard anyone do Gary Rossington's solo in this song as well as you. You are absolutely spot-on without overplaying, like so many do.

True although a Strat, Les Paul and a Explorer aka Allen Collins would be the best but hey at least a Thunderbird bass is there.
@@bill2527 I played an Explorer Bass for a while... man what a beast that is. Huge, long reach for those frets. Forearms on fire with that thing.
@@tonedr In 1974 I bought a Gibson hollowbody, "Roy Clark Special" stage guitar from a kid in Charlotte, NC who didn't know what he had for a measly $150.
Aside from the '63 Les Paul I had it was the best guitar I ever owned and played. The finger action on it was perfect.
This makes me happy. Boogie’s the best!

@@tonedr you should think about doing Ghost Riders in the Sky from the Outlaws from The Rockpalast in Germany in 1981. They had a great 3 guitar attack, Huey, Billy Jones, and Freddie Salem

i have to say you guys fricken rock . this song sounds better than the original. not taking anything away from skynyrd. but the quality of the horns and that piano. wow.... that gibson and fender playing both at the same time wow what a sound. great job guys. totally be opening for me if i had a band....

no offence meant but that guy did not sound just like Billy Powell, this young fellow is good for sure but the solo in this was really choppy in my opinion.
@@papacapp6855 The kid is a hell of a player. Plays a lot of different genres. All I know is that I could certainly do no better. That's for sure! Seems a bit nit picky to me.
TheBent139 oh he is awesome, I agree but that solo was choppy and not “on the money”, I have never heard these guys so I have no dog in the hunt Hoss, I’m just giving my opinion just like you. To compare this fellow to Billy Powell is not fair, I’m sure BP could play other genres but he didn’t, (not that I ever heard) he bled, breathed and lived southern rock and honky Tonk. This is a very good rendition but I would not compare it to the original, again, just my outside opinion, I meant no disrespect to the pickers.

Wow! Life does not get much better than this! Twelve bar blues, straight 4 in the bar, in the key of A, with a great vocalist, 3 of the greatest guitars that were ever made (a Gibson Les Paul, a Gibson ES-335 with P90's, and a Fender (Custom?) Strat, along with a Gibson Thunderbird bass, and swishing Zildian hi-hats! What size are those hi-hats anyway? (They sure look a lot larger than Ringo's 14 inchers!) Wow! Life is good!

Dang... The was just a joy to watch. I was smiling the entire time. You guys are in such perfect sync. Austin is awesome as always. The brass section was fantastic. Rhythm fellas on bass and drums were on point, along with dynamic dueling guitars. I don't know who the vocalist is, but he was born to sing Skynyrd. He was amazing! Great job!
