They were so selfish, they called lord shiva when poison came out and forgot to call lord shiva, even for formality, when the nectar came out. But lord shiva is so humble and pure, he didn't even bothered.

@@moonoflife8211 True, lord shiva don't need nectar. But it would have been a noble attitude to first offer the nectar to Lord Shiva and then accept the remenant. It was like offering lamp to Sun God out of Love.
They were not selfish. Lord Mahakaal was the only one capable of taking the Halaahal. They prayed to him for mercy. And when nectar came they did not need to call him as he was already immortal , the source of all . He did not need nectar .

It is said that all the poisonous reptiles and insects like snakes, scorpions etc drank the poison in order to help lord shiv...even though it wasn't enough, but lord shiv, touched by the act of selflessness of these tiny beings, gave them the boon, especially to snakes that their worship will be regarded as lord shiv's worship ... The nag puja( worship of snake gods and godesses ) is regarded as lord shiv's worship and given the same value as worshipping lord shiv himself.
This teaches us that no matter how small your part is ... you're still relevant and can definitely make a difference.

Before the nectar, the poison came. This signifies that for a prosperous life of nectar we must gulp down the poison first.
The consort of Lord Shiv is Goddess Shakti / Mahakali ( source energy form ) who took birth as Goddess Sati to marry Lord Shiv but then due to circumstances had to leave her body and then she was reborn as Goddess Parvati who is now Lord Shiva's wife . Here , stopping the poison is Goddess Parvati .
*@Aishwarya Mishra* No offense, Mata Parvati stopping the poison, is all made up story. It's not true at all, because Parvati mata was not even born during the time of churning of cosmic ocean. So if Shivji did not had the capacity to neutralize Halahal poison, he wouldn’t have drunk it in the first place. Shiva himself stopped the halahal poision from swallowing, otherwise the poision would have been destroyed forever if lord Shiva had swallowed to consume it.

Everyone wants the elixir( which symbolizes good ) for themselves and we tend to forget abt others . They also want the good . So if everyone wants the good someone has to sacrifice and accept the halahal-the poison (symbolizes the bad) which had the ability to kill life in entire universe.
He is the father of this universe,. The entire universe resides within him so if the poison reaches in , the universe would be destroyed so to prevent this from happening, Mata PARVATI who is PARASHAKTI (the Mother of the universe) uses her power to hold the poison in His throat. This way THEY saved the entire universe from dying.
The significance of Samuthra Mandhan is that , one has to acknowledge and rectify the poison(bad qualities) of the oneself to attain the elixir of life ( Self realization).

And about *_Parvati mata_* stopping the poison, it’s all made up, not true, because Parvati mata was not even born during the time of churning cosmic ocean. So if Shivji did not had the capacity to neutralize Halahal poison, he wouldn’t have drunk it in the first place; more like thyroid gland reacted. It reacts after digested of poison. Basic biology.

Mahadeva is also called bholenath means one who is ultimate form of compassion and love that's why even the asuras have deep respect and bhakthi forhim.
There is no restrictions in worshipping him. only pure bhakthi and love is enough, he showers us with whatever we want.

Mother Parvati took the form of maa Tara (the one who guides and protects), one of the 10 forms of mahakali and stopped the poison from spreading. As everything resides within Shiva himself it would have spreaded through out the cosmos wreaking havoc that's why mother did this otherwise Shiva can't die or be harmed in anyway in the first place.

Halahal/Kaalkuta(most poisonous) Vish, he got fainted for some time!! Seeing this all the Devas and Asuras were alarmed due to fear and went to adishakti Mata Parvati for help.
Mata Parvati taking the form of Devi Tara brought all the poison from his head down and stopped it in his Vishudhi Chakra(located at throat or Kantha).
Mahadeva came back to Consciousnesses after this!!
This is why he is also known as Neel-Khanth or one whose Kantha/throat is blue(due to concentration of poison there).

She was first born as Sati to marry & unite with Shiva ( the conciousness Or matter Or Space) but due to some problem she self immolated herself. Shiva was devasted without sati. Maa Adishakti again was born as Parvati. & in her this form she realised her power as Durga ( the warrior goddess) and Mahakali ( the fierce one). So Parvati/ durga/ sati/ Mahakali are all forms of Maa Adishakti
