Truth! Last year was our first time elk hunting and we quickly learned spot and stalk without calling worked better. I stalked within 80 on a 6 point bull but not in range for my bow. Couple weeks later we stalked within 20 of a herd and our daughter shot a nice 5x6. Dropped in his tracks, her first time hunting and loved it.
Them thar comments on hunting pressure being related to game going nocturnal or bedding in thicker cover were money. Is it hard to gauge what is too steep of a bedding and feeding area for mule deer, or does it depend on the craziness of the deer or elk. Such as, some hunters are not willing to go too steep on mountains or too high in tree stands. I guess vegetation in a steep area would be a sign of deer habitat worthiness.
Great info as always, good to hear people's perspectives on calling and why they do it a certain way. More things to put in the memory bank when you're out hunting. Thank you!
There is alot of things that can go wrong when your calling Elk! I truly believe in my 20 years of bow hunting elk on the Oregon coast to many people over call. Trust me peeps the elk know the difference you have to remember we're in their house....I have killed way more elk by just slipping in silent on them, rather then trying to get them to come to me.
I hunt some fairly thick shit. Have had to learn to track. Having a hard time this year. Just not focused. Elk will hang out around town a lot and you have to know when they are moving. Get your timing right and you'll have the whole herd lined up along a river. On the stalking speed, its true that you can only go so fast before they notice and run but that's because its a slow fast. If you go REALLY fast, ie running or biking speed - they tend to freeze in hopes you dont spot them (or something). Ive pretended to be biking. I also pretended to steal a bulls grass. Almost worked, on all fours chewing grass but i fake farted and the fckr bolted. 😂 Ive also run with a herd in hopes they would head to a legal spot. Didnt happen. The one i picked knew it and you could see its eye go WIDE the moment i did. Another year maybe. On the butt crawl, i almost patted a bull on the ass but another behind a bush on the side spotted me. Have pics somewhere of my hand reaching out. On the jets, i use trains. And wind..good tips for people. Shyte... wish we could sit down some time because I'm almost there but not quite. Have taken a few but its more luck still. I also have major patience issues. Lol
Looking forward to the elk videos! But I still want to see all the bear footage! Older dudes like Ryan and you???? You have no idea.....Wait until you are 65! LOL
Could you make a podcast or videos outlining your application process and what you look for when you apply for certain units when the time comes? Then once you find the unit you can use the info you learn from Marks course to pinpoint the exact areas. Love all the content.
Great podcast! Allot of useful information. You mentioned about fitness in the different levels that you and your cousins are at, it would be great to hear your workout programs and how you train for the upcoming hunts.
You need to talk to the Elk Nut, Paul Medel. Nobody has killed (with a bow) as many 5 and 6 point bulls (including many herd bulls) on heavily hunted OTC units as him (both him and his son have killed a 5 or 6 point bull each, for 30 plus years straight.) And nearly every single one was called in. You say calling doesn't really work, but that's because you don't understand the elk language. Once you do, finding elk is the hardest part. Calling them in is easy. Now if spot and stalk floats your boat, great. To each his own. But who doesn't want a bull coming in screaming and getting a shot at less than 40 yards (or whatever range you prefer, based on your setup location)......... Listen to some podcasts that he was a guest on, or better yet, buy his app for $10. It is an absolute gold mine of elk hunting information. At least learn how to nervous grunt (a bark). It will stop an elk on a dime in it's tracks when you do it (used best when stopping a bull in a shooting lane or window.) God bless. Nate
Well you certainly opened a can of worms with that one ,I have killed them both ways and each method has its place. Thanks for throwing that out there.
No unless it’s on private land where they know they are safe. They move a lot. Can be on one ridge in the evening and gone by morning. They can be on a different drainage completely. With that said they tend to hit the same places over and over. But it can be a month apart.
@@troywesterbur706 that’s kinda what I thought we he says he’s huntin them in the same spot for a week or longer. I’ve never hunted only whitetail. Thank you
@@quintenbullard2921 my grandfather used to say the secret is to be there when they are there. There is a lot of wisdom in that seemingly smart ass comment. So it really tells you that you have to know where to be and when. It also tells you that there is luck involved as well. I have been in the right place at the wrong time more than I care to admit.

There is probably Elk in Brent's beard. Good stuff!!
Good discussion.

Thanks for the info! Looking forward to the films
Brent is my celebrity crush

Great advice on the Wind stalk...\m/... I think I may be starting to Rut after this episode

Check out Randy Newberg he went through the process, I think for most states.👍
@@afidbhawkins3173 I have and he has amazing content but these guys hunt a little differently and would love to get their perspective as well

This is interesting. Makes ya think different tactics. I'd like to see Corey Jacobson hunt without bulging.
Excellent podcast! What treestand do you recommend when you are elk hunting? Thanks
I've been doing that for 25 years, and have been very successful.
Well you certainly opened a can of worms with that one ,I have killed them both ways and each method has its place. Thanks for throwing that out there.
Great stuff as usual 👊🏻
Howdy bros..
Not related to this video at all but today I was thinking.....I wanna see Brian and Ryan shoot a big Nilgai and pack it out. 😄
Where’s gritty bro man?
Not on this but in current podcasts?
Do elk tend to stay in one spot if they’re not bumped but some kinda predator?
