Torreys Peak and Grays Peak the Epic Way: Kelso Ridge Traverse

  • Torreys Peak and Grays Peak are two of the most popular 14ers in Colorado. Their proximity makes for an awesome way to hike two Colorado 14ers in a single day. But, while most hikers take the standard class 1 routes to each summit, if anyone is looking to add a little extra spice to the day, that's where the Kelso ridge traverse comes in! Kelso Ridge is an offshoot from the main trail that climbs directly up an epic ridgeline to the summit of Torreys Peak. And while the Kelso ridge is absolutely epic, it is not to be taken lightly! The route requires plenty of class 3 scrambling, some challenging route finding, and, to top it all off, requires hikers to traverse across a gnarly knife edge with harrowing drop offs on both sides in order to reach the summit. From the summit of Torreys Peak, the Kelso ridge route joins up with the main trail to give up vertical (!) and hike back up to the summit of Grays Peak before hiking back down into the valley and back to the parking lot. If you're not up for a spicy ridgeline, hiking Torreys and Grays Peak as a double 14er is enough fun in and of itself, but if you enjoy a little class 3 climbing, Kelso ridge has it all!

Ran into you guys that day. Short story, we found a car key up on Torreys. Picked it up and did Grays. Headed back to the trailhead and a guy we had chatted with earlier was asking if anyone had found car keys up at the mountain. When I pulled out his car keys he was in AWE. Lots of trail magic that day. Cheers!

Chris that is so awesome that you picked up that guy's keys and got them back to him! And here's some more trail magic for you. Right after we left we saw an exhausted looking guy walking down that steep road so we stopped to give him a ride -- and it was your guy! We had plenty of time to talk on the way back down that gnarly road to his car, and he told us the whole story about how you found his keys. Trail magic for sure! Such a pleasure to meet you! ❤️

We are so happy to hear that! You will not regret making the trip -- the climbs and hikes here are absolutely amazing, and many can be done year round like the winter hike up to sky pond we did last winter. You would love it! Glad you like our realistic style. We utterly refuse to use those insta360 fake lenses that make everything look way steeper than it is. Absolutely hate that stuff. Sometimes our cameras flatten it a bit too much, but they definitely never make it look fakely steep! ❤️

I repeat myself, what a pleasure to hear the music and the voice of ELISE, which gives another dimension to the difficulty of this high-flying climb. Yesss! We were reading about that one and debating if we should do it before we go - kinda a bummer about the Bross summit being not legal right now 🥲 going to monitor the snow sitch for the weekend nd hopefully do one more 14er before we leave!

@@LiveHardxLoveHard - Next 2 days look OK for weather. Quandary near Breckenridge, or Mt Elbert (the tallest 14er in CO), easy-peasy for you two, if you just want tag one.

@@mountainflyhigh Quandary with snow could be a lot of fun and really pretty -- great suggestion, and we might well do it!

At precisely 11:00 on your video, right in the center of the horizon, is another 14er that you'll want to add to your list - Mt of the Holy Cross. You probably also know that you can see Arapahoe Basin, Keystone and Breckenridge at that same time. (also my house on Lake Dillon) A-Basin and Keystone both open for skiing on Saturday, cause your legs aren't already tired from this climb ;-)

@@Summitspeedfly Good info, thank you! And you're reading our minds with the skiing. We've been waiting for Adam to early retire so we can learn ski mountaineering, and this is the year we're starting. Will prob spend a month or so in Tahoe around January to get some practice reps in. ❤

Kinda like Meeker not sure who does it and Longs across that monster notch.

That was some adventurous, risky climbing. Knowing you made it back allows me to comfortably watch it., otherwise, I'd be worried the whole time.
