NYC Tapwater to me is about woods returning from his tour after missing home and still feeling out of place, because of the slow creeping gentrification in his neighbourhood. That ties in so well with the story at the beginning with him attending a dinner party at a wealthy white neighbour's and turning into a bit of a monster figure. The thematic thorough-lines really take this album to another level.

Great project and i’m very happy the two did something together again. They just have a perfect chemistry between each other that only comes around once in a blue moon, like Doom and Madlib

Awesome review Anthony. thank you for always reviewing Billy woods, because when it comes to underground hip hop he's only had like one miss in the last 5 years. Which was church but I even still liked half of that album. So as you can probably tell from reading I am a fan, and with that being said this album is just what I needed. Kenny Segal was the perfect producer for him to hook up with they fit each other like a glove. Plus pull the best out of each other in my opinion. Because good lord the beats on this thing nasty, the bars on this thing super nasty. Plus imo every feature did there thing and not one of them missed. All around awesome album.

Highly disagree with you saying it's an improvement over Hiding Places. That album's untouchable with masterpieces like SpongeBob, Spider Hole, A Day in a Week in a Year etc. But of course, Billy is super consistent as ever and this album is just another great addition to his incredible run. And I can't believe you didn't like Soft Landing, that one's just like a classic Billy song to me.

yo i think that crocodile tears bar is also in reference to the track of the same name off of "history will absolve me". (fucking incredible album btw) the album that was supposed to be his final but ended up jumpstarting the leg of his career were all familiar with now. it came out in 2012 roughly ten years from when he probably was recording the verses for this project.

I've been listening to Maps repeatedly since it was released and it's crazy how some of the lyrics stick in my mind along with their unique flow. They don't necessarily rhyme but they do border on poetic in how billy strings them together:
    "Colorful packaging, pack 'em in
    Fly like gold on Africans
    Cover my tracks with backronyms
If the track slaps, in the back, you can almost hear the black cackling"
    and also
"God bless this sweet home, my beloved heart
124 bluestone crouched on thin haunch
While I get dome from the living
Conch fritters crispin' in the kitchen
    Grew gaunt in prison
My own warden, celly, and superintendent
    Flaunt flagrant disassociation
    Dissonant cadence
Free political dissidents from they cages
    But leave 'em open
We got lists of names, pages and pages
Wouldn't want to waste the space the previous regime gave us
This message is to inform you your service will be suspended
    For non-payment
    Midnight ravens
Head in the loud clouds, both feet on the fuckin' pavement"

I did listen to the album and i think that it's pretty good, so it would be cool for me to hear your opinion on it. I also think that some songs sound like the songs on the self-titled debute Weezer album, which is pretty cool.
