  • @KermitTheArchitect

    Can someone with knowledge explain how the laser is removing rust but not overheating the metal underneath, or razing it atleast a bit?

    • @VedTraed
      @VedTraed 7 лет назад +19

      Different materials absorb light of different wavelengths, while simply reflecting and scattering others. For example, an object that appears blue is simply reflecting blue wavelengths, while absorbing other (visible) wavelengths. Objects that appear white *reflect all* visible incoming light, while objects that appear black *absorb all* visible incoming light. This is why, for example, black shirts get a lot warmer when in direct sunlight, as apposed to white shirts.
      This laser has been tuned to a specific wavelength where oxides (such as rust) absorb the light, heating them up so violently that they evaporate. Metals, paper, human skin, and so on, simply reflect the light while not taking any damage.

Light is fairly good at retaining it's energy thjrough air so I'd assume that if you accidentally have the beam go off the surface it could cause major damage, like a sandblaster. I've never seen it happen in any of these videos so I could definitely be wrong. Input?
