Designing an architect's own home and office space, Jolson architecture and interior design studio combines two distinct spaces that remain inherently separate. With a fascination of blurring lines between architecture, interior design and landscape design, Sunrise House becomes an exploration of how each discipline crafts a sense of space within.
Sitting on the edge of an industrial commercial zone, Sunrise House by Jolson architecture and interior design studio was once a 1950s sweet factory before becoming an architect’s own home. Greenery covers the building’s façade, offering a dynamic sense of style not often seen within Melbourne’s cityscape. Yet inside, the connection from inside to out is made through an open floor plan that allows for the family to easily transition between living areas.
From the entrance, the office and ground level of the house honours the original build by keeping the concrete, paring it back to expose the aggregate. Although, in spaces where new concrete was poured, Jolson celebrates the new markings with memories of his own family, establishing the structure as an architect’s own home as well as a workplace.
Retaining as much of the honesty and texture of the original building was key to bringing forth vibrancy. The main design idea in the open living space was to insert three walls. Black joinery adorns one wall containing a concealed kitchen, another a large artwork that celebrates the history of the building and a third wall containing a luxurious fireplace.
Through optimising the entirety of the volume within, Sunshine House becomes more than an architect’s own home, it becomes an art form. Jolson balances life, texture and colour - further complementing the minimal design aspects of an architect’s own home.

Do you get to time share the painting?
Can I ask who the artist is that did the dog sculpture on the stairs? Love that piece.
This is how you do a more minimal palate while still having texture, depth and color. The art speaks to the family and the history of the building. Love this project.
Dont judge a book by its cover!
This home is very smart! Combine art with interior, architecture, all really went well.
The design itself increases the value of the home! Thanks Local Project
Really beautiful spaces. Love that we can really see how the homeowners are reflected in the interiors and exteriors. It’s not bland, boring nor anonymous.
There are so many aspects that I love about this home that I don't know where to begin. I love the respect that is paid to the building's history by maintaining the original factory name as well as utilizing the newspaper photo as a cover for a sliding door. Which brings me to the next idea . .. this concept of concealing and then revealing. Large doors that slide to reveal shelves or portions of the kitchen it's just beautiful. Also the fusion between indoor and outdoor areas is wonderful. The garden is area is a peaceful place with the reflecting pool. The outdoor bath is a very nice touch. This is an incredible renovation with business office down below and a home above. It's a wonderful combination. Well done!
Once again! You had me at 3 seconds! Beautiful restoration and creative use of space. Chic but comfy. Love the artwork and the garden spaces. And, you didn't need to mention the unimaginable return on investment! LOL. He bought the space 17 years ago, when the neighborhood was probably 'sketchy' and now it's the happening place--just speaks volumes about his vision and creativity.
That garden....absolutely stunning. And I love the approach of a paired back interior to let the art shine. gorgeous home
I saw this home many years ago in a design magazine and I absolutely loved it!! I love so much that they kept the history, particularlythat art piece... a beautiful and inspiring build❤
The house is so wonderful and the details are also so wonderful. The props and walls combined with the painting, the vines, the round swimming pool, the black sofa and the wide window are all the best.
Phenomenal space! That industrial space with incredible windows transformed perfectly into a livable home with artwork and incredible landscaping and views too! Great use of artwork and hidden features too.
I so love the garden, garden rooms, water, reflections , art, thought, and retaining of history in this project. I would love it even more if there was native indigenous bird attracting flora diversity, and it became an alive ecosystem.
A lot of nice elements to the space but the dog was the real star of this clip. Who else thought that was the dog at the bottom of the staircase close to the piano?
You can learn how to become more creative, but you can only be born with artistry in your blood. This man is an artist. Every detail in this project is breathtaking..
Amazing as always
Stunning and very inspiring!
Beautiful work!
WOW every element in this house is just beautiful
My dream house has always been to renovate an old factory or industrial space!
Sheesh
Very nicely done.
Rare beauty ! Amazing work
That Arco floor lamp is stunning!
@olivia o. or probably you’re over analyzing every comment (which in my case was a mere observation) unnecessarily and trying to sound ‘sublime’.
I was obsessing over that lamp for while (planning to buy) and just got excited finding it in this video as I never saw it real life.
That’s all there is to it.🙂
@olivia o. Thanks. An original Arco would be imo
I want to live in such house in my weekend after long hectic weekdays..
Absolutely love The Sunrise House.
LOVE that pool and garden. Very special.

I'm so glad you kept the front factory facade and let the wild vines grow all over it - without that it wouldn't be the same...

Must be nice having all the money in the world to do what you want!
Expensive furniture, full equipped professional office, etc.
Good for you!
Fantastic
i do love your filming and the representation of the projects (the slow and peaceful movement) but the music is a little bit too loud, i want to understand the architects explaining their work
Love this space and floors, though I'm generally not one for concrete floors, the finish on this one was nice.
Lovely home. I cant grasp the garden area around the pool. Very high maintenance that would be!
amazing ❤
A dream!!
Que lindeza! Tudo de extremo bom gosto. 🕊💫🥰🌵☘
Impressive!!!

i love it!!!!
Nice.
amazing home❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
WOW beautiful my Dream
I'm moving in!
The house is Art ….Art is the House !!,
Beautiful house! Btw I often wonder why many western houses do not install mosquito(bugs) net on the windows?? I live on the 23rd floors but still have ones here in my apartment.
One of the few homes I’d like to live in.
Чистые линии, много естественного света. Хорошо!
Hermoso espacio
Thar was a very interesting house tour. Really like it. My favorite part was definitely the outdoors because I don't see round pool quiet often. I had to watch the video again because I keep getting distract by the cute Dog and also good the art choice is immaculate...
超漂亮
Anyone know the name of that red climbing vine plant on the wall?
Wow
1:33 - Having a home terrace that overlooks when employees come and go feels imperious to me.
Does anyone know the name or artist name for the paintings @2:54?!
Nice and basic with accent features.
Not going to lie, I wasn't listening to a word he said. I was too busy being engrossed in the design.
Wooww
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥👌👌👌
有錢真好
Sorry, I didn't get it. So you have to go through the office to get to the house?
i really like how you create your videos! Well done!.... there's just one thing..... I find it a bit pitty that every episode is quite short and i guess it's your concept. Unfortunately this concept doesn't allow to stay longer in the mood of a house and discover it more deeply.
👍
🌷☕
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
That was a very sexy home
If you are interested in architectural projects, you can watch the videos where I review the projects. ruclips.net/video/pHDrnQwxgZ8/видео.html
Would it be possible to bring the background music volume down. Would appreciate hearing the architect ?
7:11 Maybe it won't work in India.
The artwork looks quite dark to me as in gives me an uncomfortable feeling, making the home eerie 🤔.Sometjing not quite right about the artwork in that home. Please I am entitled to my views no nasty replies thanks
Well, other people might feel they are entitled to their views on yours 😁
I have tbh this project feels very dated
blah, blah ,blah. nothing new here but the absolute expected - wreaks of way too much money and privilege to achieve the easy and expected any modernist firm could churn out. Sorry but just nowhere near enough tough and original design to surprise and delight....the unexpected is where good design lies most often on a tight budget. Best feature was the remnant wall and planting...the undesigned and original features. Too much art crowding the other doesn't help either.... back to the drawing board.
