      Hi Mary, I'm in my 60s now , recently bought a Maton SRS808C Acoustic Guitar. I'm Australian so The Australian made Guitar seemed right. So glad I found your channel here. Like minded people connect here on RUclips learning from each other. I especially enjoy your conversations with other Music minded folk. Now it's time for me to learn how to play this guitar..I had someone asking a survey in preparation for youtube . How do we know these surveys are from youtube. .back to listening now

      weird:
      i seem to be the opposite of most ppl (in most categories).
      ex:
      i could easily produce BILLIONS of videos (every other musician and friend of mine says they can't keep up).....with NO EFFORT (ex: i'm mostly an improvising musician, on numerous instruments)......and yet RUclips put Shadowbans on ALL my channels and videos! (ARGH!)

    I think younger people may not realize how difficult it was to find information on just about anything before the internet. I (72 yrs.) had many interests as a child and youth and was always frustrated by the lack of information. RUclips is an incredible resource.

      Charles Huguley So true. My "google" in the early 70's was Encyclopedia Britannica & the public library.

    • @charleshuguley9903
      @charleshuguley9903 3 года назад +3

      @scott matthews Such anger! You must have been seriously harmed by your experience on the internet. My experience was that public libraries had little information available in the areas that interested me: magic, jazz, and filmmaking. I do not find that these areas (with the exception of magic, which was a childhood interest) are rife with the problems you describe. Perhaps if, say, politics were the area of research, I might agree with you. And I don't understand why reading an article or watching a video presentation on RUclips is stupid and lazy compared with going to the library, finding a book and reading it. Does the fact that a process is easier and more effective make its use "stupid and lazy"? I would think that, on the contrary, not choosing the more effective approach would be stupid.

    I love Rick’s ‘what makes this song great’ series. Breaking down how these amazing tracks are recorded and built up is just amazing. His studio looks amazing in this video. Almost like he’s superimposed into it!

    • @deivi1
      @deivi1 4 года назад +5

      It's a great series and it's honestly amazing even for songs like 'What's My Age Again?' by Blink-182. I'm sure they didn't go into nearly the detail when writing it lol, but it's still neat to see him break it down, especially with how he isolates the tracks.

      Yeah, through the time, the "production value" of his videos really got to the next level. I can really appreciate it and I know how much thought and work was put into it to look like that.

    • @davidkeller8084
      @davidkeller8084 3 года назад

      Yea as far as his really nice studio, nothing is ever out of place, maybe it is a green screened background and he has even commented that people think so, and he said "it's real".
      Maybe Mary should have asked that question.
      I would believe him if he walked to the back of the room, picked up one of those Marshalls and brought it to the camera. Just as in this video, HE REACHES OFF SCREEN TO GET HIS GIBSON, He didn't walk over and pull it out of the rack of guitars behind him. Peculiar.

    • @rollomaughfling380
      @rollomaughfling380 4 года назад +5

      Rick is a RUclipsr who went to a music school, paid attention in his theory classes and has *some* experience in bands/production. I'm glad he found an audience, but don't be dazzled about his *Tales Of The Industry Days* . I was actually living in the same city at the time he claims to have been "courted by labels, been through the whole wringer" etc. Not a *single* one of my old friends from the '90s scene has ever heard of him. He's a Music Fan who went to Industry School and worked with some suburban metal bands. These "Music RUclips Influencers" are in a feedback loop. You'd do well to not get drawn in.
      There are plenty of actual big, legendary producers out there with a ton of experience to learn from here on RUclips. The difference is, you have to find them, and they're generally not the ones making a video every week or so, and trying to hustle you to sign up and pay for some online courses because they worked with fucking "Stuck Mojo," lol.
      Never pay to play. And if you're gonna pay to learn, do yourself a favor and spend your money well.

    • @robertlester641
      @robertlester641 4 года назад +18

      He made a "WMTSG" video the other day and said, "This band had two studio bass players on this record and the credits aren't specific but you can tell this is XXX XXX playing because it's definitely a Music Man bass tuned down to B and XXX XXX started playing Music Mans in 19XX." My chin was on the floor. And Rollo, yeah whatever, dude LOL. If you watch when HE interviews someone like Peter Frampton or Eric Johnson, you see that he is very smart and very humble. When he is dissecting a guitar riff and he says, "Here, I'll TRY to play along so you can hear it" then he nails it every time. Don't be jellie, bro.

    Mary, Rick: thank you for this discussion. It's a fine line we parents walk to encourage musical study to our children. I was fortunate to be the youngest of five kids (who were all musical) so the importance of music was ingrained from a very young age. My own son (as an only child) didn't have the advantage of siblings to model...he had to get encouragement from me and his teachers at school. Ultimately, he embraced percussion, but the journey was multifaceted and not always promising. Perseverance helped. If there's one piece of advice I would suggest, it is to encourage a chordal instrument first (piano or guitar) as it's more difficult to appreciate music theory otherwise. Thanks again for your insights!

      It's a thing called "indulging yourself." Rick has earned the right to do whatever he likes - and you can usually trust him to do something cool. Rick and Mary are both musical gurus for millions of people; they both are music-lovers who have made music their life and by sharing that joy they spread the joy of music to others. Rick is like an older sensei visiting and hanging with a youner teacher; I suspect that he's thrilled. I think that they're stars of the new music business, because radio doesn't spread the joy of music anymore; it's basically just an advertising medium(and much of the music IS adverts) and mostly horrid crap that doesn't affect you in a positive way, like music does.
      These collaboration videos are long, but full of joy; see them all, if you can. Enjoy it with a beverage(or a color-tini) if you like. Fortune passes everywhere.

    Hi Mary, I know this is almost a year old but it was worth saying that your message of don't give up is important. I was told when I started that I was tone deaf, wouldn't be able to play anything..... (thanks mum) but I stayed with it. Not going to change the world, but as a lead in a band enjoying the musical journey it has been amazing. Your message of working through the "failures" sums up being a musician to me.

    Oh how I wish RUclips was around 40 years ago, it is probably the greatest source of information and education that has ever existed. I started out using it to find old videos of old bands that I loved back in the day, and I was constantly surprised about what gems existed. Then about 18 months ago I started my own photography channel, with mixed success, and have taken a lot more notice of all the other stuff out there. I came across Rick early on, and he has led me to so many others like Rhett, Tim Pierce, and now you. I've loved the way Rock interviews other people, no ego, just a deep love for the subjects he talks about, and I must say that you have the same talent for that, more power to you. You managed to ask Rick so many original questions, that led into some really wonderful stories and insights, how much preparation did you put into that?

    I remember watching Rick's channel when he only had a few thousand subscribers and I knew there was something special about it. Now he's approaching a million and a half! It's fun seeing him being interviewed, great job.

    I’m so glad I subbed to your channel Mary, if for this one Tuesday Talk alone. I’ve been watching, listening and learning from Rick for years now and only found your channel a couple of months ago. Love your music and videos . You were definitely the perfect person to interview this RUclips music legend. Folks like you and Rick are keeping the music alive and relevant in a time of chaotic change.

    Thanks for making the effort to properly record this! I find it the usual SKYPE interviews VERY irritating because the audio is usually terrible! :-)

    Hello Mary, I loved your banter with Rick, especially one of your comments about 'Living in the moment'. That is really good advice for everyone, but also for musicians that get fixated on their past being better. We grow, we learn, we listen, we do. Thank you again. 🎸👍😎

    Rick Beato , is a great professional in music, love his videos and I m' still watch them to learn something new. I 'm interesting in film scoring so he did a great job especially with modal scales and pentatonic scales . and the rest of film scoring secrets ... Great teacher. He knows very well music . 👏👏Education starts at home. Time Stamp: 9:34 I agree every school needs all students to learn the only world wide language! Music ! "Early music training". Just as important as physical education, at preschool level. "RUclips is not social media " but my "go to" as well, every day! 🙏🏻🙏🏻👍👍

    Its Sunday, house is cleaned and organized, groceries delivered with alcohol so I will sit back and watch my guiding lights on youtube.
    A lot of people look up to your content, keep it coming.
    Your insight, life experience, industry knowledge, musical application(we are like vampires on this).
    Your honesty made me feel humble and not alone. PS find it hard to watch TV when youtube content is so specific for one's needs.
    More power to RUclips and more information for us!

    Interestingly I subscribed to you and Rick in the space of a few weeks. Am blown away with all of your collective knowledge. I took up acoustic guitar so late in life although I listened to all the great bands in the 70's 80's and 90's. No idea of music theory and have to learn to play songs on the guitar with Tab, but both of you have inspired me to start practising again after years of doing nothing. Thanks for that!

    Around 21:00, you two begin the production dread discussion. For myself as a tiny channel creator, it was good to hear the honesty and that I'm not alone. Yours and Rick's videos seem so effortless which I know is practice and hard work (carryover from musical training). I thoroughly enjoyed the entire video, thank you from Colorado.
