    I saw Layne do this song with Second Coming at the Moore Theatre in 94 as well. Sweaty Nipples and the Supersonic Soul Pimps were there too. Such an awesome show! Looks like the same show honestly. I still remember after the set going out to the car and coming back and walking right by Layne. I also got to meet him a year earlier. I miss this guy's voice so much. He was such an inspiration to me.. Out of all the musician deaths in the past 20 years I still miss him the most. RIP Layne, your still missed daily!

    Thank you for this. :)
    Layne always sounded better live than studio version.
    Layne Staley's vocal range can run rings around any other grunge singer (including Chris Cornell) in my opinion. Layne could sing the phone book and never hit a wrong note. Even at the end of his life, with no teeth and a lisp, his voice, wit and humor were all still there. Layne's voice and vocal range was so powerful he did NOT need auto tune or pro-tools until he lost his teeth and had a lisp around 1998, and even then he still killed the vocals.
    Barrett Martin (who played with Layne in Mad Season) said that when he stood to the side of the stage, he could hear the sound of Layne vocal resonance come out of Layne's body LOUDER than it did coming out of the speakers, Layne's voice was that powerful.
    Layne's whole situation from his drug addiction, to how he died, to how he was found only weighing 86 pounds and the drug paraphernalia, etc is tragic and haunts me when I think about it (and I didn't even know the guy personally).

      Thanks for this. Layne just....had IT, as the Wilson sisters said, and they also attested to his ultra-resonant voice as if he was "lit from within." As I'm just a recent Layne convert, after reading Layne's and Jerry's AIC & Mad Season lyrics, I've literally cried _buckets_ over Layne's loss, the lost to the music world, the loss to his band and his family, how it affected Jerry, and yeah...never met the guy. The only other singer/artist I can compare Layne to is Mama Cass, Cass Elliott of the Mamas & Papas. She had SUCH a naturally powerful voice, that she constantly had to throttle herself back when singing or she would have completely overpowered all of them. Completely different style of music than Layne, of course, but she was just naturally gifted. Just like Layne.

      @@goudagirl6095 Jerry's mother and grandmother had died within 5 months of each other in 1987 and within the year, Jerry had lost his family, his house and everything he knew. When he met Layne, Jerry was coming out of a situation where his entire world had just blown up. Jerry saw Layne perform at the Tacoma Little Theater just as Jerry was about to blow town. The second Layne opened his mouth and sang Jerry immediately knew he wanted to be in a band with Layne. They met personally at a house party and Layne learned of Jerry's situation of no home, no family in the area (his parents divorced when he was young, his dad lives in Oklahoma and he has 2 siblings). Jerry had little money left. Layne (drunkenly) offered Jerry a place to live (moving in with Layne at the 50-room rehearsal hall called the Music Bank that Layne lived/worked in), Layne got Jerry a job there. Layne gave him food, clothes, money. Layne got Jerry the guitars and gear he needed. Jerry was looking to put a band together and Layne gave him the number to drummer Sean Kinney's girlfriend who happened to be Mike Starr's sister. Mike Starr was the original bass player before Mike Inez came in the middle of the Dirt tour. Starr's last show was Rock in Rio festival on January 22, 1993. The band told Inez to meet them in London in February 1993 for the rest of the tour and Inez has been with AIC ever since.
      Christmas 1987 was the first Christmas for Jerry since his mother and grandmother died, Layne invited Jerry to spend Christmas 87 with his stepdad, mom, and siblings.
      Layne encouraged Jerry to sing more, after all, they were Jerry's lyrics he should sing them. Vice-versa, Jerry encouraged Layne to play the guitar which is how you get Layne playing guitar on HATE TO FEEL and ANGRY CHAIR. Not to mention I DON'T KNOW ANYTHING on the Mad Season above album. Jerry encouraged him on the guitar and was proud that Layne grew as a guitarist. Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine taught Layne more chords than ANGRY CHAIR and HATE TO FEEL.
      The friendship between Jerry and Layne was unbreakable. Jerry NEVER once thought of replacing Layne as the singer while Layne was still alive. He always wanted Layne to sing whenever he had AIC do something. If there were ever cosmic soulmates ... Layne and Jerry would be it. (And by that I mean, they were Sympatico with each other.) The way they sang together was a perfect pitch where two voices make one. What you hear and see between Jerry and Layne was a genuine friendship. They looked after each other. When one had problems with a song, the other picked up the slack. They were a team.
      Jerry was doing a solo concert in Charlotte, NC when he heard that Layne was found two weeks after he died and Jerry was trying to get through the concert and crying. He did shows between the time he found out about Layne until Layne's funeral because if he had taken a break then, he didn't think he'd want to continue anything later after the mourning period.
      Alice In Chains was a band, but they were also a family. They had internal issues just like any family. When Layne died, it was like losing a loved one, a family member, you don't think of the fights you had with the person who died. You defend their memory. There is a reason Jerry wrote NO EXCUSES about Layne and the line "You, my friend, I will defend / And if we change, well, I'll love you anyway."
      "My grandmother and mother were such huge losses, but I got Layne, the guys, and I got this.” - Jerry Cantrell, Kerrang! (December 1, 2018)
      “Jerry really loved Layne [Staley]. They had a bond I haven't seen before,” Jerry’s former manager Bill Siddons, April 19, 2002 (the day Layne was found two weeks after he died).

      layne is great, fantastic and all but you need to broaden your horizons in terms of vocal range to see whats really out there because layne's range is actually pretty mid range, not too low or too high.

      @@oui2611 Yeah, Layne sounded great and he had a powerful voice but his range was not like a cornell or Plant. I can't believe I have never heard this before. I mean I have been a fan since 1990. I heard mitb on the radio, was blown away by the vocals and went out that day and bought facelift. Love Layne and love Alice.

      @@tamibrandt I have to strongly disagree with you that Layne and Jerry were great friends. Jerry was anything but Layne's friend. It really sickens me to say this because I really wanted to believe that too but all you have to do is listen to what Jerry said in an interview he did with Lars Ulrich's podcast after Layne's death and Jerry admits that he knew that Layne was going to die because of his addiction to using heroin and he chose to do absolutely nothing to help him at all. He said that nobody wanted to control what other members of the band did with their personal time so he just watched AIC come to an end which seemed to me to be more of his concern over losing that, than his best friend and bandmate Layne. I get not wanting to control what other bandmates do with their personal time but Jerry knew very well that heroin was going to kill Layne. This is a matter of life and death. This wasn't a stupid thing that Jerry didn't like that wouldn't have mattered. Layne basically saved Jerry's life giving him a roof over his head and a job. He even invited Jerry to spend Christmas with his family. I'm sure if it was Jerry who was addicted to heroin that Layne would have done everything humanly possible to help Jerry kick heroin even if he had to do it all by himself. That is what a real friend would do. Layne was a real friend to Jerry without a doubt. But Jerry was never Layne's friend. Layne was already in a band and was not looking to leave them. Jerry saw Layne's talent and tricked him into joining his band. So he basically stole Layne from his band for his own benefit. And where was Jerry when Layne needed him the most? Nowhere to be found because he decided to go off to do a solo record instead. He admits in an interview that he knew AIC was coming to an end because he knew that Layne was going to kill himself due to his addiction to heroin and then he said that there was nothing that he could have done because he didn't want to control anyone in the band. He said that in an interview. What the hell kind of a friend just lets his best friend who invited him into his home and clothed and fed him and gave him a job and left his own band for him which then gave Jerry the success and fame that he had always wanted, would let Layne kill himself because he didn't want to control anyone in the band? Jerry has the nerve to act like there was nothing he could have done for him. He didn't even try to help Layne. He just said fuck it and went to go work on a solo album instead which by the way would have not done anywhere near as good as it did if it were not for his success with AIC. And that album was not a major hit that he would have been able to continue as a solo artist or he would have just stayed a solo artist. He knew he needed AIC still which was why he got someone to replace Layne so that AIC would still be able to play concerts. We would have never heard about Jerry again if he hadn't revived AIC. He owes everything to Layne and he chooses to do nothing to help Layne at his biggest time of need. Just listen to Layne's lyrics. Christ he was begging for help from someone and nobody did jack shit to help Layne. Everyone who said they loved him and were close enough to him to help him just watched him wither away until he died. It makes me want to vomit. Jerry was not Layne's friend as much as his moneymaker. Jerry thought he was better than everyone else and that he didn't need anyone anymore so he just let the best person to have ever entered his life die a slow painful death and then had the nerve to make the worst excuse I have ever heard any human being give as to why he was not able to help his poor friend who was going to die unless someone stepped in to help him. I met Jerry through my old roommate who was one of his rehab counselors. Jerry was claiming that he had a bit of a cocaine problem and if he did, it wasn't that bad of a problem because he was playing little venues while he was in rehab and he quit it before he was through with it after only 2 weeks to open up for Metalica on their tour. He was healthy and fine. He didn't have a care in the world while his best friend was crying for someone to come save him. And Jerry wanted to just play ignorant and messed up to bad to help even himself as he was doing just that. He should not have been giving interviews because he admitted everything in that one interview alone and along with his actions just goes to prove that Jerry was the worst friend anyone could ever have had. And it wasn't just Jerry, it was everybody close to Layne who claimed to have loved him as well. Where were all those people in Laynes biggest time of need? He suffered for 7 years with heroin and nobody did squat to help. and the few that did try to help didn't do enough because they let him continue to use heroin until he died. Then they all cried for him and said there was nothing they could have done for him. Layne suffered for 7 years and they couldn't find someone in that 7 years to get Layne off of that drug? Layne weighed 86lbs when they found him alone and dead in his apartment holding a syringe in his dead hands. It took 2 weeks before they realized he was dead. So poor Layne didn't have any real friends anymore in his life. They just used him and then let him die. Layne's death is the saddest story I have ever heard in my life. and I could not let you comment about how great Jerry was with Layne. Layne might have been alive today had he not befriended Jerry. I think Laynes biggest regret in life was that he met Jerry because Jerry only used Layne. He was not a friend to Layne at all. Friends don't let their best friends kill themselves that way and then make shitty excuses as to why they did not help them all while pretending that they loved him. Fuck Jerry Cantrel. Layne was a beautiful person who deserved so much more than what he got from the people who claimed they loved him. why do the bad guys always stay alive and the good ones have to die first? There is a good reason why they say nice guys finish last. It's because of all the bad guys who screw over those nice guys. Layne was the nicest guy you could ever meet. To know him was to love him. RIP Layne. You are gone now but the music you created will live on forever which means you will live on too. They will never be able to take that from you.

    It breaks my heart that he didn't care enough about himself to take better care of himself. I mean 86 lbs at 6"1 . He totally wasted himself away. He was so damn fine to me!! I also can't imagine just letting him do that to himself . I mean, yeah I know he chose it but as a person that loved hun , I could see myself chaining him to the bed and force feeding him if need be just to save him . I know I wouldn't let him give up on himself like that!! I know I have a 27 year old son and I've been through drug use with him where he was skin and bones and I had to reach drastic measures to reach him .
    It's just really sad. He was so talented . But you know he didn't like being famous, said he felt like a piece of merchandise. Go figure! But anyways he is for sure missed by me!! I love you layne!

      Trauma is the precursor to using.
      Imagine being left by your father at 7yo (somewhere around there). At that age children internalize everything and turn an adult’s choice somehow into their fault. Growing up, he decided to become a Rock Star so he can find his father. Father comes around, says he left because he was a bad dude on drugs but has been clean for 6 years but didn’t make contact for those six years. Rejection again. Then father uses you for money, starts using H again and comes around daily to use … all while you are trying to get clean.
      In Lanagan’s book, “Sing Backwards and Weep,” Layne would berate his father for slightly nodding off on the couch and video him to show him how stupid he looked, when Layne himself nodded standing up… (Google Kensington and you can see how crazy this nod looks). He resented his father’s usage,- I would too. Just unpack this…
      I think his story, not of how he died, we all know this, but how his Trauma and parent’s mistakes changed the course of his life, is told in order to spread awareness of childhood traumas and how detrimental they are to the developing brain. JMO

And it wasn't made into a big deal. When I met Laymen at as party to debut their diet album I was shocked to see such little attention Layne was getting cuz I was blown away. Not really. Layne did help them get some exposure locally with this song but this song never went national. When Travis and Dudley joined the band is when they got signed to Capitol Records. Their song 'Soft' went to #9 natiionally and and the second single, "Vintage Eyes" ended up going to #12. The tune 'Unknown Rider' was also used on numerous extreme sports videos as well as on the sound track for the movie "The Sixth Sense" with Bruce Willis.

    I know ita nearly impossible to help a drug addict if they dont wanna help themselves. Having said that, its clear that Layne accepted his fate long b4 his actual death. I saw in a rolling stone article from either 96 or 98 where Layne says, "I know my time on earth is nearing its end" or some bullshit like that. And this was at least 4 yrs b4 his death. I don't see how his family and friends let this happen to him. I mean not that ita their fault...but I'd love to know the depths they went in order to try and dave Layne from himself. I also read somewhere that for his family and friends, it was not unusual for any of them to go weeks without having heard from him. When I hear that I think to myself what?? Why didn't they have him arrested or put into a psychiatric hospital for being a danger to himself? I know for a fact thata what my family would have done for me if I hadn't agreed to enter treatment voluntarily. If I were friends with Layne and he said something along the lines of "if you have me committed to a psych ward or put in treatment I'll never talk to you again," I would have said "ok Layne dont worry I value my friendship." The second I was away from him I would have got his family involved and refused.to take no for an answer and had him arrested and taken to the beat rehab I could find. Or put in a 5150 hold until they could find him a rehab. I would have gladly risked him never talking to me again rather than continue watching him kill himself while doing nothing. I dont know what they're situation was like I said, I'm sure they tried their best. But doing anything short of what I just said in order to try and save his life in my opinion wouldnt have been "doing their best" to save Layne's life. Or maybe all his friends had their own addictions and heavy personal shit going on I don't know. But especially when it comes to his immediate family, I'd love to know how hard they tried and how far they were willing to go in order to save him from himself. Theres no way If i was his father or mother or a sibling of his i coulda read his article in rolling stone and not have had the police put him in custody and taken to treatment. The trouble in all this is if he did go to treatment which I heard he did 13 times, as soon as he got out he would have all the money and resources he needed to get his drugs brought to him somehow. His family dismt have the luxury of saying "we wont help you financially if you use again" and he wouldn't have had to pass a drug test to get a job in order to make money. The only incentive he had to stop using was to stay alive. And with his depression being what it was, I doubt even the notion of staying alive motivated him to stop. I dont know, it's just a very fuckin sad situation altogether. I also cannot imagine having enough money and big time dealers where I never ran outta money, and they never ran outta drugs. Being able to use to that extent day after day after day had to bring about the worst fucking drug habit and unimaginablewithdrawals. I just think the world would be a much better place with him in it, and so much more quality music would have been released up to this point. Very sad.

      I have thought the same thing about what I may have done in the situation. It is super depressing to watch people destroy themselves, especially the physical aspect of it. Sometimes the addict just wants to be alone and suffer by themselves. Seems to be the case here.

    • @Ичкерия90х
      @Ичкерия90х 2 года назад +3

      Hi Keelan. I loved reading your comment. I thought about the same things. Yes, Layne did not want to talk to anyone and isolated himself during his final years, but that was not an excuse to leave him isolated. Layne was sick and lived all alone in his condo with access to lots of money for buying drugs. Drug addiction is a disease and Layne was not supposed to live all alone and he was not supposed to have access to his bank account because he was using the money to kill himself...

    • @jekku4688
      @jekku4688 2 года назад

      Others can only do so much. Until the person themselves reaches a point where THEY are sick and tired of the crap they're doing to themselves, it's next to impossible to make any real changes. And when it comes to heroin or other opiates, things become even more complex because of the psychological, mental and physical hold they can put on a person. Layne was a wonderful, talented person, but he was WEAK mentally, and immature emotionally. He chose to give up rather than fight for himself and for himself in the lives of others. He sings about getting back to the innocence of his youth (i.e. Rotten Apple), but his early leap into entertainment caused him to have arrested development in his mental and emotional growth. He wanted to play all the time, and do things his own way. Well...that works...for a time. But eventually you have to take a hard look at things and go "Nah. This ain't workin. Time to try something new." And make a positive change. Layne didn't/wouldn't/couldn't do that. I advise you to read Jerry Cantrell's lyrics to anything music he wrote post-Layne, whether it's AIC or his solo stuff. He was extremely angry, bitter, and full of rage at what Layne put them all through, especially him, because they were "two running as one" as singers and songwriters, not to mention Layne was Jerry's BFF. Layne, for all his wonderful qualities, was ultimately selfish, depriving not only himself of life, but also depriving 100s of thousands of people around the world from a life with Layne Staley in it, a nearly unforgiveable act.

      It was like 30 years ago that I knew these guys. I left Seattle & never stayed in touch with anyone and Layne died and...and ...☹️ I honestly just came across a t shirt a couple of days ago... They had this band that played kinda Seattle Top 40 Grunge covers in the early 90s. The band was called F.T.A. They joked it stood for "Failure to Appear." 😆 It was right before the Second Coming debut cd... It was Maxi, Johnny, & James on drums..I think that singer was named Eric, then as they transitioned into Second Coming, they had Travis Bracht on lead vocals + Layne Stayley, who was a friend & collaborator. The FTA shirt I just came across has this kinda ancient Greek looking art scene of a threesome. 😆 I think it was Johnny's (Yanni's) inspiration cuz he was Greek. 😉 I wish I could post a pic here, heehee. Anyway, good times. 90s Seattle grunge times. RIP Kurt Cobain. 🥲 I'll catch your show upstairs when I get there, man. ✌️😇 Gotta go find Jimi first, then we'll all be there. Clock's tickin'. Let's get this party started! 😉🗡️✝️🤺🏴‍☠️⚔️⚡🎸🎧🎹🎵🎤📿🤍

      @@gsfbffxpdhhdf7043 Wow. You couldn't be further from the truth when it comes to Layne. First of all, he was known for his generosity (i.e. giving away tickets to AIC concerts to kids who couldn't afford to buy them, one time he even brought a homeless guy to their hotel room and gave him food etc.) and he did support Demri by paying her hospital bills even though they weren't dating at that time. Demri was the one who chose to do what she did, not so much because Layne didn't help her out but because she didn't want to depend on anyone else. Anyway, I just felt I should say that since there is a lot of misleading stuff about Layne and I feel like he definitely deserves something better than the same bullshit he had to deal with while he was alive.

      @@gsfbffxpdhhdf7043 Um, Layne was a very generous person and friend. He gave free tickets or VIP service to fans, helped a homeless guy in NYC, and has been described as one of the nicest people around. I'm tired of Demri narrative also. She was an adult and he had no obligation to take care of her. He actually paid for her rehab visits, medical bills, a pacemaker, and let her crash at his place when they were broken up and he went on tour. She made choices due to her drug addiction, just like he did. But her stans always want to make her a dependent angel who was done wrong by mean Layne. Give me a break.
