AMA with our DM Neal - / rollplay_qa_week_27
RollPlay is a weekly Dungeons and Dragons 2.5E campaign with iNcontroL, LivinPink, Ryan Moore, and JP McDaniel with Dungeon Master Neal Erickson (SC2 Ratings).
All graphic work is from Daniel Weijden.
If you have any suggestions for show please let me know. I'd love to have fun with the production.
Greatest scene in Geoff's D&D Rollplay career. Miss your playing, Mr. Longborn, miss your playing.
What makes this most magical is their second solution immediately got the dragon's attention, and posed almost no danger to anyone.
If ryan rolled it his fall damage he would've only taken 20 damage
This was the best fucking thing that I ever witnessed. Thanks to all of you guys, I was fucking jumping on my chair while watching this :)
That moment when Neal's eyes light up says, "You can do what you want." smiles and tries to hide it quickly.
SPOILER!
That was beautiful. A spectacular sequence of drama, off the wall shenanigans, utter fails and miraculous rescue. Thank you for that to everybody involved.
bregor jumps off the sky, abi dies under him, dwarf's poppy eyes sparkle in the sun as vincent's horse moonwalks past him, dragon chillin counting clouds
"I put on the ring... and I go back 10 minutes."
haha gg, Geoff
I like that we're technically in an alternate timeline now, and somewhere/time out there Azril and Lisa are standing alone in the desert with a couple of dead elves and dealing with the fact that Vincent just vanished.
I haven't laughed so hard in years
Best moment in rollplay BY A GOOGLEPLEX of miles. The entire party deserves a hand for this.
bregor jumps trough a portal and in "bregor fashions" fails horribly,
abigail trying to be the heros, fails horribly.
vincent chooses to save his friends and give up the one most powerful item they have.
vincent earned my respect in that moment. :3
just one thing, doesn't the ring still have a wish, even though it was used to go back in time. wouldn't it still have a wish then?
Nicholas Epsilon If the ring is as lazy as its been told to be then yes it would have a wish. The ring would just send Vincent back in time so Vincent removed the past version of ring with a wish.
This week has been amazing non-stop. Can't wait to find out what happens next!
17:42 is the greatest summary of anything ever
Honestly I'm really happy that they used the ring like this. It resulted in a super-entertaining and tense situation and the balance of the game wasn't disturbed.
Vincent is going to have some serious mental scars by the time he becomes king. o.o
Best Episode yet! Thank you all. I laughed myself to tears.
Actually the first one was used by Kelborn to turn the tide of the battle against the Ogres, Banon's wish never happened since he didn't put the ring on his finger, but aside from that you are right.
YESSS THUS THE RAEKWON JOKES HAVE BEEN BORN!
I cannot think of anything funnier being said after what transpired.
how did ryan not notice before... they were in Reakwon for a bit.
This is just the best episode ever. Hands down.
The single most awesome moment in 27 weeks of epicness
"I go up to vincent and hug him"
"I hug her back"
Roll for hugs.
Oh god ... hands down the funniest thing I've seen so far. I've only been watching a few weeks but that was sooo good ...
This episode was the best thing I have ever seen. I was so shocked by what happened that I completely forgot about the ring.
I love how Bregor took it like a man with the plan his like "YEAH IM READY TO GO LETS DO THIS!"
Six ways of interpreting the wish and the outcome.
Time is rewinded and Vincent remembers and stops events from occuring. Wish is used or is not used?(paradox)
Time is rewinded and Vincent doesn't remember(Events repeat)
Vincent physically goes back in time Terminator style to stop what happened, Used ring goes back with him. (Paradox again) do two rings exist or 1 used or unused. We now have two Vincents existing in the same time.
just catching up to these episodes, cried tears @ the elves!
CONTINUED
He doesn't travel back in time like a normal time traveller would and cause a paradox or alternate timeline:
He rewinds time. The ring manipulates time (with magic) and causes it to work in the opposite direction, erasing time that has happened like it was a line created on paper. He rewinds, and the ring keeps his memory and keeps itself from gaining back the wish using magic.
this was one of the most amazing weeks ever because of this part
This has to be the best episode ever...
That was probably the most hilarious and touching moment in the series.
Thank you JP for being so nice to RUclips :)
insanely entertaining. im assuming anyone outside my office probably thought i was being tickled to death. cant wait to see what happens next.
I often play these while I'm going to sleep 'cause they don't need to be watched (usually) and I like to listen to things at night, some of the things I wake up to are hilarious.
Was listening to some the other day and I woke up to "you take 70 damage"
It's safe to say I was pretty damn surprised xD
The ring only had 3 wishes. The first one was to turn an elf back into a dragon, which restored her Memory. The second wish was to revive JP's father. The final wish was to go back 10 minutes. It has no charges left and is now a normal ring for the party.
*SPOILER CITY*
Possibly the best part, thus far. Wild is the imagination that would've pictured them using their wish to undo a minute of hilarious stupidity.
I like how the rolls were exactly on the spot, as if rigged. Exactly that 7, then another 1 from ol' Breg.
Would've kept the ring. Who knows? Maybe Neal intended it to be tricky and the ring actually did reverse itself along with everything else, back to when it still had a wish left! Most likely not... but if it did, they would've effectively found themselves a quickload. One infinitely better than any game's actual quicksave system.
Oh man, I saw in the comments for the past few videos something amazing was coming, and I was not disappointed.
... ohhh comon neal he whished he could go back 10 min ^^
no specifics, no word of him actualy doing it and no word of remebering the actions ^^
[SPOILER]: It's so nice Neil saved two Characters by that whish. "Going back 10 minutes" could've easily meant just literally walking backwards for 10 minutes or something like that.
You know, I like to imagine that both Bregor's bow and Abigael's ferret were totally unscathed.
So much respect for Vincent for using the wish to undo their deaths
There was the king's wish, the lass who thought she was a dragon, and now Vincent. All three have been used, even without Bannon
Vincent is the MAN! WOOO!
Vincent's memories were intact, leading me to believe vincent as he was after the tragedy was transported back 10 minutes, including the now spent ring of wishes.
4:00 bregor is like, this is what i was born to do!
Easily the Funniest Moment of Roll Play to date. Saw this live on Twitch.tv and I about died.
Good point, but there is a flaw. The ring will grant a wish using the least amount of magic/effort possible. So since Vincent wished he could go 10 minutes back in time and didn't specify how many times he could, the ring would probably only assume it was a one time deal. Now if Vincent said, "I wish to have to power to go back 10 minutes in time at will.," it would be more like what you said.
this is the best episode.
tank you. jp. four years later
Time is indeed a touchy subject. That seems to me why Neal simplified it here. To ease the confusion.
Fun fact: When something strikes a surface comprised of many tiny individual pieces of matter (such as a pit of sand) at high speeds said surface will behave as a single dense piece of matter on impact...
Glorious scene!
Fuck nice save Geoff.
The most badass thing I've ever seen
Vincent is awesome! Very in his character and honorable.
Thank GOD, JP's nice to youtube :D
omg i cant stand this wait!
this is the best episode ever..
He made the first ever d20 roll on RollPlay, rolled a 20. He was also the first one to roll a 1.
Ryan bought a real d20 and rolled it on his stream for the first time. He rolled a 1! And he rolled it a second time and rolled a 20! He also has both the most 1s and 20s on a d20 of all party members. I dont know what to say :D This is like the funniest thing ever.
I laughed so hard, and then cried when vincent said "i never want to see you guys died"
The DM chose to interpret time travel in that way. Vincent should have asked JP if the ring was on his finger or still in his pouch... but instead Vincent chose for the DM by saying that he took the ring off his finger and dropped the ring on the ground, clearly expressing that the ring had no wishes left. As a DM, giving the players a wish can be difficult to plan campaigns around since you can't predict how the players will use the wish.
It was said like a million times that the wish would be granted in the easiest way possible/ least amount of power required. And that would be why it was a one time thing.
True, i guess you could argue about that, because its somewhat vague but if you compare the wish with something like a current it would certainly be like you said, that it would "assume" that it is supposed to be a one time thing.
Still the wording tells differently but you get my point. :)
Holy Shit! It's raining rangers from the sky!! XD
In defense of Abigael though: when the "its raining people" moment in Morrowind happened to me the first time my first reflex was trying to catch that dude too
Why does he time travel back? To save Bregor and Abigail from doing something stupid that kills them. If he changes past events then his actions and his knowledge changes which doesn't lead to his time travel. Its called a grandfather paradox. Unless he's in a divergent alternate timeline meaning technically he didn't save his friends, killed his alternate self and trapped in a different timeline. Then you get the mess with the butterfly effect.
I'm so close to beiing up to date I can taste it! Then I can finally look at the wiki without fear of spoilers.
There are about four, really solidly stupid ideas in this episode spread across every character there and I absolutely love it!
You Sir, have just won this argument hands down. Just for this reference alone.
Haha...Finally the his 1s become useful!! The irony!! XD
I enjoyed this so much!! It's things like this is what makes Rollplay so worth it :)
By traveling back in time, he created a new time-line in which there is no other vincent.
This was absolutely Bregor's BEST 1 ever! I lost it when I saw the 70 damage done xD
That 1 was truly poetic.
Since Vincent has memory of what happened I would imagine the ring would also have that 'memory'. Don't matter much, they dropped it in a desert.
Awesomeness. Pure awesomeness.
If that was the case, the ring still having a wish, then Vincent shouldn't remember anything and the events would continuously loop forever. Both Vincent and the Ring traveled back and merged with pas Vincent and the past ring. The ring not being used would create a paradox, not the other way around.
Bregor lands on the dragon "Do you have a minute to talk about our Lord Jexal?"
Time loop indeed. Time travel can be a tricky thing. It all depends whether time is rewound or if he goes back in time and what knowledge he has. Its all fate vs free will.
*u* So hype ... and that dragon just like being so chill about the whole lightning thing, now I pray that they dont mess it up and they can befriend this dragon and become allys.
and for those bashing on Neal...he has to follow through as a non-bias DM. he did his job correctly....kudos to vincint for putting off his item to prove to his father, 100000 xp
Because "Go back 10 minutes" is a clear order. Maybe i'm not as good in English as a native speaker but i hink this was really clear. And even if it wasn't it woul be a real shame to sacrifice 2 beloved characters AND screw over an extremely important main questing object just for the sake of "why the fuck not"? It was a really heroic action of Vincent and who doesn't say that there is even some god who stepped up and said "Yeah... that's ok." I hope you get my point.
Here is something to mess things up. What repercussions occurs from time travelling Vincent has to this alternate timeline? He's an invasive traveler, like an invasive species brought from one ecosystem to another a invasive traveler from a different timeline could have a disastrous effect to the timeline.
That was quick thinking with the ring. Now I wonder if the ring would still have another wish, since he went back in time to before the wish happened.
BEST 2 CHARACTERS DEATHS EVER!!!...... just fall hundreds of feet and squish the other... even though Vincent stops them with the ring.
JP wasn't wearing the ring when he made the wish. The elf then said that the ring HAD to be worn to make a wish. As far as I can tell, it still has a wish left on it.
Ring of 3 wishes
1 used by the king to win his battle
1 used by the "former dragon lady" who wanted to return to her true form
and now 1 used by Vincent
Not in the case of an alternate timeline. Why would Vincent remember and nobody else did? Because he came from another timeline in which he used the ring, travelling back to the moment where the spell was cast, creating a branching moment. There is one timeline where your theory would be correct, while in the main timeline, Vincent changes things and forcing the timeline off its original course. Like in Dragon Ball Z where Trunks travels back in time, yet he returned to the original future.
"I'll catch you!" "CRUSH!"
I can't breathe.. I'm going to die....
To be fair, theres no hard evidence it only had three wishes, it was only what they was told. Theres still the possibility it could grant more if Neal felt like re-examining it's functionality.
Amazing.....just amazing
That 70 is the perfect balance of rolls for 20d6. 20x 3,5
*SPOILER BELOW THIS COMMENT* watch the episode before reading the comments.
Also "It was beautiful guys" lol that was said so sweetly
I swear with the amount of one's Bregor has rolled he's going to come along one day and just roll 20's
Vincent traveled back in time, he was not rewinded.
Nonono, time travelling Vincent carried the ring over with him, replacing both 10 min ago Vincent and the 10 min ago ring.
Why would Future Vincent remember that experience? I will assume because he physically replaces his past self creating Deja Vu. Does that original timeline exist or is it undone by Vincent's actions? That branch does not exist so then why does he go back with that information? Its called a Grandfather paradox. What you describe is alternate history or parallel universe. Somewhere there is a confused Azril standing near a giant blood stained smear and a vanished Vincent. It gets more complicated.
Vincent also went back before he made the wish. Herego he has the wish back?
wtf and I thought season 2 was gonna get boring
It took him back in time. The wish was worded so that he asked to be sent back in time. Not to gain the ability to time travel.
WHY DOES BREGOR ALWAYS ROLL ONES?
Neal said in the Q&A that there would be no other wish. That would just be exploiting some stupid shit and I can't understand why so many people are jumping on it.
That... was amazing.
