Myself, my wife, and two kids shoot trap every Sunday. I figure I’m at around $10k - $12k yearly in ammo. I treated us all to new Berettas this year, 686 Sporting’s for the wife and 2 kids, 690 for me. That was around $14k. Plus memberships, gear (glasses etc), yes it can be pricey. However I don’t smoke, drink excessively or spend time at the casino. Time spent with family enjoying a wonderful sport is money well spent. I don’t regret any of it.
Dave here's a good comparison... buy a boat, rv, snowmobile, etc and it makes your Berettas CHEAP by comparison! Also as you and the family change guns the old guns will still be worth something.
I used to shoot in the 90s with a good friend of mine who is sadly, no longer with us. I have been thinking of getting back into the sport and this might be the way to start. Very informative, thank you.
Spot on , I started on a MK38 at £400 , moved up to a £1000 Webley and Scott 951 Sporter , just bought a Benelli 828U Silver and shot 24g loads with a coach called Jeff Baker . Had 2 lessons and what a difference it made . Shot at Catton Hall today , English sporting , 100 birds and smoked the last 25 . Jeff is 82 and been shooting since he was 9 . Excellent coach and a real gent . If I was closer to your shooting school I would pay you a visit but unfortunately I don’t . Thank you for your videos , you do instill an urge to get out and shoot . I’ll never get to the olympics but enjoy the good company and if I hit a few then all the better 😁
Some folks complain about not seeing the clays. This was a great video for me because it saved me lots of money and time. Here is why, i learned what a trap gun is, I watched gun movement, stance, shoot bottom barrel first, where to hold the barrel when closing the gun, how to mount the gun. I learned nothing from watching the clays break. David may be a great shot but teaching is also where his talent is. THANK YOU
As clay disciplines go yes trap is by far the most expensive, shoot more in less time, and that is where the money goes, as for guns that 3800 will shoot with anything up until the very best guns costing 10to 40x the price
After shooting different guns CG/Browning/Beretta, i have settled on a gun for trap and sporting. It's a Fabarm Elos N2 Allsport. It's a multi choke 32" with an adjustable comb and two interchangeable ribs, 50/50 for ESP and 65/35 for Trap disciplines and it didn't break the bank. I still use a Winchester SX3 Red Performance for skeet because it's more lively. That's me sorted.
I have a sporting gun. It’s a CZ Teal 20 gauge. I’ve joined a local gun club that has 2 trap ranges. I usually shoot 4 rounds on Saturday morning, as that is our opened trap time. Ammo has been $10-$15 a box. My gun works fine once I got the correct chokes in. Will eventually upgrade to a dedicated trap gun..
so true. started trap shooting while still a student with a Spanish single barrel shotgun from Astra that I paid 70DM (maybe around £20 at that time). Used it for nearly 20yrs before finally upgrading to a real gun this season.
Great film. It did a great job of showing that you don’t need a ton of money to get started. I have seen several shooters at my club start with budget guns and equipment, take some lessons, get pretty good, and then slowly upgrade. Great video!
I can't hit a barn door at 20ft!! and bash my cheek up at the same time with my side by side!! Finally have crossed the road and bought an over and under! An MK38 as it happens. I'm in West Oxfordshire so only about 30mins from you...think I need to book a lesson!
In Poland I can buy cheaper shell then do them from components... I do only black powder ones for CAS. Anyway. One training session is like 100 rounds. 100 birds. Entry fee. 200pln (40£). When go to the restaurant is like 300pln or more (drinks...). Then I prefer shooting range. Is much cheaper and gives more good memories.
I agree DTL or ABT are great fun and once you are set up with a gun the ongoing costs are in my opinion quite low. Plus of course you will get some or all of your money back on the gun should you part ex it in the future. The other thing to say about trap shooting is that you are mostly and perhaps always aiming at the clay and not into thin air as with sporting. I shoot trap here in France which is a hybrid of DTL and ABT. I don't spend more than about £20 a week for about 8-10 months of the year as I go. It's a great sport which will give great satisfaction for years to come.
In my case reloading is more expensive then new one. New one fiotchi ttwo trap is like 0.95- 1.00 pln. Reloaded is like 1.30... because shot is expensive... Doing own shot is useless.. no time no place...
Really expensive! Super expensive! in Taiwan, it’s called noble sport, not affordable for common people, just for privileged persons; those few personnel are checked & allowed by government only, not widely, not freely; because very strict restrictions & sever punishment; if there’s against, put in jail for many years, endless or shot to death by government. In Taiwan, absolutely there’s no individual is allowed to buy any kind of real guns or cartridges, can’t bring guns back home or anywhere, can’t go hunting; some officials & media said gun is sin, having gun is preparing to do something criminal, gun is dangerous, gun will kill people, don’t touch gun; so many people fear gun. In Taiwan, it’s “day dream” for individual to buy gun for shooting or hunting freely; promoting shooting is “mission impossible”. So, watching your videos are seemed like to watch drama only; anyway, thank you for sharing, highly appreciated.
so when China comes knocking at your door with guns in there hands, do you put your hands up? No, because you have no weapons to protect yourselves. Your sitting ducks
Very expensive sport if you shoot ATA. Ammo is way too expensive off the shelf and reloading components are out of sight. Hotel, motel, dining, registration fees, gasoline cost all enter into the game. Good trap guns are going to cost anywhere from $1600 to $2500.
for all i could tell you could have been shooting at fresh air,if you want to make a video it might be an idea to make sure the viewer can actually see the clay, just a thought.
DTL can be additive and finding a good budget trap gun is not as simple here in the U.S., but many clubs members may allow a new shooter an opportunity to shoot one of their guns. Thats how I got hooked. Browning Trap guns including BT 99, XT trap can be found and purchased at a reasonable price but not usually under $900. USD. Try it most will like it!! Beware of using field shotguns as recoil is greater because their weight is lighter. JMO

Intetesting- i have ABT before and enjoyed it. Never shot DTL though. Might be worth a go ( times are hard at the moment though).
I shot dtl trap and i enjoy it. It is my recreational activity for the week and i feel a connection to my father

Glad you are now getting on well we would be happy to have you at the grounds thanks TSC David.
I used to shoot trap at a shoot called Holmfirth I loved it shut now noise issues ,I can see you are a good trap shot (nice shooting David.)
Canadian here, how does this differ from American trap. The obvious, two shots and points. But what about distance from the trap speed of the clays?
Best way I found to pay for targets is volunteer your time at an event they usually give you free targets to use.

P.S.- apologies for spelling mistake at the beginning. Also, i should have said " shot ABT" - ( it is early i guess).
Thank you again David.
Like all the info but can't see the targets when you shoot you got the shooting down you need work on camera focus
I keep the expense down by reloading my spent hulls.

If in the US? Yes. End of video.
Thanks for another good video.
Why you recommend 30-32” barrels? Is the a reason behind the longer barrels?
Trap guns typically have longer barrels. Horses for courses. A 30 inch o/u is similar in oal to a 28 inch pump or semi auto.
It depends on the person if you want to put OGC a call we can help you.

OK I want you to do a helice video
Why the pause inbtween shouting pull, reload pause shut gun shout pull.
Every hobby can be expensive
If you get 2 shots per target you should hit 25 for 25
Thats funny grasshopper
Try shooting 100 bird events week in week out then come back and tell us if you want to change your mind.
@@buckshotaaa I shoot a minimum of 100 Targets a week, one shot only and shoot in the mid 90's If I had 2 shots per target I'd have shells left over
