Upgrading From Windows 1.0 to Windows 8 On Actual Hardware

- If you're watching this video, you've probably seen the other videos that prove it is possible to upgrade from Windows 1.0 all the way to Windows 8. However, those videos use VMware to perform the upgrades on a virtual machine (a guest operating system running within a host operating system). This video proves that it is possible to upgrade from Windows 1.0 to Windows 8 on actual hardware, without the use of a virtual machine. The computer I'm using is an Asus EEE PC 1005HA, which is a netbook. The hardware is not exactly the same as it was when I received the computer, as I have replaced the screen, the RAM, and the hard drive. Here is the upgrade path I followed:
Windows 1.01
Windows 2.03
Windows 3.0
Windows 3.1
Windows 95
Windows 98
Windows Me
Windows XP
Windows Vista
Windows 7
Windows 8.1 Preview
In Windows 2.03, you can see I deleted some files. That is because for some reason, those files prevent Windows 3.0 and Windows 3.1 from being installed. In Windows 3.1, I had to rename the WIN.COM file in order to install Windows 95B. I installed 95B as opposed to regular 95, because 95B supports FAT32 file systems, while regular 95 does not. If I had installed regular 95, I would have had to use a FAT file system, for which the maximum size is 2 gigabytes. I didn't want to have to deal with converting the drive to FAT32 and extending it, so I stuck with FAT32 from the beginning. In Windows XP, I had to convert the drive to NTFS in order to install Windows Vista. I also changed the RAM from a 256 megabyte chip to a 2 gigabyte chip. This was necessary because the older versions of Windows such as 95, 98, and Me have a limit to how much RAM they can take, while newer versions of Windows require more RAM.
Anyway, even though the video is sped up 4X, it's still quite long. Sorry about the poor video quality - I don't have a very good camera. And there's no audio (I decided that there's no music I can put on that everyone would like, and if anyone is actually going to even watch this entire video, they can just put on their own music). So if you're going to watch the whole thing, I suggest you make some popcorn, put on your favorite music, sit back, relax, and enjoy the video!

Because Windows NT 3.1-XP does not work without AHCI drivers or IDE hard drive mode. Those OSes work on AHCI mode but not without certain drivers.
If connected to internet, there would be also msblaster in seconds from first start :D

I noticed an improvement with XP and a huge improvement with 7 & 8. But then I had better hardware. In the past I built computers using hardware a generation or two old because it was a lot less expensive. This computer was built using contemporary hardware at the time and it's the fastest system I've ever had.

You know... when I watch this I can't help but feel a jolt of nostalgia and homesickness for those days when computers were so much more mystery and magic, but I also can't help but feel a sharp pang of angst at how even the simplest of things was ten times harder to do, lol. BUT, that will always be the time where I felt like I was unstoppable. All I was missing was a hoodie and a Mr. Robot mask. :-)

A - Upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8 on a computer that was not really built to support Windows 8, or
B - Are the ones who dont like it when interfaces that they have been using for years suddenly change, therefore forcing them to learn a new way to do the same thing that they used to do.
Well, I'm a Gamer and windows 8 is just a workforce pc, while win 7 is more flexible than others leaving win 8 for shit

TheMrTape well all i know is most of the critcal reviews of Windows 8 highlight the change from a start menu to the metro interface as what the reviewers believe to be a negative, and also that they cant do as much with Windows 8 as they could with Windows 7. (who would have thought making the start menu into a touch interactive interface would have cause an uproar, just because of how it looks different than what we have used for over a decade?)
Personally i find that you can do just as much with Windows 8 over Windows 7 if not more. You just have to know how to setup the OS to work for you. of course, if you only interact with the Metro interface there is a more limited user experience. learning to utilize both the metro interface in tandem with the classic desktop, which is still there in Windows 8 can maximize the performance you can get out of Windows.
Thanks! To answer your question, this project took almost the entire summer (I worked on it a little bit every day, when I had some free time). Most of the time I spent on this was not filming the video, but just figuring out how to get these upgrades to work. I had to fix a lot of errors that occurred while upgrading, especially in the older versions of Windows that run from DOS. Filming took a little less than 5 hours, but I sped up the video to about 1 hour and 14 minutes.

Has less to do with Windows than it does with Intel/AMD.
It's because of x86 Architecture, and Microsoft's choice to support it.

BensPortal Erm no, Win ME is a flavour of Win '9X. Win 2k is closer to XP in architecture.
win2000 is a Server OS never meant as a Desktop OS.

The reason it boosts faster because it doesn't shut down, it puts the computer to hibernate. It does not run faster. Put windows 7 in hibernate and start it up and it is the same speed. Why should I work around stuff when I can do it quicker and more logically in windows 7.

Nope, not me ;) I only met Windows at version 3 or 3.1. It was MS-DOS all the way at home before that. I also never had Windows ME, but only 95, 98, 98SE, 2000, XP, 7 and 10.

@@aidancommenting It is possible to trade from GBA Pokémon versions all the way up to the latest game, though you'd need two DS systems with one DS with the GBA cartridge slot. In short you'll want to trade from Fire Red to any of the DS titles (Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, SoulSilver, HeartGold etc with the exception of Black/White 1&2), and from there you'll want to trade Pokémon FROM any of those games TO Black/White 1 or 2. Then you'll have access to the PokéBank.
The only games where you couldn't trade up between systems were the original Red/Blue/Green, Yellow and Silver/Crystal/Gold on the GameBoy. If you have any Pokémon that claims to be from those titles (usually have a PID of 0000001 or something basic) then it was in all likelihood generated from a hex editor and not legitimately caught.
@@Blackjax137 It's possible to get it from the actual cartridge but it requires dumping and a few savedata edits to get the 'mon to be recognized from gb/c to gba. The main thing required was to give the 'mon a location. It's how I was able to get glitch mew from a rom up to cart in XY.

My first OS install. I was around 10 years old. I miss XP so much. Best OS of all time.

The thing is this is fake, it is impossible because the hardware is too old to actually run Windows 8. or windows 7, not even Windows XP.

Unpopular opinion, I fucking love 8.1, I've never had a computer that has run so fast and the menu is actually super handy when you get used to it. You people just hate change, how do you think people who went from say - Windows 3 to Windows 95 felt? Get over it, it runs so much nicer.

I just figured out how to read his text messages and they were very informative. If you have the same type phone even if it's made by a different manufacturer , you should be able to figure it out most of the time. Even if you don't , I would try as much as possible because these days you have to make sure that your lover is faithful !! TheGrandCOL Perhaps Windows 8 is better than 7 in boot times, stability, security, or some other technical thing. I don't know for sure, but others seem to say so, so I will give them the benefit of the doubt. I still say Windows 8 is horrible, because its UI is so broken that it is simply impossible to use, especially if you don't have a tablet or touchscreen laptop. That is my experience, at least. In my opinion, a broken UI makes a broken operating system.

Guys. The reason why he missed Windows 2000 is because you cannot directly upgrade from ME to 2000 or vice versa! He would have to do a clean install which means it'd wipe out everything and start fresh.
So this video still lacks the Windows 2000 and I hope another geek out there will make another video which will include it. Thanks for mentioning it as soon after Windows Me, he jumped straight to XP without a single mention of Windows 2000. And I started wondering why?

I love how it takes 22 minutes (88 real time minutes or abouts) to install and then upgrade from windows 1 all the way to XP then it takes nearly an hour (4 real time hours abouts) to go from xp to windows 8.1. Thats just astounding...

Doesn't matter. It's the truth. I used W8 cause it came with my new laptop and it was like pulling teeth. I upgraded to W7 within a month.

Adding a hacked start menu into won't fix it. I used it for a month and still hated it. And don't say I'm not smart enough to figure it out, because I use Linux distros, which are WAY harder to figure out than Windows 8. You just stop.
