I did this all across my backyard starting 5 years ago. Looks great. Always have a lot of people commenting how nice it looks. And SOOOO much fruit in a little space.
In case people wonder if this method can work with any type of fruit. I have 2 different apples, 1 nadia plum, 1 yellow egg plum, 1 peach-plum, 2 different cherries, 2 different asian pears.
These are great questions: You'll get fruit on wood up until you remove the scaffolds because they are too thick and need renewal. I'd keep uprights low with summer pruning, after harvest. Renew uprights by cutting and leaving a stub with a few buds on it. Those buds will create new shoots that will be your new scaffolds! I'd love to hear how this project goes for you. Have you started it already? If you do this...I want to see photos! PS. my course Fruit Tree Pruning Masterclass might help you along: learn.orchardpeople.com/fruit-tree-pruning-masterclass

After year 3:
Is there fruit on 4-, 5-, and 6-year-old wood?
How do you keep the uprights below 2 meters in height?
How do you renew the uprights?
