Lyrics:
A lonely mother gazing out of her window
Staring at a son that she just can't touch
If at any time he's in a jam she'll be by his side
But he doesn't realize he hurts her so much
But all the praying just ain't helping at all
'Cause he can't seem to keep his self out of trouble
So he goes out and he makes his money the best way he knows how
Another body laying cold in the gutter
Listen to me
Don't go chasing waterfalls
Please stick to the rivers and the lakes that you're used to
I know that you're gonna have it your way or nothing at all
But I think you're moving too fast

Even at 51 years old, this song still gives me the chills. I was living life like every character in this video. Been with over 200 women, sold drugs in Baltimore throughout the 80s and 90s, got shot and went to prison for years. This was all after dealing with a dysfunctional family inside of the house and bullied outside of the house. But I'm thankful to still be alive.
I am impressed with your insight. You seem like someone that really rode the roller coaster of life and survived. I respect you for being honest you are truly blessed.

Chasing Waterfalls" is TLC's way of expressing how people chase intangible dreams with no thought of the consequences. The first verse is talking about an inner city mother-and-son relationship. He is chasing "waterfalls" (money and respect by dealing drugs), but his mother knows this cannot end well. The second verse deals with a man's relationship with a woman. His "waterfall" is casual sex - he has a "natural obsession for temptation." This could mean he is cheating on someone or the woman he is seeing is cheating on someone. Either way, he contracts HIV and dies ("three letters took him to his final resting place"). TLC were big on AIDS awareness - Left Eye would often wear condoms attached to her clothes and in her glasses to promote safe sex.
Actually the girl has a "natural obsession for temptation". She is the one who slept with so many guys and she had HIV and the boy got sick by HIV thanks to her.
Sex. Schmex. What difference does THAT make?
@@brianjude6789 This guy made a wrong interpretation of the second verse. It's not the boy who had HIV, it's the girl who had slept with so many men, the scene where it shows the pictures of all guys she had slept with describes it. And because of her being infected, he got HIV and both die.
No kidding about THAT one, @@miloseviczarko45. I believe you.
@@miloseviczarko45 That was their point 🙄
I don't believe they ever got the credit they deserved, especially this song, made too many people think and people don't like to think

Yeah, so good, that they ripped off Paul McCartneys song "Waterfalls".
First Verse: Gang Life
Second Verse: AIDS
Lefteye Rap: Drug Addiction and Recovery
Chorus: If you think your life is rough, it could be far worse chasing after things that are no good for you! Don't be a pinhead! Stay safe!

I actually do follow God and have a great faith in Jesus. I justify nothing. I was only translating the song into simple terminology.

@@buggs6608 why's that? Do you hate yourself and the world? Life is shit a lot of the time.
This song is so powerful, raw, and real. T- Boz did exactly as they said and "got the message across without seeming like we were preaching." It also dispelled the myth back then that you couldn't get HIV/AIDS from a woman and the fact that they showed a white, heterosexual couple with the disease shows that it wasn't just a "gay and/or African American only" disease. The purpose of rap and hip hop is to spread awareness of social issues and give lessons as well as being entertainment. They did a great job.

Nope that’s why we’re still all listening to fierce music from 30 years ago!
Mother-son relationship, when there may be no one else in the home. Mother acutely feels lost opportunities in what happened to son. Then, there's something we'd not seen before, how TLC women shot this video. The "waterfall shapes" & the "what looked like "holographic images." TLC was a culture. They were a definite time period in the 90s. It's legendary.

[Verse 3: Left Eye]
I seen a rainbow yesterday, but too many storms have come and gone
Leaving a trace of not one God-given ray
Is it because my life is ten shades of gray
I pray, all ten fade away
Seldom praise Him for the sunny days
And like his promise is true
Only my faith can undo the many chances I blew to bring my life to anew
Clear and blue and unconditional skies
Have dried the tears from my eyes
No more lonely cries
My only bleeding hope
Is for the folk who can't cope with such an enduring pain
That it keeps them in the pouring rain
Who's to blame for tooting 'caine into your own vein
What a shame, you shoot and aim for someone else's brain
You claim the insane
And name this day in time
For falling prey to crime
I say the system's got you victim to your own mind
Dreams are hopeless aspirations in hopes of coming true
Believe in yourself, the rest is up to me and you

Not an American black woman. I'm a whiter than white Scottish woman born in 1971. Surely, I have nothing in common with TLC. I thought so, too. But, wow, did I love this song. Now I'm 53 and totally recognise why this song... and others, spoke to me across ethnic groups and an ocean. These women were ahead of their time. I applaud them for their struggles - personal, financial, prejudicial and sexual. I bow to you and thank you for all, Lisa you should be here to celebrate with your band mates, for showing the world what girl power really looks like.
Actually if Lisa was still alive she would your same age, she was also born in 71, you have more in common than you thought.
im a white american man and like the song and left eye lopez
A Canadian woman, I'm in the same boat as you, @funkyfreya71. Except I'm older.
Gawd, stop apologizing for being white. Either you like the song or you don't. Enough of the DEI BS that white libs feel they have to subscribe to.
We were too young to understand the deep message of this masterpiece... Now that we're older it hits harder. 😭 😭
I was 12 when i got my TLC album. I knew what this song meant, its pretty clear in its verbage. I think what hits harder now is fully understanding the implications(side effects) of the stories and everyone it effects and how. Wisdom over knowledge in this situation, its pretty clear the subjects they are talking about, the actual impacts on life around the stories is something you have to actually live to understand.
I grew up a bad kid, got into a lot of trouble and saw my parents frustration and sadness. Two people i knew got shot and killed at that time, one died in jail. Later on two more got dead living the game... that i had left by that point. Its just fucking sad. Then you have AIDS and it was something that even 12 year old me knew about, from school and the news. The AIDS epidemic was brutal back then, i met someone years back that got it from being drugged and raped. Luckily hes still around thanks to advancements in medicine but... fuck man. So many people died. Of course, another big factor in knowing about the AIDS part was that Forest Gump also came out in the same year.
Too hard
Hey
I always knew what it meant, but agreed!!
Ok
I think metaphorically this song is about not taking risks so fast, especially when you don't know what you're getting into. The lakes and rivers is safety, and the waterfalls are risks. Like that old saying think before you act, that's the same for living in extremes, the more you get in to it, the more it'll cost you your life. We need more songs like this that gives you a message about how to live a balanced life.
Its about HIV/AIDS
solamente the person is not wrong, you are neither its also about drugs. It has multiple meanings.
@@solotm2259 no it's not just about HIV. It's about how taking risks (such as having unprotected sex or dealing drugs) could cost you your life.

Today, I heard this song on the radio. I went home and played it again on RUclips. The way T-Boz sang the song is spellbinding to me. Such talent!
I think people tend to overlook at how monumental this song/video was and is. Not only for the message but the overall impact it made when it premiered. TLC as a group brought urban and social awareness to the forefront of pop culture at a time when soceity was plagued by stigma. They literally made the world stop and pay attention to the relevance of African American youth and the hiv/aids epidemic. No female group has ever dominated in the many ways TLC has. They were the first.
Back in the 16th century no matter what happened people always blamed god for it and they prayed every day, the beliefs in god back then were really strong/I was just trying to give people a different perspective on the belie very in god
Tee Mee was thinking this after just watching. haven't seen this since it was on MTV. there's really nothing anymore like this in the rap and rnb genres. it's like they really did this song for the people/fans, not for themselves so fans just buy their music.
on a side note, I really think after 9/11 all this went away. we became scared as a nation and focus is more on ourselves. making sure we're secure at the price of dismissing our community and surroundings. the 90's weren't perfect, but it was on a decent track for community until it was completely derailed in 2001. lots of things changed, and even though it's not a sharp line, there's a major split from music pre and post 9/11. more than the usual contemporary progression. genuine useful messages in a song are a sad rarity these days. damn.
Tee Mee this was a great song as a young kid I didn't appreciate how good this song was it had a great message and also displayed great musicianship with the band in the background this song touched so.many people's lives and so many people could relate to this song my mom is another generation obviously but u know when this song comes on she jams to it any song from my Era that my parents jam too I know is good music

lol my very first cd that wasn't country! I am 40 and still listen to this cd!
You right !!! I'm 42 and remember it word for word .. remember carefree me and didn't know how right my momma was when she said stop trying to grow up so fast ...
I miss being home with my momma protected from the stresses of adulting .
Yup
@@stephaniecalhoun804💜 expand your mind. ☮️🙂🙂🙂 I'm 65. I love a variety of music, from all genres.
I owned this album on tape when I was a kid. Growing up in the 90's was a great time to be alive.
Love the video with TLC, them ladies looking good and the song is very true about people living a bad situation and its worst to everyone for good reason, R.I.P Left Eye.
Did you know the part that says"three letters took him to his final resting place" it's about HIV? This song treats about drug addiction but also about HIV.
3:04
Just as that scene appeared I was reading over this comment
Yup, also the way the girl takes away the condom from his hand
Karen Walker, yes I did know that. freakin' sad shit. Any mother (real mother) can relate to this if any of their kids went that way. Such a moving song.
i'm not missing waterfalls for this, WATERFALLS IS MY JAM!
Scream Queens😍
+ordinarydannyboy i was lowkey waiting for the rap
+ordinarydannyboy it is a song about getting AID and HIV
"she gives him loveing his body can't handle" to a derict reference to her son getting AIDS
Emily Savrin I think it's deeper than aids and HIV... its about him prioritsing the wrong things in life and he should have stuck to the safer things 'the things hes used to'. so because he went chasing waterfalls he died
checking in here in 2024 see yall in 2025
Amazing, the lyrics made me think a lot and that is what real music should do.
This song takes me way back
Makes me grateful my son finally sought help for his addiction. The night I found his car at the hospital I was at rock bottom, too and didn't care if he took his own life because I was so tired of fear. Today, years later, he is doing so well; new wife, nice home with a pool even, job for a long time only he started smoking cigarettes along with his wife.
Thank you for that
I find you everywhere
@@fruityziplock8876 then you have amazing taste in music it seems lol
@@NostalgiaMan I came here from a scrubby video actually 😂 I saw you in digital nexes video and something else
I just now realized that this song references HIV- "Three letters took him too his final resting place". It only took me almost 15 years.
Laurie Smith I thought it was STD since HIV is a virus that can be treated before AIDS
It could be treated, but not if the person didn't know/refused to admit they had it, and in the '90s, it was still kind of taboo to admit to having it, especially if you were a straight male (ie, it was the 'homosexual disease'). None of the other diseases were an immediate death sentence like AIDS was back when this song came out. Back in the '90s, especially '95 when the song came out, HIV itself was a death sentence. I found a small article from the CDC back from 2003, that mentions they're talking about AIDS:
"TLC's 1995 hit "Waterfalls" also addressed the danger of HIV."
www.thebody.com/content/art28606.html
It could go both ways HIV or STD any STD can kill you
Yup
@@RapFanatic4ever thats what people dont know they can die from a regular std because most of them are curable and they look at it like aids is the only thing u can die from but its a lie
Thank you All The Saints in Heaven.Glory to Our Kingdom Heaven ❤
They are sooooo cool❤ but .... Blending jazz, blues, and that something else ..... Masterfully done sistas !!!!
It's crazy how good left eye was. Her flow and her tone of voice was unbelievable and effortless. She would be a mega star to this day topping the charts.
Have to disagree, I think her voice was ridiculous, she had flow fo sho but yea nowadays rap and r&b is dead.
@@showmeclips9031 why is it dead? Also rock seems to be flat lining

Left Eye was one of the coolest 90s chicks. She hosted that rap competition on MTV too, which really showcased her killer personality. RIP Lisa!
Lisa left eye I miss her
she cant be gone i swear it the whole thing doesnt sit right with me if she is dead and i do mean if because i have my douts and i knows its crazy but if she is dead she is with all the other kings and queens we have. lost along the way i still have this fantasy that one day she just gonna show up and be fine i know its unrealistic but i wont let go she isnt dead until she has been thought of for the last time and i will never forget her
Classic! Powerful message too. TLC will always be the G.O.A.T.s! RIP Left Eye 😔💔🕊
This is so 90s.. and Left Eye's rap is from another world
My favorite rap in a song! That girl had bars.❤❤❤RIP Lefteye. I wonder what she would be doing now had she lived.
U suck.
Left Eye killed it with the rap, R.I.P mama 🙏🏽
RIP Left Eye 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
Yes She Absolutely Did!!!
Wait your moms dead because R.I.P mama?
"Dreams are hopeless aspirations, in hopes of coming true, believe in yourself, the rest is up to me and you." These lyrics that Lisa sang were powerful they were engraved on her casket on the day of her funeral .. May she rest in peace.
thanks for this. The only one who can make your dreams come true is YOU. It is the choices your make in life. It is up to YOU. TLC changed my life, and I grew up with them as a kid. I have found, over and over and over again, in life, the only vehicle of change for one's dreams is YOU. And there are all sorts of ways to do it, even if you fail, over and over. It is NEVER too late to take action. Never.
So true❤️💪
her verse is on her headstone. you can't no better than these words. she truly did believe in humanity.
This was written after the house fire and rehab and coming home fresh & definitely moving forward with a better focus💜she wrote this🥰a new love of self & she was a military brat!
Thank you mom for making me listen to this in the car when I was in 2nd grade, I love this song man
Such a sad, true, real song, RIP left eye, you were a hell of an artist gone but never forgotten she had such a beautiful voice IMO
She was beautiful in pretty much every way:) Messing with that damn cell phone;(((

Left Eye's is literally the best verse any female rapper has ever spit. Period
Way ahead of her time!!

@k c ok
she reminds me of female 3 stacks
u only say that cause she dead...
I’m gen z and when I have kids they are definitely gonna be listening to this and all of the other amazing songs of this generation. I’ve always listened to them with my mom and when I was little I didn’t enjoy them but the older I get I love them so much. And I don’t want my kids growing up and listening to a lot of todays music without listening to old r&b first. This is some of the best music of their time. I’ve been listening to this and many other songs for my whole life and I love them all!
色褪せない。凄い。
We need more positive music like this in the mainstream
They don't want that, they want to break down the family, so your stuck to hedonism and materialsm, but.... good music exists you just have to go looking for it and not be influenced by what's "popular" Because it's sponsored by special interests groups. Strategically selected for nefarious undisclosed purposes, sorry folks your idols are all curated because they are willing to play ball with the master Architects plans.
@@germanikolaas you got that right

"Three letters took him to his final resting place"
Jesus that shit is too sad and too real. The 90's were a hell of a time both good and bad. Still wish I could go back, it's better than now even ignoring the pandemic and widespread panic. So many things that I miss.
Brownie Amanteigado girl WHAT? people still died and it was awful regardless
gurl fix your eyebrows
Each time period is good in it's own way, if someone doesn't like nowadays it means his/her best days are gone, they didnt succeed eventually, its okey to have a nostalgia, but c'mon, people, stop complaining and do something if this time/generation is so bad...
