I think by character she means that more literally as in the fictional version of one’s self that one deludes themselves with in order to sleep at night.
It's bazaar hearing some of the things she is saying *about her self*. Like, these are things people say to describe another person they are trying to support. When you say them about yourself it doesn't mean anything....
I do not work in Asset Protection, but I do work in a walmart. Let me tell you, if they catch wind of you stealing they literally keep track of what they can prove you steal, add up the value until you qualify for a felony, and then they do something. They've probably had their eye on her for a while. Also, this is a PSA: DO NOT STEAL PRODUCTS SOLD BY THE POUND! If they catch you stealing a steak they will literally find the heaviest, most expensive steak on the shelf to claim is the value that you stole.
I think someone needs to remind my local ones to let it get to a felony. I see so many articles where they let someone get to $300-$400 in a couple months max then have them arrested. That's still a misdemeanor here though.
When I worked AP, we took the most representative price for weighed product. Also, we rarely stop people who are stealing for desperation but the second you grab a bottle of booze or some Nikes we’re done.
its absolutely wild to hear her say she is “unsubscribing from this drama” when girl committed crimes lol. when it comes to retail theft i am extremely understanding in situations of families who simply cannot afford to live, but when its influencers stealing their haul thats just disgusting.
wait, why disgusting if you don't mind my asking? I get not having the sympathy of someone genuinely struggling, but why be disgusted on target's behalf?
@@TheRaquelephantI think it’s more disgusting in the way that people are so desperate to do the trendy influencer stuff like hauls that they’ll steal a bunch of stuff, like just the overconsumption culture to the point of doing illegal things
@@TheRaquelephant Look into the social contract theory, it's less about Target itself IMO and more about small steps that lead to greater issues if left unregarded.
Perhaps they saw that she has a large audience online that might copy her behaviour and thought the risk would be minimalized if they take care of the situation now
Ex Target loss prevention guy here - Targets has invested a large amount of money into the technology to make the process of finding, documenting, recording, and identifying people who shoplift as easy and scalable as possible. What most don’t know is that yea sure you might get away with a few things here or there, but there’s a literal team of people at each store who catalogue everything you have ever taken and identify you to either arrest you themselves or via police. It happens every single day, and that I did that. I have tons of stories about it all. Ask any questions if you’d like on the process if you’re curious since I am glossing over A LOT.
@ it depends, if it is a regular, always taking stuff, we would wait till they hit a certain dollar value so Target could prosecute and recover some money at the same time. Target is not gonna spend the money for court fees if it’s not gonna win/ get back what they lost in both time and merch. If someone comes back a few time and the dollar value of their thefts are really high then we go for it a lot sooner.
@ if you’re talking about facial recognition software that is dependent on the state laws. Some allow for it while others don’t. Even without that software there are multiple ways that help identify someone like the name on debit, gift cards, receipts, car license plate, what you steal, where it ends up, heck we even talk to other stores in the area to see if they recognize them or send out BOLOs.
They'll send you to target jail if you scan a single item you have two of twice and put both in the bagging area. You get the Target death penalty if you do it again.
@@toadstool30 I found similar information on Target's corporate website under the article title "An Unexpected Career: Target’s Forensic Services Laboratory".
I was in grocery store loss prevention for a walmart/target competitor for a few months, and let me tell you-- the things i saw in just the time from when i started in October to when i had to leave in January due to an unforseen move. In my experience, there are a few different categories of shoplifters: a) accidental shoplifters. Literally scanned everything, got distracted, forgot to pay, walked off with the cart. Some even come back to pay, like my buddy did when she and i were shopping and one of the barcodes on one of her items wasnt working. We got to the car, she realized after we'd driven a block, we turned around and brought everything back and paid. Iconic moment 😂 b) desperate people in need sliding a few food items here and there in the self checkout lane, not a huge deal. If we can deter with customer service and recouping a few of the slid items, cool, but they're not the ones responsible for the major losses. We're not going to go for a stop, and probably not going to bother with a pd case. (Honestly, we might not even notice.) c) opportunists. Underage kids shoving Snoop Dog 19 crimes and vodka into his hoodie (i hope that kid is okay. His dad came in and was clearly drunk and showed signs he was abusive at home. 0/10 experience to witness that stop, and i hope that kid was able to get out of home and find a better crowd.) People leaving items in their cart and not scanning them, or simply walking out the door. No fancy tools, no tricks. d) habitual self checkout gamers for personal use. Sliding lots of items (like scanning one box of cereal and putting two in the scanned area), switching tags like she did, etc. I once found a pretty big case after doing a self checkout audit and found an old woman who stole like 20 full size yankee candles over the course of a few weeks by sticking barcodes from the $2.99 votive candles over the real barcode. She did this for, like, everything in her cart. There was another lady who slid probably 2/3 of her cart. A lot of it was food, but said food was king crab legs and like 10 boxes of frozen pizza. This is decent chunk of external loss. e) oranized retail crime shoplifters. These folks will load up a cart with expensive items, like small kitchen appliances, gaming systems, high value branded clothing, or home items for resell, like a cart full of Tide, or a cart full of baby formula. People stealing baby formula because they need it steal a few cans of one type, not 20 of various. They'll either walk out the front door with no attempt to blend in, bag their items in the aisles and try to sneak through an empty checkout lane, remove sensor tags and security wraps, or just push out the fire exits in the back of house. They either sell their items to their own customers or sell them to a fence, which is like its own little store which sells to customers. These are the big fish we try to catch. I can say with confidence she'd been doing this for awhile and was just now caught because she got too cocky. First timers don't pull bullshit like ticket switching. I have sympathy for people who steal because they have no choice. But people like her who are stealing shit because they can't afford to continue the curated materialistic façade for content? Lmao get wrecked, serves you right.
I was almost a accidental once. I was just going through the motion at a self checkout and was four items bagged before i realized I hadn't scanned a single one
Like I agree this gal was stealing for the wrong reason but who gives a shit if someone steals from a corporation? When I worked retail I wasn’t paid enough to give a shit.
Thanks for saying people should NOT disclose their crimes in the comment section. There's a video from a law professor where he's hammering down the need to NEVER talk to the police. Then he invites a sheriff to speak and the sheriff says people will confess easily, then he asks who in the audience have ever driven over the speed limit, and a bunch raised their hands and the Professor was "DUDE... Are you not paying attention?" People need to STFU, if you're doing something ilegal, don't record, don't brag, don't talk about it. Don't even mention ever. STFU.
I can’t take it anymore. I have to admit this. I was late returning a book to the school library once. I knew it was wrong and did it on purpose. I have lived with this shame for decades and I can’t take the pressure anymore. But yea, seriously, don’t record your crimes. Don’t admit to crimes. Make them prove it. Make their job hard by not helping them.
Not to sound boomer-esque, but social media has definitely contributed to this...not that idiots have never bragged about crimes theyve committed, that's always been going on, even people claiming murders they didn't commit to...sound cool? But now we're incentivized to post anything and everything online, way more opportunity to do so.
Thank goodness for the human need to be heard, our complete inability to keep secrets means many many murders are solved by just waiting until the killer's confidants call.
So she either did it again, or target had video of her doing it multiple times bc anotherrrrrr video of her at self checkout stealing stuff just came out. So you were right about it being a habitual thing.
@@permonti2958Yes that’s how many places work. I believe it’s at $1000 worth of items because that’s when you hit a felony. Also the cameras at the checkout aren't the only ones they are watching you with and you'd be surprised how good of quality the security footage is.
She did it again yea. It was a completely separate instance, literally in December, two days after posting that GRWM (other channels have more detailed info but I don’t expect swell to stay glued to this)
Marlena has to absolutely have some sort of kleptomania-- she was arrested in 2019 as a teenager when she stole her best friend's car and crashed it (or totaled, can't remember) near a Dunkin. She was arrested in 2023 for stealing from Walmart and pleaded No Contest to those charges and was given 6 months probation in April 2024. SHE HAD JUST GOTTEN OFF PROBATION when she stole from Target. And then she was arrested again from stealing from that same Target location again after her first arrest (hence why she was in custody again). May at this point be a combination of kleptomania and doing anything to keep attention on her content.
i got caught shoplifting at target as a young teen…thank god they just called my mom and banned me from that specific target lol. getting caught taught me a real lesson and I’ve haven’t stolen since but target is definitely no joke.
lol I stole candy when I was a kid and my mom made it seem like stealing from target would land me on death row. I never stole again. Scared straight fr 😩😩😭
I love the one poster on tumblr that admitted to actually roleplaying as a shop lifter. That was the excuse they used to post stuff in that tag and this one person legitimately was only roleplaying and taking pics of their sister's stuff (legally bought). Some people just want to cause mess and that is incredible.
Idec if people steal im not gonna cry for target, it just pisses me off how obviously bad at it she is😭😭 Also her getting arrested for stealing AT TARGET WITH HER KIDS *WHILE out on bond* is so like??? girl are you stupid???
No one is crying for target, they're crying for their pocket. Shoplifting goes up = insurance for the store goes up + profit goes down = higher operating costs for grocery store = higher costs of goods for everybody. Stores aren't going to eat into their shareholders' profit, they just pass that cost off onto the consumer via more expensive goods.
EXACTLY. My mom tells her high school students all the time "Cheating is HARD if you wanna do it well and not get caught." I think it's a lesson that applies to a lot of life, and this woman obviously needed to hear it....
@@slumbrrbunniethat’s not how it works 😂 prices go up from corporate greed, not to “match insurance prices”. they literally throw away so much inventory daily- and write it off with insurance.
The only crime I admit to is selling sweets at school during the “health” reforms. Powerade isn’t any better for you than soda and we all know it. It’s all sugar water. You aren’t fooling anyone and kids aren’t stupid. But they took the Diet Coke too! There were no longer options for kids who had dietary restrictions. They took the 3 vegan items out of the vending machine and replaced them with super sugary stuff with eggs and dairy - all conveniently from the same distributor. We all knew these weren’t actually about health, but saving money and control, which is why we flat out refused to cooperate. The “improvements” were objectively worse and we were not about to take that lying down. Any statute of limitations is well past up, and it wasn’t that big of a deal to begin with. I don’t think anyone is still trying to noodle through the great candy boom of ‘03-‘07 in my home town. My friends and I sold sweets, cookies, sodas, etc and made bank every day. We were known at Costco and the other bulk stores- this group of misfits in black buying up a carload of snacks and soda every week, but were always polite and respectful. When asked we told them we were running a vending machine company, which wasn’t that far from the truth. We made sure to maintain options for vegans and those who couldn’t have sugar, and actually took care of our clientele. We even sold occasionally to teachers who we knew wouldn’t rat us out. There was more than one occasion where I was approached by a teacher who just wanted a soda with their lunch and they’d slip me money in exchange for having one or two mysteriously appear in their desk drawer or an agreed upon cabinet. I’m honestly proud of little me and my delinquent friends for turning a bad situation into an opportunity. One of my friends used that money he made to buy a car. Another got him and his little brother a place to stay so they didn’t have to stay with abusive relatives any more. I launched a bathing suit business that I ran for about 5 years. Another bought a ton of stocks and slingshot himself into an impressive investment profile. We were little trouble makers, but we were little money makers too.
Honestly I'd love to see a teen coming-of-age movie about that sort of situation; with a great screenplay and a director with plenty of visual style, it would be a lot of fun. If you're comfortable sharing details, where did you store the snacks? I assume that one of you kept the bulk of inventory at home or in a car, but did you sell out of a locker or something?
Reminds me of my high school history teacher (who was also a coach for our hs women's sports teams like swimming/tennis/etc) who was all around very based, very fun class and very chill to hang out with. He let students hang our during lunch in his classroom (he even had a couch!) and he sold snacks in secret for like 1 or 2 dollars. Stuff like chips, drinks, I even once bought cup-of-noodles from him cause he had those too, as well as a microwave for said noodles. He got caught by the teachers/principal and had to stop selling... which lasted about a month 😭. I kinda forget but the only added restriction was you had to stay in his room and finish it in there (unless you got a water, which was free iirc). Then he got caught a second time like 2 months after that and ACTUALLY stopped that time, at least as far as I know. That was my senior year so who knows, but I feel like he would lay low until next school year just to start again 😭
Overconsumption for content is so frustrating I see it on booktok all the time. I feel like big book hauls have convinced people that reading is a really expensive hobby when it’s really not at all. Influencers are called “influencers” and should really be more cognizant of what kind of shopping habits and lifestyle aspirations they’re promoting.
That's so wild cause reading is probably the cheapest hobby. Like, libraries are literally free! More books than you could read in a lifetime for no money at all!
In fairness about libraries, access does make a huge difference. When I lived 40 minutes away from a library, I spent an embarrassing amount on books to have access. Now that I have a library 2 minutes away (with a really good ILL system), I find myself avoiding bookstores for the most part. That being said, use your local library! They even had access to resources when food was tight for us -- there's a lot more there than you'd think.
People should focus on budget influencing, dumpster diving, finding stuff on the curb, thrift flips, reduce, reuse, recycle. Let’s save the planet and our money.
I find dumpster diving videos so much more interesting than hauls from big companies like.. idk maybe cause you’re not being sold to it’s just someone finding cool stuff and showing it
@@somegeeseidk I appreciate the videos of people restoring furniture that’s had awful DIY and would otherwise go to landfill. Genuine salvaging should be encouraged

With the whole ignoring celebrities trend, I will be very interested in seeing what some influencers do to stay relevant to maintain the lifestyles they wish to have.
I highly doubt many people have enough self control to stop paying attention to influencers and celebrities they like lol. I mean people whine on Reddit about influencers…..yet won’t stop watching their content. It’s wild.
"My team" _GIRL_ _TEAM???_ You cannot be lying that loud, that's just downright hilarious. Ain't no one with a team have to be told not to record themselves shoplifting 😭😭🤣🤣🤣🤣

She likely got her charges upped because target will wait to file charges until you steal over a certain amount so they can stack charges. They purposely dont grab people on their first offence unless that first offence is already over a certain dollar amount.
I once bought a hello kitty bag that had 2 $60 electronics in the front pocket from Target. The funny thing is the bow on the front of the bag was hanging off, which made me grow attached. Feeling the need to take it home and fix it. Now I think it was cut for a person to identify which bag had the "goods" in them. It was probably a group op from the start. But the way they taged the bag was perfect bate for a sap like me, who feels sad for these items and takes them home to fix and love. I didn't notice the electronics until I got home and returned them the next day. But that's how my poor little hello kitty bag was almost entangled into crimes. It now lives a crime free life with me, bow still detached. I never did get to fixing it but, damn, do I still love that bag.
I’m sorry for being entangled into that but thank you for taking an item that you know wouldn’t get any love and giving it the love 🥹 whether you fix it or not, as long as you love it, that’s all that matters
Target usually does not go after people for shoplifting until they hit $1000 (they can press harder charges), so either they went and found evidence of her stealing more, or they’re going after her specifically to prove a point because she’s an influencer
The only thing I’ve ever stolen was a sucker from a hardware store when I was 3. My dad dragged me back to the store and made me pay with the change in my piggy bank. The employee was super sweet and was willing to just let it all go, but my dad was adamant that I pay for it to learn a lesson. I’ve never stolen from a store again.
One thing I've ran into a couple times is a youtuber I'd follow for a specific niche either Automotive or Fitness would have a more or less "regular" life. They'd have a job and make content on the side. This was entertaining and relatable. Eventually they amass a following and are able to quit their jobs and that's usually when the shift happens. They slowly start morphing into these "influences" that are wholly unrelatable and their content just losses it's appeal. For me part of the appeal was seeing how people juggled life/work/fitness/hobbies. The push/pull and the sacrifices is what's interesting. Once they start complaining about how big their house is, is usually when I sign off.
The switch in videos I attributed as the difference between someone making videos for their own entertainment/love of the craft, and making videos based on what can fund their lifestyle. It's like an inevitable fact that small youtuber you like will grow to the point they change. I have seen this shift in donut media even though donut had a full time crew from when they started making videos they used to be more in depth on the cars and at sum point they shifted to pumping out content and the stuff they started making I no longer loved to watch. It happened slowly, one day I realized they hadn't made a video I loved in awhile, that moment of realization. I think is inevitable for most of the creators I watch so I enjoy the videos while I can. I know I started Amanda/Swell Entertainment as event reviews for events. Many I would love to attend, but I know that's unlikely to happen, so I get to watch and enjoy the reviews. Watching Swellmass will be interesting and I have enjoyed Amanda's content so far but one day I may look at this channel too and no longer see anything that I find watchable. That day is not today. Change is normal and most channels change especially when they grow alot rapidly and I think that switch tends to be marked with the youtuber becoming full time as the first step in the transition to influencer. I don't think that's a coffin nail though as Amanda has been full time for awhile and still puts out great stuff.
can confirm, target's quite serious about theft. i currently work at the starbucks inside my local target (please please please be nice to any baristas there especially this holiday season it's been rough) and we had asset protection come talk to us about notifying them if we see a certain lady with printout photos who has a history of buying her drink, hiding her cart off to the side while she does so and then leaves having paid for her drink but none of the stuff in her cart. had a kid with her in one of the photos (face blocked out) and honestly i just felt bad, as well as on edge that now it was my responsibility to help catch someone who may be stealing groceries because they've fallen on hard times :/
@chriscritical7614 thanks. we're not allowed to solicit them but i did get a few cash tips - not many though. we also don't get shift drinks because it's an "unfair advantage over the other target employees". it also gets suuuuper busy during the holiday leadup and black friday was a neverending line. i finished my seasonal tenure and i'm outta there
In some corners of the LEGO community, this activity has a name. It''s "Doing a Swanberg" named after a man, William Swanberg, who was arrested in 2005 after doing this exact thing. He was printing out barcodes for small LEGO sets ($20 ish) and pasting them onto expensive LEGO sets ($100 - $300) and selling them online. He was caught at a Target store, but he was doing this at Toys 'R Us, Wal-mart and other toy stores. The way I hear it is that Target introduced some measures to make sure that people couldn't get away with this for as long as he did (2002 - 2005) So, don't do a Swanberg!
To be honest with how wide spread haul videos are I've always suspected the majority of people who do them as their main content either: 1) buy, film, return or 2) steal.
God i love how so many of your videos have the aside "Im not encouraging you to do crimes" Please give me the Swell crime tips series, i love how logical you are about it. You're so right about everything 😂
I got caught stealing once, right after I'd made 19. The officers chewed my ass out, I cried like a baby, and then MIRACULOUSLY they let me go. To this day I remember their faces. And if I ever saw one of them, I'd hug them. Cause I never stole since and they could have EASILY.... put me in jail, given me a record, and ruined my life.
Haha same happened to me when I was 18. Got put in a holding room with two big shopping centre security guards who threatened to call the police. I was so scared I thought my life was over. I was just a dumb teen who hadn’t learned about serious consequences. I don’t think they ever planned on calling the police since I gave back what I stole, which was some cheap jewellery and a £15 shirt from H&M. They sure scared me straight though and I never stole again 😅

im sooo glad you brought up shoplifting tumblr, i wasnt involved but as you said, nosy, and it was such a wild concept. i always loved posts of people justifying them stealing 8 random makeup items from a shoppers and saying its the same as stealing formula for low income families
So many good points. One thing I realized is that content creation & influencer career paths are becoming inextricably tied with one another. I’m trying to start an art channel/career and it’s been so weird to realize the best shot I have is marketing ME. It’s so weird! Kasey Golden is an artist I love following because she’s interesting and cool. I also love Edvasian because he doesn’t do anything weird to be an influencer.
I get paranoid just bringing in a large bag into a Target because I don't want the employees thinking I'm about to use it to sneak out merchandise, I will never understand how anyone feels so confident that they can get away with shoplifting in a store than takes that shit seriously
Here’s a thing y’all should know, from someone whose husband is a PML at a big box store: yes, she probably had done this before, because stores like target and Walmart, use facial recognition and watch people steal things repeatedly until they have reached a level of merch taken that is a felony and then wait to arrest them then. So yes, Target probably already knew what she was doing, and waited until she had stolen enough to make it worth their time to nab her. Happy holidays lol

Its always wild to me to hear this as someone whos worked retail for over 7 years. Maybe its just the stores ive worked at but shoplifting has never been a big deal, and ive never seen someone stealing nor known anyone who really cared except when we find empty packages *without* barcodes so we have to hunt those down to write them off. Ive also never been to Target specifically, but damn do they not play around apparently
Most big box stores do not mess around with theft. Thing is though that it’s not something regular employees have to worry about except for reporting it to the loss prevention team. Most places will wait until they have proof of you stealing at least $1000 worth of items because then you can be charged with a felony.
It depends on the type of shop and the type of product, the most valuable to shoplifters are ones that can be easily traded in or sold on. I worked at a small supermarket when I was younger and the main items i remember getting taken were pregnancy tests and condoms, because both can be easily swept into a bag and have decent resale value. (It was the fancy pregnancy tests that tell you how far along you are.) After someone took all the boxes of condoms in one go, we were told to put them behind the counter where the customers have to ask for them. I remember thinking 'and now no teenager will ever buy condoms here ever again.' 😂
do you think that shoplifters are just walking out the door with full carts? That’s pretty rare. Of course you’re not going to know someone is shoplifting if you’re just some random employee
You really shoulda let that boat captains loudspeaker message play through🤩😭 i was invested immediately. I think cruising during vlogmas is truly inspired💚🌲
the Weird Explorer does fruit (and occasionally seed/nut/spice/etc) reviews actually. pretty good channel imo, very thorough and sometimes makes documentaries/info-dump films (emphasis on films). he has a cat 10/10 Canned Fish Files w/ Matthew Carlson is also good, but as the channel name suggests he does canned fish and mollusks etc rather than fruit. people, give it a try. he also has cats 10/10
liftblr has been my fave tag to stalk for years lol! finally someone who understands the biggest connection i've made to this whole thing. i wonder if those blogs still post 🤔
I have also spent a lot of time observing liftblr. If you really want to do shady hauls, check the laws on dumpsters in your area. You will be chased and potentially arrested because the cops aren't required to know the law, but they can't really do anything beyond confiscation and trespassing sanctions against you. For many places, the laws are things like locked dumpsters and dumpsters within a certain range of the store being off-limits.
I work at Walmart and I personally don’t care if someone steals especially if they’re hungry or it’s something they need HOWEVER: the employees working when you’re shoplifting get in trouble if they don’t catch you, specifically when you’re switching tags.
That assumes you either have or are willing to spend the money to go through with the initial purchase. Poor people can't afford to do so, rich people are too stingy with their money to WANT to do so. Idk her financial situation but it cuts both ways.
8:19 this is bad and all but I'm floored at 16 random household goods and clothing being FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS? I know I don't shop at target and I know why but damn.
@sayakota3054 Walmart has been know to be place to buy very affordable good. Jeans there used to cost at most $15. Department stores (at least in my area in the USA) have jeans for $25 and up. So for Walmart to have pants priced at $25 to $30 is sooo ridiculous. Let me say for the again: Shit 👏🏿 is 👏🏿ass.👏🏿

I shoplifted food almost every day as a kid. My parents wouldn't let me eat vegetarian and eating meat disgusted me morally + i had allergies that and been left unnoticed. The current situation in America with costs of living is only going to get worse and i cant blame people for stealing. Even if its stealing 'non essentials' Unless its a small business im fine with it. I sell my art and even I can kinda eat the cost if someone steals one of my books and can understand the feeling of desperately wanting something superficial but not being able to do so and make rent. Remember big companies love to push loss prevention as a reason to raise prices but this theft repeatedly proven not to have impact on bottom lines. Stay safe and please dont post your crimes on main. 💖
so you think it’s okay to steal food every single day for years on end because you decided you’re too morally good to eat meat? I feel so sorry for your parents. what did they only serve you slim Jim’s and a side of pork chops? no veggies or sides? what exactly are you stealing as a child to cook for yourself? so you took candy, chips etc because you were a spoiled brat? I met a lady who worked Target in the 90s & got arrested for taking expired cheese from the trash as she was POOR & wanted to feed it to her kids. Fuck these companies

Target really does not mess around. I worked there for a few months one time, and day 1 orientation they told us all how they don’t report the first few times, they just get evidence. Their goal is to get the amount of theft up to felony charges.
I love when influencers do something illegal and then downplay it as much as possible while acting like a victim. We know your house is okay-- you didnt get robbed, you shoplifted 💀 also her actions DEFINITELY define her character
Anyone else remember "lifting" hauls people used to post on tumblr? (tumblr banned the "shoplifting" tag so people came up with code words to keep sharing their thievery) Edit: i wrote this comment like a minute into the video and now I'm at 10:52 lmao
I mean with makeup looks that make people look 5 years older it's a fair range. I've had classmates in highschool who wore full glam looks and looked 25 with heavy contouring
The age gap estimation is so real sometimes, though. In an extreme situation I was once described as "probably an adult" in paperwork filed regarding my identification when I was observed on camera in a hospital. (I was in my late 20's and in organ failure, so I looked middle aged due to my horrible condition but I'm barely 5' and under 100 lbs and was carrying around a small comfort blanket and plush toy in the hospital because I was constantly heavily sedated, confused and highly anxious. It was really anyone's guess!)
Target rlly doesn't mess around, back in high school I had a friend who regular stole from them until one day they got caught and were BANNED from the store 😭
Apparently they have face tracking technology now to catch and track how much people steal and when you steal a certian amount, like 500, they'd report you to the police with evidence. So yeah they really dont mess around
Really I feel like influencers stealing their hauls is just the natural progression from the ones who would do big orders, do the haul video, then return everything.
In my experience as a former Walmart cashier, people who steal shit they don't need are incredibly stupid about it. Once stopped a woman who tried to just, straight-up, walk out with a *full* cart of clothes, toys, and other non-essentials during Black Friday... the one day of the year where *every* employee is at their most vigilant. We stopped her, she left the cart behind, and ran out. And she left her phone in the cart. 😂 The attempted theft ended up being over $700 worth of stuff.
I remember liftblr lol, I made a presentation on it for a criminal justice class. I still have loads of saved posts of "hauls" lol. The naked makeup was a favorite at the time.
Target is one of the worst spots to shoplift. Especially at self checkout. Its all timestamped and documented and they spend so much on loss prevention. They let you get away with it a couple times so you can rack up a felony
what even is the "influencer lifestyle" though?? like the amount of unnecessary upgrades these "influencers" do just to end up in debt/having to shrink down is self inflicted wounds atp. they think that just because you have enough money to afford it, doesn't mean you'll have enough money to maintain it for a while ☠️ these "influencers" heavily depend on one source of income and don't bother branching out in other areas/hobbies that doesn't involve singing/dancing/acting 😭🤚🏻
i miss when "influencers" would have simple rooms but decorated to their aesthetic/personality tbh ☠️ nowadays it's about ring lights and full on backgrounds, and lack of personality in general. it just feels like a big flexing game of who ends up in the most debt
I used to work loss prevention for Target, the biggest reason for our success in apprehensions and convictions was our case building. We would watch the same person come in over and over and shoplift. We would document everything, report the video, and have that case file ready for what we were able to make the apprehension and get the police involved. Every single one of my apprehensions resulted in a conviction.
Oh hey right at the start of the video but i have a story about this type of thing. My partner is a manager at a sporting retail store, and they had a £2000 electric scooter stolen. Police reports in etc etc...but on the side of the van the cameras could see a youtube sticker. My partner decided to search the youtube account in hopes of a lead for the police - turns out he has made a review of the scooter a few days later 😂😂😂 police turned up at his door, took the scooter back and i believe they are taking a legal case against him Apparently they werent the only store he and his wife had stole from, they had also stole from elsewhere snd done reviews lol.
What pisses me off is that AT&T steals $250 from you, nobody is coming to help you. But if you steal $250 from Target??? Your ass going to jail. They're getting the full support of the law.
I don't know if this really counts as a 'living above their means' story, but I watch a lot of people in the budgeting community here on RUclips, and there was one lady who when she started out had these not-too-long, but very fancy, manicured nails. And then a few videos later would have a whole different set. And then another change a few videos later (barely over a week). Finally, she came on with short, unpainted nails and was like, 'Sorry to everyone who really liked the nails, but that's done. I could barely do things in my real life because I hated the feel of those things, and I was spending ~$80 every time I went to do this. How am I gonna come on here and talk to you guys about the smart money choices I make if I'm blowing this much on something I don't even like?' and I had SO much respect for her honesty.

And they’re gonna add it up over time even if they don’t take action at first. Idc if you need to steal but like pick anywhere else but target 🤦♀️
Your comment about trying to convert people over to RUclips is honestly so true. I did a bunch of Advent Calendar shorts this year (trying something new and to share something with my sister who is in a different state), and shared them both on RUclips and TikTok. RUclips, by an infinite margin, outshone in metrics (not like popping off, but visible), and that's just from shorts feed interactions - TikTok had nothing. I try to use TikTok for my sister, since that's her main platform right now, but I can't get into it. It's too many ads, I can't find a good way to curate my feed, so I really only use it to keep in touch. I've been recommending that my sister start making book reviews, but have told her to use RUclips - even with all it's weird, it's still a better platform for discovery and use.
i personally don't care if you're in a tight spot and snag some food or necessities for yourself, but people like this that are financially set that steal for no reason piss me off. people like her are why companies are cracking down heavily on shoplifters, making it difficult for everyone. her having the mugshot in the background tells me she's going to do it again and she doesn't care.
I looked it up, and this second arrest is for alleged theft she committed at the same Target on November 20th. She was arrested for the October theft on November 21st, so basically as soon as she got out, they linked her to multiple offenses and tossed her right back in. She also apparently has a criminal record for theft that goes back a few years.
YOU REDID YOUR INTRO! Gosh, I started watching you before you even came up with the intro. I thought I was going crazy for a second and had forgotten what it looked like lol.
I haven’t thought about liftblr in years. It was the epitome of bad internet rhetoric. Justifications for their stolen sephora ran from “kleptomania exists, i dont have it but some people can’t help but steal” to “its not my fault if employees are affected by the thefts because companies firing them for not stopping shoplifters is illegal” completely oblivious to how there might be some parallels about willingness to ignore the law.
I love how she has the catch-all in her caption saying, "We all make mistakes." As if we all have accidentally scanned the incorrect barcode on multiple items every time we go shopping. Also SHE HAS KIDS? Yikes. I feel bad for them, hopefully they'll do alright.
Bro the mention of lifting on tumblr brought back so many memories!! As someone who is also nosy, I used to watch and see what everyone would get with a 5 finger discount 😭

Nice tip about not stealing products sold by the pound.
I think someone needs to remind my local ones to let it get to a felony. I see so many articles where they let someone get to $300-$400 in a couple months max then have them arrested. That's still a misdemeanor here though.

Ex Target loss prevention guy here -
Targets has invested a large amount of money into the technology to make the process of finding, documenting, recording, and identifying people who shoplift as easy and scalable as possible.
When does Target decide to call the cops for a person who has stolen multiple times.
How does Target deal with people who wear facial coverings? I've heard about the possibility of like, tracking eye and face shape?
Bootlicker
Target's Loss prevention team is SO ridiculously capable that their forensics labs are regularly used by law enforcement to help in investigations lol
They'll send you to target jail if you scan a single item you have two of twice and put both in the bagging area. You get the Target death penalty if you do it again.

I was in grocery store loss prevention for a walmart/target competitor for a few months, and let me tell you-- the things i saw in just the time from when i started in October to when i had to leave in January due to an unforseen move.
In my experience, there are a few different categories of shoplifters:
a) accidental shoplifters. Iconic moment 😂
b) desperate people in need sliding a few food items here and there in the self checkout lane, not a huge deal. If we can deter with customer service and recouping a few of the slid items, cool, but they're not the ones responsible for the major losses. We're not going to go for a stop, and probably not going to bother with a pd case. (Honestly, we might not even notice.)
c) opportunists.
Gadt damn! A super through comment, respect🫡
I was almost a accidental once. I was just going through the motion at a self checkout and was four items bagged before i realized I hadn't scanned a single one

Are you not paying attention?"
People need to STFU, if you're doing something ilegal, don't record, don't brag, don't talk about it.

Stuff like chips, drinks, I even once bought cup-of-noodles from him cause he had those too, as well as a microwave for said noodles. He got caught by the teachers/principal and had to stop selling... which lasted about a month 😭. I kinda forget but the only added restriction was you had to stay in his room and finish it in there (unless you got a water, which was free iirc). Then he got caught a second time like 2 months after that and ACTUALLY stopped that time, at least as far as I know.
That's adorable.
I’m sorry for being entangled into that but thank you for taking an item that you know wouldn’t get any love and giving it the love 🥹 whether you fix it or not, as long as you love it, that’s all that matters
So endearing. 💕
Target usually does not go after people for shoplifting until they hit $1000 (they can press harder charges), so either they went and found evidence of her stealing more, or they’re going after her specifically to prove a point because she’s an influencer
She stole from the target preciously, and was waiting for the trial for her first target theft when she did this one

Someone made me be that employee once! I just wanted the merchandise back (it wasn't food). Parent made me feel like a priest taking confession.
Saaame
"Why does he sound hot?"
REAL
I think we need to know the answer to this question!
waiting for swell to spill how the captain look, for a friend ofcourse
can confirm, target's quite serious about theft. i currently work at the starbucks inside my local target (please please please be nice to any baristas there especially this holiday season it's been rough) and we had asset protection come talk to us about notifying them if we see a certain lady with printout photos who has a history of buying her drink, hiding her cart off to the side while she does so and then leaves having paid for her drink but none of the stuff in her cart. had a kid with her in one of the photos (face blocked out) and honestly i just felt bad, as well as on edge that now it was my responsibility to help catch someone who may be stealing groceries because they've fallen on hard times :/
Shoutout to you guys cause I know target doesn’t allow baristas to take tips too 👎
@chriscritical7614 thanks. we're not allowed to solicit them but i did get a few cash tips - not many though. we also don't get shift drinks because it's an "unfair advantage over the other target employees". it also gets suuuuper busy during the holiday leadup and black friday was a neverending line. i finished my seasonal tenure and i'm outta there
In some corners of the LEGO community, this activity has a name. The way I hear it is that Target introduced some measures to make sure that people couldn't get away with this for as long as he did (2002 - 2005)
So, don't do a Swanberg!
To be honest with how wide spread haul videos are I've always suspected the majority of people who do them as their main content either: 1) buy, film, return or 2) steal.
The few haul videos I've seen made me wonder what happens. With all the stuff especially when you see a lot of similar hauls from the same person.
i suspect a lot of influencers also may resell things from their hauls on secondhand sites on the sly as like a second income stream.

@@Algae555 DAMN THEY DID ALL THAT TO YOU FOR LIKE $30??? I was definitely caught with at least $200+ stuff. It was stupid, so stupid. None of it was necessary things I needed either. Still amazed to this day I didn't go to jail that day

@@DunkyCapraro to be fair, it was a decent amount of jewellery so I guess they didn’t know how much it was actually worth.
Just let them check your bag if they ask. They are just doing their job
9:48 petite theft? how demure.
Happy holidays lol
especially with 500 from ONE haul? Yeah, she must be at least $1,000 in the hole from stealing, but I'd bet more
That’s why I flip the cameras off after I leave self check out lol
@@emilierobinson8933wtf are you talking about? you flip the cameras off for the whole store? it’s impossible to turn the cameras off on self checkout and it wouldn’t help anyone anyway. “This is not who i am” while proudly framing and showing off her mugshot on her “apology” vid..
It’s also Florida. It’s the one thing the judges hate here.
You really shoulda let that boat captains loudspeaker message play through🤩😭 i was invested immediately. I think cruising during vlogmas is truly inspired💚🌲
14:57 you're gonna be so mad when in 1 year "fruit review" is the most popular food review channel on youtube and you didn't make it.
😅 was just thinking to say the same thing😂
the Weird Explorer does fruit (and occasionally seed/nut/spice/etc) reviews actually. pretty good channel imo, very thorough and sometimes makes documentaries/info-dump films (emphasis on films). he has a cat 10/10
Canned Fish Files w/ Matthew Carlson is also good, but as the channel name suggests he does canned fish and mollusks etc rather than fruit. people, give it a try. he also has cats 10/10
She's not sorry she did bad she's just 'sorry' she got caught

they do
The accidental matching of her description by you made me genuinely laugh so suddenly and noticeably that it startled my entire family
4:48 "Why does he sound hot?" lmao, stahp~
I work at Walmart and I personally don’t care if someone steals especially if they’re hungry or it’s something they need HOWEVER: the employees working when you’re shoplifting get in trouble if they don’t catch you, specifically when you’re switching tags.
Can you not buy a bunch of stuff, do your haul video, then return it for refund? I know people have done that
That assumes you either have or are willing to spend the money to go through with the initial purchase. Poor people can't afford to do so, rich people are too stingy with their money to WANT to do so. Idk her financial situation but it cuts both ways.
Lots of store also have a max dollar about on returns
@ didn’t know that, but it makes sense
You can get banned from too many returns
maybe you could go shopping, put everything in your cart while recording, and then put it back?
8:19 this is bad and all but I'm floored at 16 random household goods and clothing being FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS? I know I don't shop at target and I know why but damn.
I'm guessing "household goods" could include things like small furniture items like plates, decorations etc which can be £40-60 each

I DID NOT go home and record the groceries to brag when i found out. i just said "oh goddammit im an idiot" to myself and was grateful they never asked me to pay it back a different day lmao
Where can we buy your art ? I don’t wanna steal it tho 😅
so you think it’s okay to steal food every single day for years on end because you decided you’re too morally good to eat meat? I feel so sorry for your parents. what did they only serve you slim Jim’s and a side of pork chops? no veggies or sides? what exactly are you stealing as a child to cook for yourself? so you took candy, chips etc because you were a spoiled brat? I wouldn’t brag about this if I were you. Must have been a giant kid
@@sunny-gt7qw i mean if their parents are so unsupportive of their dietary needs that they feel the need to steal, they were probably the opposite of spoiled. you don't seem very bright.
@@sunny-gt7qwgenuine question; what is wrong with you? The amount of assumptions you made just to justify getting angry at a stranger who stole food as a *child* is ridiculous. Wonderful justification, NOT!
I met a lady who worked Target in the 90s & got arrested for taking expired cheese from the trash as she was POOR & wanted to feed it to her kids. Fuck these companies
The only time I ever see the police in my city doing anything is when Target calls them they absolutely do not play 😭
“Do We Know Them” did a podcast episode on her and she got caught for doing the same theft at Walmart’s self-check out. I am pretty sure she is still on probation for the Walmart theft
my favorite example of a “haul” influencer who doesn’t try to fit the influencer mold is Kathleen Illustrated! if you like thrifting and crafts she’s super underrated
She is probably my current favorite RUclipsr rn. ❤️❤️
That's correct, actions are a reflection of the character.
Anyone else remember "lifting" hauls people used to post on tumblr? (tumblr banned the "shoplifting" tag so people came up with code words to keep sharing their thievery)
Edit: i wrote this comment like a minute into the video and now I'm at 10:52 lmao
The police saying she looked 20-35 is brutal lmao
"review a fruit" is so funny
Really I feel like influencers stealing their hauls is just the natural progression from the ones who would do big orders, do the haul video, then return everything.
I love Swell's "why does he sound hot 👀" LMAO 😭😭
In my experience as a former Walmart cashier, people who steal shit they don't need are incredibly stupid about it.
Once stopped a woman who tried to just, straight-up, walk out with a *full* cart of clothes, toys, and other non-essentials during Black Friday... the one day of the year where *every* employee is at their most vigilant.
We stopped her, she left the cart behind, and ran out. And she left her phone in the cart. 😂
The attempted theft ended up being over $700 worth of stuff.
I remember liftblr lol, I made a presentation on it for a criminal justice class. I still have loads of saved posts of "hauls" lol. The naked makeup was a favorite at the time.
Being reminded of liftblr while still actively on tumblr ages me
Target is one of the worst spots to shoplift.
It's only getting worse - there seems to be a trend of "restocking"/overconsumption as content that is so garbage.
I feel safe with you in the comments so I'm reporting you stop making toxic commentss
Her stolen items aren’t even cute ( never ok to steal things) looks like every influencer .
10:41 Im COOKED lemme change my appearance immediately
My partner decided to search the youtube account in hopes of a lead for the police - turns out he has made a review of the scooter a few days later 😂😂😂 police turned up at his door, took the scooter back and i believe they are taking a legal case against him
Apparently they werent the only store he and his wife had stole from, they had also stole from elsewhere snd done reviews lol.
What pisses me off is that AT&T steals $250 from you, nobody is coming to help you. But if you steal $250 from Target??? Your ass going to jail. They're getting the full support of the law.
Target don’t play. If I remember correctly, they also wait to persecute until the amount is large enough to be a felony😮
*prosecute
As someone who worked at a target, yeah they don't mess around with shoplifting, the AP team was on it all the time there
I've never felt so seen in my life, when you mentioned the "lifting" community on tumlbr I audibly screamed

I’m only halfway through but, of ALL the places do NOT steal from target omgggg. Their security is too good and they will keep track of you FOREVER. Every little thing you steal. And they’re gonna add it up over time even if they don’t take action at first. Idc if you need to steal but like pick anywhere else but target 🤦♀️
"Let's say I committed a crime" hey now we all remember you streaming live F1 leader-boards
