    Effectively you are recreating what compact photo cameras do when they flash. You know, those red eye pictures. Strong light on the same axis as the lens. The difference is mainly in light intensity and getting the light in the actual optical path instead of very close to it.
    Cool tutorial, thank you. :)

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  5 лет назад +2

      Thanks Christian……Yes, same principal physics… but this is the way to "maintain" that effect in film (you couldn't with just sticking a bright light on your cam) even with closed iris.

  • @max_pin
    @max_pin 5 лет назад +11

    Glad to see this. I was amazed when I read in Cinefex #155 about BR 2049 that "In designing replicant characters, the production abandoned the telltale metallic eye-glimmer that signified synthetic humans in the previous film. 'The metallic lenses used on the first Blade Runner are no longer available,' noted makeup designer department head Donald Mowat. 'Those lenses were hard, they were uncomfortable and the dangers associated with them were severe.'"
    I wonder if they ever printed a correction.

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  5 лет назад +9

      That is such a bullshit... they should be ashamed! One google search reveals all tricks stated by the original film crew. There is really no excuse. Thanks for exposing this blunder Max.

I knew nothing about "Replicants" or "incept dates" or anything like that. But I was so mesmerized by the movie. The visuals, the music, the sounds. I own the soundtrack. I played the Westwood game. I bought the books. Yea, I am a fan.

    That was awesome! That's by far the best way to do it without too much hassle or ton's of editing! Really quite simple and it costs very little to setup. I also liked the overlay, maybe you could do a step by step on how you created that and wish you would do more like these!

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  6 лет назад +3

      Thank you Richard... the overlay is very basic... just using a couple of masks to blend fitting images.
      Simply use a background that fits your foreground and dissolve the foreground slowly into the background. Duplicate foreground on 3 layers. 1st just 20% transparency (gets some atmosphere in). 2nd very wide feathered mask around your subject. 3rd a narrow fathered mask around your subject. This is not a "works all the time" thing... just work it out for any given task, the human eye is easily fooled. Good luck

    It's basicly the same technic call " Front Screen Projection " used on many film like the first terminator, excepte they use a cinema projector as a light source and some scotch lite screen as oposite to the cornea of the eyes, to reflect the image, very very nice trick; Peter Jackson use a similar approach for the Lord of the Ring 3 there is a scene with a mad king that burn in to a pyre, they replicate the pyre with fire in the other side of the camera with one without fire and the actor, no post effect and CGI where used, amazing.

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  4 года назад

      Very basically… yeah. In the way that a beam splitter is used. I presume that much larger glass in larger distance is used there. Also, the very special thing about this technique is, that the retina of the actor is used as a mirror. The technique you describe was already used for stage acts in the victorian age… Pepper's ghost
      is a good example en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pepper%27s_ghost

    This is fantastic! Thanks so much for breaking this process down in such great, reproducible detail. I'm curious--is the size of the "disc" of light related to the size/shape of the light source or the size of the actor's pupil? To make the disc as large as possible, do I need to find a way to (safely) dilate my actor's eyes?

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  5 лет назад +3

      Thanks and… my pleasure Priscilla. No, from my experience a focussed single source light works by far the best. Shining any light source directly in a eye will of course make it contract a bit. I do it with myself in here a lot and you can see, that they stay open enough to make the effect work. I personally don't like "dilated" pupils, as it makes you look like a deer in the headlights. If you want that look, you can use a camera with good low light performance and use a eye-light with little power. Results are so so because of the low light. If you wanted dilated pupils in bright environment… a joint comes to mind, if that happens to be legal wherever you are - other substances have the same effect. Optologist have drops that will do that job as well.

    In the 1980 movie Breaking Glass with hazel O'Connor in one scene I think it's the last part of the movie two of her bandmates that are staying next to each other their eyes glow red and hers glows a little white on it so the movie Breaking Glass with hazel O'Connor check out that movie and you'll see they did the same thing with their eyes as well

      maybe… it is unlikely that Blade Runner is the first and only movie to utilise this effect. Blade Runner just made it iconic

    Curious what made you passionate about making movies and teaching about film itself?

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  2 года назад +1

      I guess watching and falling in love with movies… it is hard to pinpoint single events for any passion. For me, no film captured falling in love with cinema better than „cinema paradiso“ although that is more about the cinema as a social institution and what it means to people… for me it is more about the film itself and less about social aspects. I guess I am just not fond of people ;-)

    Thx for this vid, very helpful. Yesterday for my final in lighting class, I attempted to recreate the Rachel Meets Deckard scene with a model friend. I got everything but the eye reflection.Nice to know how to do it for later though.

      Pleasure Dan… Sorry that you got it to late… I heard they did the original lighting with just one light and a bounce (plus the glow light)… did you do it the same way?

    What overlay did you use?? It looks so clean yet you can see the atmo fog. I am very interested in how you did that. Thank you for sharing your work!

      The combination of foreground and background is just a changing blending modes and using feathered masks to blend elements of the real background onto the plate from blade runner… that is all. I can not explain it better than I do it in the AE part of in this video.

    About to have cataract surgery and a side affect of it is IOL flicking and being a Blade Runner fan, not a terrible thing to have. Not as cool, I know. But awesome to see how it was done with practical effects.
