Jeep Patriot: STUPID Reason to Change Alternator, BAD Design!

- In case changing the crankshaft position sensor wasn't punishment enough, I also had to change the alternator due to a failing pulley bearing. That's right, a pulley bearing. That's a thing, I guess. Wouldn't want that serpentine belt to break on a frozen Canadian winter day! Anyways, enjoy!

I feel bad for the "younger" generation. They will never have the experience of working on a car for fun when most jobs were easy compared to the nightmares they are today. 😣 Thanks Mr. SK, your aggravation's are an inspiration to us all!😆
Haha!! Oh, I do miss oil changes on my straight-six Mustang, or how I got good enough at pulling the 350 SBC out of my '70 Parisienne that it only took an hour. At least I have my ol' F100 to look forward to!
Brother, I’m doing this in an o’reileys parking lot in 20 degree weather, it sucks so much lol
Watching you go to all this work to get rid of a "chirp" tells me one thing... your radio is broken. Cheers and Happy Birthday
HAHAHAHHA... You must be a certified mechanic, Randahl.
Lol!! Too funny! Yeah the radio helps, but when you remote-start, and come out from work, where you're a mechanic, and it's chirping away like baby birds in a nest, well...it's not a good look haha!
@@ShopKatIndustries Ahhh yes...I get it now. 😁
Great video on these alternators, never had to deal with one,but cool to know their characteristics of how there designed🏆👍🏻😉
It is kind of interesting! Totally unnecessary...but interesting! I was a little bit relieved that the old alternator proved bad, as I ordered it on a bit of a leap of faith haha!
that world engine is one of the most reliable things they don't use anymore.
Right? It almost always seems to be transmission issues that send these to the scrapyard, but I have never had a serious engine issue, or even significant wear, in many miles of Patriot ownership/maintenance. This one is starting to use a little oil, but I think it's my fault. They extended to oil change interval to 16000km (I don't, I do 10000km) but it used so little oil that I got out of the habit of checking halfway, so I ran it pretty low between oil changes and now I need to add a litre at 5000km. Which still isn't bad and hopefully will halt the wearing!
@@ShopKatIndustries my 12 Avenger has the same engine and now has 215K miles and still going strong.
Nice work on the repair. Why do half the job and have to repeat it in a relatively short time. 2 birds with 1 stone. Wise words. Agree about doing the crappy/dirty jobs to avoid paying someone else a lot of money to do it for you. Real sense of accomplishment too. Thanks for sharing. Be safe and stay well.
Thank you Brian, you be well too!
Gotta love when everything is crammed in there like that. I wonder if you could just put a standard pulley on it so it doesn't do that in the future.
I've wondered that too! So unnecessary lol.
Job well done, made it look easy, thanks for sharing, all the best to you and your loved ones
Thank you Donald! I wouldn't call it easy, lol!
I done a few of them and you are right. It's a process but doable.👍
Wait til Saturday, I found one that's a lot worse lol!!
You are the man J.B. Keep doing what you do.
I appreciate that! Ya made me laugh!
I thought that look like it sucked 👀👎and you confirmed it! Great video very informative as usual! 👍😎👍
Haha, thanks Ken!
Happy birthday for yesterday
Thank you Patrick!
Had the same thing happen to my son's patriot, and my wife's patriot. $300 for a new alternator bc of a stupid squeek
Actually they sale those push pins on ebay. I bought a bunch because the jeep patriot I got was missing a bunch of them.
Thank you for this informational video! It helped me to replace my alternator today without too much fuss!
I'm so glad to hear that! I dropped by your channel and subscribed, your little trailer is just too cool. Cheers!
Love the kitties too!
@@campernut6183 I just had the best cat-nap lol
Thank you so much, your video was super informative, wished I watched this vid first. Did the spin test and the only one that felt remotely bad was the ac compressor. So 350 dollars later and still not fixed 😢 but at least everything is taken apart and ac system is dry so I can take compressor completely out to get to the alternator. Then put everything back together and vacuum and charge ac yay
Glad to help, and thanks for watching!! If it helps, I spent a lot of time and money chasing this same issue on my '08, replacing every idler and belt and tensioner multiple times before I learned about this unnecessary pulley bearing.
Hope you get your Jeep back on the road soon, cheers!
my jeep started to make this weird noise by the belt and it does seem to me the same noise(98Kmiles)
Could very well be the culprit, it's pretty common.
@@ShopKatIndustries i hope its that and not a waterpump
@@CRAZCHEVBOY for what it's worth, between myself and my mother-in-law, we've put a TON of miles on 4 different Patriots, and I've never had to do a water pump, knock on wood! (Now watch, mine will blow up on the way home from work tonight LMAO!)
@@ShopKatIndustries yep its the alternator, pull it out and it had brown powder on it from the bearings going bad and it was slightly wobbly, i put the mopar 140 amp alternator in it , was scared it wouldnt fit but it did, gg
@@CRAZCHEVBOY awesome! That brown powder is definitely a tell-tale!
Happy Belated Birthday! 🎉 cheers my friend 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Thank you, great video!: )
Thank you very much!
Solid video man, well done and nice detail on the steps!
Thank you very kindly!
Happy birthday, youngster!
I was going to say that I'm sorry for the next remarks but .. nope.. not sorry at all.
When you wrote "Jeep Patriot: Stupid Reason to...", you could have stopped after the word "Stupid". Patriot, Compass, Dodge Caliber.... stupid vehicles. I've had way too much experience with 3 of those "things". Each one made me say very many unkind things about the engineers that designed those pieces of s.. stuff.
BTW...Make sure you check your rear backing plates. They were out of stock everywhere for a while. They may even still be.
Your cats don't chew into you like mine does to me. I need a heavy glove on if I do that to mine.
Thanks Joe! Well, this is actually my second, I've been driving these silly things since late '07. My mother-in-law replaced her '10 with a '12 a couple years ago too, so I know them well. At this point it's "the Devil I know", and honestly they suit my needs so much better than anything else that I live with their numerous, ahem, "foibles" lol.
As for the cats? I would not try what I did there with Lauson, ha! He doesn't know how to pull his punches, typical Siamese lol. But Stratton especially is a little softie haha!
"foibles". Riiiggght. You are good at smoothing it over.
My cat is an indoor critter and the only good chance she has to wear down her claws is on me. ;)
@@Joe.Doucette lol! Foibles, idiosyncrasies, areas that could use modest improvements...on the other hand, unlike most of it's contemporaries it actually has semi-real 4x4, off-road chops, and cargo space!
Well here's the deal... as long as you like it and I don't have to work on it.. give 'er! :)
@@Joe.Doucette haha, DEAL! Lol! That said, when it dies for good, those new Mavericks actually look sort of interesting...
Man you really know how to celebrate a birthday eh.
Well, I actually did this last Monday, but if you mean celebrating by going to work until midnight and then editing until 2am, heck yeah I know how to party lol!
Was able to source those plastic clips on ali baba , was able to purchase 100 clips for a reasonable price.
Awesome!!
Good job I hate engineers that figure you have to “hide components that you would change more often like starters/alternators lol I love my old iron cause you could climb in and sit in fender well and work on it 😊😊
I know what you mean! No consideration given to repair at all, and it's getting worse.
Great vid my man. Thanks for making it. Hey it's looks like you have a FDII? I have a 2014 FDII with the CVT. So far front bearings and control arms, throttle body, A/C compressor, and now alternator. I'm just at 94K miles and have never really driven it in extreme stuff. What's your take on overall maintenance that's needed for the Pats?
Also, I live in southern Texas and wonder if the hotter climate is too rough on a FDII
Actually this one is an FD1, to which I've added the engine oil cooler and tow hooks. My previous Pat was an '08 FDII though. I definitely wouldn't say they're trouble-free vehicles, like a Honda or Toyota might be. On the flip side, they have better off-road chops than other comparable-sized compact SUVs, they're (mostly) simple to repair, and parts are cheap!
I do think hotter climes are harder on the CVTs. My mother-in-law put some 200000 easy miles on her '10 CVT with ZERO maintenance (my bad, really, whoops) before it started acting up. But of course, a hot day here is a cool day for you!
I have 105k on mine and replaced all the exact same stuff 😂😢
I have an 09 5-speed , only 106,000 miles on it though. I bought it new. The engine has been fine, no oil missing between changes, which I do twice a year, Mobil 1 5W20 EP. I’ve had to replace the ball joints, control, struts and tie rod ends recently, but I had heard long ago that the front suspension might do that eventually so I wasn’t surprised.
And…the alternator a few years back. But despite this stuff, I like it a lot and plan to keep it as long as I can.
Happy birthday to you and your daughter another problem solved with the jeep it's probably best to change the whole alternator
Thank you Larry, happy birthday to you too!
What?
“The push pins are hard to get???”.
Only at the dealership you said?
Go to Amazon and buy a kit with an assortment of them for $20!
I haven't seen one with the Mopar pins, which are different. I've tried some Christmas-tree types but they were too loose. Nevertheless, I shall look again! I also need an air filter housing screw. Still disappointed that they couldn't be bothered to respond to my inquiries. Cheers!
Jeep - "in order to replace alternator start by removing the AC compressor"
Me - "that's why I buy chevy"
Jeep- "also, we have the air compressor is attached with 6 bolts in hard to reach places"
Me - "there are only 3 bolts holding the engine to the frame and you got 6 on a AC compressor housing?"
Also Chevy: "Metal ball joints are just too strong, what else could we make them out of?" *contemplates cheese sandwich* *EYES LIGHT UP*
Haha! I've put it this way before: ALL cars suck. But dammit I love them anyway, lmao! Cheers!
The spray wax I keep touting at the self serve car wash stops that green death you found on the alternator connectors, and all the other connectors you manage to hit with the spray, plus to some extent it might get in and supplement the old lube in pulley ratchets and bearings; though when not too hard to reach, I like to lube that stuff with a drip bottle of silicone tire shine with graphite lock lube in it. Might have been too late to lube that ratchet, I'm not sure.
Also, if they really can't stand a few clunky noises, maybe they should trade their cushy Chrysler Jeeps in for 1943 Willy's army surplus types. I mean, what kind of Jeep drivers are these?
Anyway, I do see the point of not wanting to remove the AC pump just to drip in some silicone graphite lube.
It's all pretty sealed up anyway, you'd have to wreck the seals to get access. I can recall early Patriots getting slammed because their interior was "plasticky". Which is critical-auto-journalist-speak for "easy to clean", as Jeeps should be!
@@ShopKatIndustries If air got in to dry out the original lube, then spray wax has a chance of getting in the same way.
@@alan6832 true enough!
3:32 I think it's actually a 16mm.
You're probably right!
is your name Ferrel
Well, sort of, David...those coveralls came from a former employer, and they spelled my name wrong...it's actually Farrel! But I'm not fussy, and if folks are in the ballpark I'm good lol. I've been called worse!
that is the same tool I use for push pins even though I have a pin kit that came with the proper tool
I think engineers need to work on the things they build, and then maybe they will do a better job engineering things. Well done on the work, brother. The alternator on the 08 expedition is easy, but the starter made we question Ford's engineers, frickin yahoo's. Lol 😆.
Haha! Oh boy, the stories I have from working with engineers on the LAV programs...some are excellent and really try, but other factors can seriously screw everything up. And some engineers really don't try!
Bad job that’s good for piece of mind!
Really don't need the intro nor to watch you play with your cats.
Well, I watched your only video and couldn't tell what the hell I was watching, so I really don't need your negative feedback, yet here we are. But thanks for watching & commenting; still counts!
Aww muffin
Really don't need you, period. Get bent.
Good video. Did alternator work recently to my own Patriot. S U C K S.
Thanks! Your comment made me laugh out loud! In that "Oh man I feel your pain too" kinda way. Cheers!
accessory bearings and water pumps and factory brakes will all start to fail around the 200,000 km mark.
I did my brakes long ago (I drive hard!) and the belt kit a little while ago. Never done a Pat water pump! My mother-in-law's '10 had near 300,000 on trade-in on original water pump. Nevertheless...I relish a challenge, lol!!
Ebay has all those plastic rivets and push pins.
They do, and Amazon as well, but the prices weren't great. As it happened, I popped in to Princess Auto one day, and lo and behold they had an amazing kit for dirt cheap!

i have this car... I changed my alternator twice on last 5 years.. this car is disposible
Well, I guess I know where you're coming from, but...a large part of this channel is encouraging people to repair instead of dispose, as our consumer economy encourages us to always throw things out because "they aren't worth fixing", then hypocritically says "Reduce Reuse Recycle!"
I've been driving Patriots for 15 years, and my mother-in-law has for 12. I've changed two alternators in that time, on 4 different Pats. I would find it hard to "dispose" of a vehicle over an alternator, especially one used on SO MANY other vehicles. Really the reason behind this video was to show that an alternator is a DIY job, which saves labour costs, as most Patriot/Compass jobs indeed are. And parts tend to be inexpensive, especially in the aftermarket.
May I ask, did you change the alternator yourself, use an independent shop, or the stealership? And did you use a jobber part, or OEM?
I certainly feel that, despite it's shortcomings, at the time there was nothing on the market that could match the Patriot's combo of reasonable purchase price, inexpensive repair costs, excellent cargo volume, and very capable 4WD system. I really don't know what I'll replace it with when it finally dies...probably something antique!
Cheers, and thanks for watching!
