  • We almost didn't make this video, because the tiny village of Llangrannog in west Wales is an absolute delight. Stunning scenery, great food and some fascinating history - including the legendary Cranogwen - a feminist before her time.

I went to Yr urdd back in the later end of the 70's. Loved the whole experience, even swimming in the pool that had no heating next to the stable block. Oh and going for a bike ride, we got half way down the little lane from the camp down to the village when a hail storm began. Our instructor told us to go back cos the hail was the size of hazelnuts and the girls starting crying with the pain of being hit with them. So many more very fond memories of a 5 day stay at the camp. I've been back several times since the last being 30 years ago. Will go back sometime, if I can organise time to do the area justice.

Lovely little town and wonderful beaches - we used to like the one you pointed out that you can access at low tide. Excellent video Miss Hubnut - full of interesting info delivered with clarity and passion!
Interesting that moves to preserve the Welsh language were happening so long ago - in the 70's my family holidayed in Wales, staying regularly at a farm in Llandeilo Graban (near Erwood, less neer to Builth Wells) - the farmer didn't speak any Welsh (despite having been born on the farm), yet his sons (now in there mid-fifties to late 40s) were learning Welsh at school.
Amazing how close the world came to Welsh dieing out!
My wife learned some Welsh when studying in Aberystwyth (and tried to teach me - the only thing I can remember is Tan Sam (Fireman Sam) as we watched some episodes on S4C in the early 90s!). She loved the alphabet so much she wanted to call our daughter Guinevere, but with the Welsh spelling Gwynhfyr - it looks so much prettier when written down!
May I be so bold as to hazard a guess that Carly is not spelt in English?

Just found this video some 9 months late. Great production. Llangrannog is great… in Winter when the tourists go home. The very narrow road down to the Pentre is a nightmare at peak traffic times as it has few passing places. The other issue is that it is mostly holiday homes, or at least used to be. Fairly sure that at one time this was a smugglers cove. Wasn’t Twm Sion Cati here or a very near cove?

Well done Miss HN, I too think Llangrannog is the No1 place to visit. I first went there in 1989 and returned so many times either camping or staying in the cottage that was owned by The Ship Inn, simply fell in love. We would go every January to enjoy a New Year break, I loved this village as much in the Winter as I did in the Summer I am ashamed to say that we did not know the story of Cranogwen, and that we haven't be back for 25 years !. Maybe Jan 24 we will meet up with a very old friend.

Thanks for another enjoyable video, we visited here in early May and its a lovely place, great food in Pentre, Caffi Patio and the pizza restaurant was fantastic. Its better to park at the top and walk down if you can, bus was not running when we were there. Its ok if able bodied and there are a few routes, just keep going down. A warning about the car park at the bottom, one evening we parked and the pay machine was out of action so could not use coins, there is no internet signal with some carriers and also no phone signal in the village. The wifi provided for the machine was so slow we were not able to use it so had to go into the pub to use theirs and by that time the ten minutes allowed to pay had expired and when we returned home had a bill for £100 as they use ANPR on entry. There are lots of complaints about this on line so if you are unable to pay on arrival leave the car park, I understand some local people are just as unhappy about this as visitors. Please keep making these videos when you can and have the time, we always look forward to the next one.

Thank you for your very informative video .I had never heard of Sarah Jane Rees (Cranogwen). Women definitely had it harder in those days, so that makes her life even more remarkable.
I have never understood why women are often valued less than me or deemed less intelligent and women like Cranogwen go to show that there is absolutely no reason for men not to see them as equals.

I gotta admit, the Welsh language is very interesting. like most other Welsh words and names in English, Llangrannog looks nothing like how it is spelled to me (an English speaker). We Americans don't seem to be able to pronounce Welsh names correctly. My mother was raised in a place called Cumru Township in the US state of Pennsylvania. This was named this due to a lot of folks back in the day being Welsh. It was named after the Welsh name for Wales (Cymru) but in true American fashion it was Americanized and called Cumru (Pronounced koom-roo) Township instead of Cymru (Cam-Ri ) Township. Oh well. The USA and UK, two countries divided by a common language.

Haven't been for a while didn't know about the pizza place, sounds like a good reason to visit again soon. 😋

Looks amazing. Just wanted to ask if there is part of the beach for dogs? Thanks as ever for your fantastic videos. We hope to move closer to the coast at some point in the future 😀.

Also are you going to do a video on the legend of the giant Sea snail at Cwmtydu? If you don't already know it ask the guy in the coffee shop there.

Are there really Welsh people who cannot read English? That sounds quite fantastic. (Mind you, I think languages that are under the threat of being overwhelmed by dominant national languages are well worth protecting, and so I wholeheartedly support the gentleman’s effort to have a bilingual sign for the parking lot, although it would not be of much use to myself.)

There are still very much first language Welsh people. Inland from us towards Tregaron they tend to be and also on the Lleyn Peninsula. I'm sure there are other pockets. Still a living language ❤

@@misshubnut Thank you! I have been aware of Welsh being alive, I just wondered if anyone who needed a parking ticket would have been able to get into this situation without at least an elementary grasp of the English language.
My comparison is Sardinia, where there are quite a number of first-language Sardinian speakers. However, schools, administration, media, institutions and public services will invariably use Italian. (And Sardinian is of course not as unitary and codified as Welsh, with a certain lexical and phonetic variation between the spoken language of different areas, and with localities speaking Catalan or Ligurian dialect, for historical reasons).

There can’t be many people around who exclusively speak Welsh nowadays.
