Hi terireddingsutton, that's a good question. There wasn't a particular reason for calling it a straw. Some people may use a straw to drink hot cocoa or not, but the object can just be a peppermint stick. I thought straw would be easier than saying "peppermint stick." But it's really whatever you'd like for it to be. I hope I have answered your question. 😊
