  • From 1942 to 1955, Aikido Founder Morihei Ueshiba spent most of his time in his country home with attached dojo in Iwama, Ibaragi Preference. During and immediately after the war, he had for the first time in years the opportunity to devote himself to personal training and meditation. It was in this isolated village, far from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo, that Morihei formulated the concept of "Takemusu Aiki." This was an expression an ideal of the highest level of aikido where techniques perfectly suited to the situation are born spontaneously. In these highlights from films from this era, you will see the Founder's aikido at its finest.

    I have once again been humbled. I only recently had an awakening to the concept that the practice of Aikido is very much about the "Relationship" Between Nage and Uke. This seemed a very ground-shaking message that I have preached eagerly, and have seen it improve my Aikido and the Aikido of those with which I train.
    ...And then I looked up "Takemusu" to find that, of course, O'Sensei was way, way ahead of me. 20 years into training, I'm ready to begin my study of Takemusu Aikido.

    This is what is so astounding about Aikido for me, that O'sensei created a martial art that promotes peace and non-violence, it seems like a contradiction in terms and thats why so many people just dont get it. For 99% of guys who practice all the other martial arts, its all about competition, individualism, self-preservation and violence. Name another martial art in this world that promotes love and respect as Aikido does you wont find one.

      I almost fully agree with you, but...Have a look at Tetsudo (Tibetan form) which aims at improving oneself, not only to become physically fit, but rather to become a fully rounded personality. "Eveything in life exists in a state of duality. You cannot have light without darkness, a left without a right, an high without a low...You cannot become truly powerful until you have learnt to be truly gentle" - Master Tambo Tetsura.

    Its not that its fake, its just that at times it shouldn't work based on wrong timing or improper grip from the attacker in terms of the technique being shown. The case you have mentioned is most likely one of those techniques that kinda didnt go quite right at the time, but the fundamental idea still holds integrity. I wouldnt judge a martial art without first giving it a shot on the mats, its like saying you dont like eating something when you havent even tasted the food yet.

    the role of Aiki is to banish conflict? What does that mean? It means one force is never met with an opposable force - the principle if ying and yang. Aikido is not about fighting but developing this concept of opposable forces - ying and yang. When people say "Aikido could never win in a real fight!" they reveal their ignorance and should go back to punching and kicking each other in the head for sport as you will never be enlightened to what is so enriching in the Universe.

      Matthew M Yin & yang are polar opposites; hot/cold, soft/hard etc. Ch'i simply means "energy" (of which there's many forms). How is any of that "bullshit"? Consider this: Karate schools hand out black belts in average of four years. That art is primarily about physics. In Chinese soft internal energetic arts, in which one is barely scratching the surface in four years, they don't need to keep striking makiwaras and do knuckle pushups or whatever to develop huge callous and toughen the hand. They don't need to. They use energy, and can break stone by merely touching it. They can do so with without the golf-ball knuckles. My sifu demonstrates energy by having two students push a sharp steel head spear into the hollow above the chest, at the base of the windpipe. No muscle can grow there, no callous. It's thin skin with delicate windpipe under it. The wooden spear shaft bends then snaps. The point doesn't penetrate. He can have a bat broken over the same spot. Takes work though. Hard work (which incidentally translates to "K'ung-fu".. Which is why you see far more Karate schools in American cities than the soft/internal ones, because the overwhelming majority of Americans don't have the patience and dedication required.

    • @thiagomassara
      @thiagomassara 7 лет назад +2

      +Matthew M I think you almost got it right. It is definitely not fighting, as it is closer to Tai Chi Chuan than Kung Fu for instance. In fact, in Aikido there's probably more emphasis on falling than hitting someone - and trust me, letting yourself be thrown without effort on the other part is not easy! It's the art of harmony, it does, for instance, fit with Bruce Lee's philosophy in the sense that you learn Aikido in order to express yourself through your body. Of course you can express anger, or whatever it is with the principles of other marcial arts , but Aikido means expressing harmony, therefore as you make your move you are feeling the other and as he falls he is feeling you, there's no difference between the two, there's no effort at all. That's why you see these pictures and you think it's funny - if they were all beginners you would see someone punch the old man in the face, and also the old man grabbing someone and applying enough pressure to hurt - but when it comes to experienced practitioners, it is not about effectiveness or damage, it is just about letting go and flowing, it is supposed to be "play along" but with intention and emotion - and understand that some people can't do that! My Sensei said on my first lesson - "If you ever get into a fight you are not learning Aikido properly". And by the way, I'm no black belt, I've only been to a couple of lessons and let me tell you - it is nothing like when I used to train boxing. Before, I would run into a smelly gym, with people all stressed out wanting to vent whatever frustration they have on you, hurt myself and learn nothing about respect, there was no confidence but only cockyness - now, I get to the dojo at 5:40 am, everybody is chilling, smiling and quiet, they all say hi to each other and shake hands, every body is teaching everybody something, and when we leave we have more energy than before. Aikido is peace brother, not war.

    Why is it so hard for people to believe in a martial art they have never experienced. There is nothing magical about aikido. It is timing and accuracy. It is knowing what angle to use to counter the attackers motion. When viewed as such, is it so difficult to believe. This video isn't showing "if attacked like this, do this"... it simply shows one possible reaction to one possible action. As one who has studied several martial arts I can say that I've learned to do things I wouldn't have thought possible. For example, pressure point manipulation learned in Kuk Sool Won.

      @Vui Programmer it is effective against somebody who don't know how to fight. Even most basic boxing skills will be very effective against those who don't know how to fight.
      But in higher level of combat or in elite level of combat sport, somebody can't rely on just one particular discipline. There is more complex things not just swinging wildly and give your opponent wide opening.

    Even as an Aikidoka, my first question about an interaction on the mat is "does it work?" And, by that question I mean, "If this had been a real, defensive situation, would you still be alive?"
    If the answer is yes, then the deeper mysteries of Aikido can be considered. If the answer is no, then what you practice may be a means to living a happier life but it is not a martial art and should not be advertised as such.
    Teach that your students may survive to become old and wise.

    • @soggyrice02
      @soggyrice02 2 года назад +2

      This can be applied to all arts. Everything has an aspect that can work and such can also meet limitations. The real filter is the student’s own purpose. If your looking for what works in a “defensive” situation my question is how did you find yourself in that situation in the first place? The survival mindset creates a survival reality. IMHO a knife and gun wielded by disciplined training and violent intentions will fall most attacks and negate the context of defense by many arts. Some say the highest martial art principle is to win without fighting, how efficient would survival be if one never has to exercise defense at all? But most unhealthy egos do look for a fight, are ignorant of pre-event signals or are insecure enough to be taunted. In a violent encounters within a modern civilized society nobody comes out unscathed, attacker or defender, whether by law or by limb - no winners in a fight. So what works? The problem is not the art, it is the student, or worse the teacher. Seek to survive and your path will repeatedly bring you to fend for your life, seek to defend and you will encounter offense, seek peace…..maybe one will find that. The sword remains sheathed, the gun remains holstered, no widow no fatherless child. The full circle of war is peace, but a long journey it is.

    also this is it in real time, ruclips.net/video/wSgiKehbIW8/видео.html.
    Morihei Ueshiba in his prime was untouchable, he had mastered his physical movements by mastering his mental. Sure at this point he's very old and his students are not very well trained or masters of anything so they may be going easy or may just not be a challenge for him, but you have to think he was very old he ended up dying of cancer. I read 2 men would have to carry him to the mats and once he got to the mats he would become very alert and still was nearly untouchable. Read up on him there are many accounts of essentially miracles he performed, dodging bullets, several police men he was training or demonstrating to one day said they all piled up on him he was soft as silk and then all of a sudden he flung them all off they said he became like stone in an instant.

    BASIC SELF DEFENSE RITES (24/7 maintained is a good plan to ensure reflex reactions are sure)
    1) AIKIDO STANCE / AIKIDO WALK with evasive movements at interactive times. Dancing almost. To quickly swivel and move off to the side, in respect of the person before you, or the elderly person whom you suddenly almost bump into, so your AIKIDO movements 24/7 achieve a better ongoing boundary at all times. Inside, out side, seems like you can get punched in the face going inside too much in AIKIDO if you aren’t a master of physical movements and grabs, etc... Circular, circular, over and over is truest AIKIDO in the take down pin. That has been getting lazy and straight lined instead of spin, spin, over and over in the take down pin and redirecting grabs represented in AIKIDO so common.
    2) SITUATIONAL AWARENESS for 2 year olds onwards, what a difficult reality to be born into Creation’s Expanse. So many SITUATIONAL AWARENESS points of awareness to teach.
    3) RECREATIONAL SELF DEFENSE
    4) EDUCATIONAL SELF DEFENSE
    5) MUSICAL & COMMUNICATED SELF DEFENSE
    6) TAKEN OVER NATURAL COMMAND OF THE WORLD in 1 weekend of exposing my tragedy and overwhelming COINCIDENCES of such SUPERNATURAL promise with the suffer of LOTUS type unawareness some of the time I developed out of these tough conditions.
    6) OPEN DOORS with your FINGER TIPS always.
    7) RUN AROUND AND WALK AROUND LAKES that are the size of METEOR IMPACTS from tens of thousands of years ago. That belt between MARS & JUPITER is a safeguard & ideologically focuses us to send machines to protect and utilize that somehow, some not so far away time from now. SELF DEFENSE by having oversight somehow and redirecting from EUGENICS DECEPTIONS and 3 needless ARMAGEDDONS, instead we walk around a lake if we want to and see the size of an impact crater from a Meteor, this was a concept I had, similar to rites at MECCA is how I cherished this when I realized I was running 11km around a local lake like anyone could to visualize the importance of SELF DEFENSE & MECCA SAFETY ZONE & UNHR Dvine Natural Laws we know as instictive expecations to thrive and therefore Divine Law. Thi s is what just sort of happened to me, I realized this RITE of SELF DEFENSE to redirect GLOBAL CONFLICT towards managing space without forcing anyone aboard. Maybe stay on EARTH is the best path as I was reminded over and over as a child and youth with repetitive dreams of this KEY IMPORTANT FACT, STAY ON EARTH!!!!!!!!!!!
    8) JEETKUNDO is also SUFISM/200BC JUDAISM in philosophy, DISCHORDIANISM practices by a CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGIST amateur even like me, you can change the world so easily, everyone is meant to lead. The disabled are reminders of trust, hope, inspiration, all are disabled in the world in some way or another it sure seems to me. Ego will be renamed and reshaped by some one to fit whatever needing claim over and over, twisting of context, and wasted time, time a wasted.

Why kick you when I can hold you hostage by your over extended should and wrist? You don't have to do irreparable damage but you can if necessary to escape. It's a battle of wits more than strength.

    You cant judge Aikido because Aikido doesn't have any form, there is no comparison because there is no separation. The moment you conceptualise Aikido is when you create a divide between yourself and Aikido/others. The true understanding of Aikido is when you realise that Aikido is unification and equality. You cant have these qualities if you go around competing and judging.

Do you honestly think out of all the people who train aikido that none of them have tested it? Stuff on RUclips is for show mostly. Find some good ones by TAKN. It is not floaty fancy crap like ppl believe. It is martial and very effective when trained properly.

    I have already practiced aikido and I know that this level of form will not be reached today. In addition, an aikido practitioner cannot fight if he only practices aikido, as he has no idea what it means to be kicked or punched in real combat.

    Aikido works until the practitioner gets punched in the face by a boxer or kicked to the head by a Muay Thai practitioner. Aikido may also work until the practitioner is taken down by a wrestler and ground-and-pounded or submitted by someone who knows BJJ.

    If the purpose is to avoid conflict why not learn and practice how to run to the opposite direction of the attackers. It is certainly easier to master than wristlock flip several dudes simultaneously in diffrent directions

    These are just show motion demonstrations people. This isn't the actual form during a fight. Get real. I know everyone likes to make fun of all martial arts and ride the Gracie Jiu Jitsu dick train, but there are other forms out there that will work just fine against 95 percent of the population. And this technique is one that instead of attaching you are constantly defending and basically redirecting the attackers OWN force and trajectory to turn it around on him and use his own body weight against him by grabbing and applying pressure on joints that make him submit, fall, it be forced to break a joint or a bone. Just because it seems silly in a demo doesn't mean it doesn't work. This is just to show you the idea of it. Much like Judo that is similar in reversing the attackers again and strength against him instead of exerting your strength on him. You use his energy and redirect the energy around you. Everyone internet black belt is on this videos disrespecting other people's martial art just because they watched 2 or 3 episodes of the UFC and just because they learned the words ArmBar and Rear Naked Choke now they're all professionals. Gtfoh and die respect to something that would hurt badly about 95 percent of you out there.

    1:35 So the aim of aiki is to banish fighting. That means aikido was never meant for self defense in the first place. People who practice it for self defense are delusional.

      Mouldy CPU the only way you can banish fighting is to defend against it with your ukey in mind

    • @thiagomassara
      @thiagomassara 7 лет назад

      Right on - if you really practice Aikido you don't get into fights... you express harmony, period. It doesn't mean it can't be called self-defense - what does it mean anyway? To always be as safe as possible (Aikido) or in case you get yourself into an awfully difficult situation you are able to hurt at least one person really bad (JiuJitsu, Boxing...)? Plus, how can ANY martial art be effective today when anyone have access to a gun? I would dare to say Aikido is the best self-defense because you wouldn't get into a fight in the first place...

      This is not actually true. There are records and testimonials of Ueshiba being a bully in his younger days. Problem is, he created Aikido when he was older and soft, and thus the art of Aikido lacks real combat efficacy, being more of a healthy and spiritual activity like Yoga or Tai Chi.
