Interesting that this showed up in my RUclips feed... we are scheduled to cruise on the Royal Princess in May 2018. I wonder how the internet knows....duh. No privacy anywhere! Anyway, it's nice to know it's "fresh" after the drydock.

I've always wondered about repainting the hull during dry dock. Is any effort made to paint the surface of the keel that rests on the blocks at the bottom of the dry dock? It seems that every dry dock video I watch the ship comes to rest on these massive blocks at the bottom of the dry dock once the water is pumped out. Then the hull is cleaned, painted and refinished. What about the part of the ship that rests on these blocks? Do they move these blocks individually to paint the covered spot or does this bit of keel not get painted? Always wondered.
Hi Steven, thanks for watching. That is a very good question. Those blocks are strategically placed based on each ships hull design. Moving them around does not seem like an easy task, nor time efficient. We will continue to look for an answer on this.
Hi there, the position of the blocks is recorded and then fractionally changed between each docking so no same section of the hull is ever on the blocks two dockings in a row. Over the years the entire hull is given careful attention and special block layouts prepared should certain frames and sections of the keel need to be accessed.

Hallo Chris Cardona. Are you any relation to Paul David Cardona, the Marine and Yacht Surveyor and Consultant, Engineering Inspector and Consultant in Malta ? It seems that your origin began somewhere near our island or Italy perhaps.
That is a big ship to take care of. Beautiful propellers and the minimal support for them. I also like the shafting system and the hydrovanes while the thrusters seem to be meaningful in any wind situation.
And what do the employees do while the Dry Dock is being carried out?

Hi William, thanks for watching. The daily cost to dry dock a ship can be astronomical, that is why they plan everything to maximize time usage and get work done in as few days as possible.
Ok what were they welding on the bow while the projector was putting up the stencil ????
Hi Chris, thanks for watching. Looks as though they were using spot welding to mark the outline of the stencil where the new overlay was going to be applied.
why would a 3-year-old ship require such an extensive rejuvenation?
Hi Steven, thanks for watching. You are correct, normally new cruise ships do not require such extensive dry docks within their first 5 years. The Royal Princess was taken out of service to install the required technology for the Ocean Medallion program, and at the same time correct the midship staircase issues and apply the new livery design.
COOL, I never thought about that. Um, do you know much about RCL VOOM internet onboard their ships?
Hi Steven, the Voom on Royal has two options. Surf is good enough for general web surfing, email and social media.The Surf + Stream will give you enough bandwidth to access to tools like FaceTime and services like Netflix or Amazing Video. The video quality will be good, but not a full HD stream, at least not for prolonged periods. Probably should have asked what was your question about Voom. Feel free to ask if you need more details.
