The Real Reason Why I Am Not Racing At Hot Rod Drag Week 2023!

  • First off, I need to correct an error I made while filming this video. I spaced and forgot to mention that Jake Sanders and his friends were a huge part of rebuilding the Hemi during drag week 2022. I said Tony Angelo and I rebuilt the Hemi and even though there's a clip of Jake wrenching on the engine, I want to make sure he's he gets the credit for saving our bacon during DW 2022. So, if you're near Brownsburg, Indiana and need a Hemi fixed, Jake's Snake Performance is the spot!
Anyway, this is Episode 261 of Mike Finnegan's Garage and this time we venture out of the garage in Georgia and head to Race City USA aka Mooresville, North Carolina. It's the home of Harrell Engine and Dyno, the spot we've spent countless hours trying to tune more power into the 528ci Chrysler Hemi of Blasphemi. After several chassis dyno sessions we decided to take the Hemi apart to assess the condition of the rotating assembly and address two issues that we knew ahead of time that needed fixing. This video will show you exactly what's going on with our engine and why we are not racing Hot Rod Drag Week 2023.

You're going through the same thing we used to experience with the Fuel cars in the era where we were using similar parts. Different fuel, different injection system, but very similar distribution issues. In our case, #6 was always a problem cylinder because #3 and #5 would steal fuel from across the plenum. At the same time, we had the blower pushing air to the front cylinders and liquid in the plenum running to the back cylinders. This is not exact, but from memory, our port nozzle stagger looked like this:

Every time I watch a video that Pete is in. When he starts talking about engines. I learn something. And I have been doing this for 32 years, and I hope I never stop learning.

  • @mikebrown8065

"Any motor that's a little bit blowed up, is about to be a lot blowed up!"

  • @billmegnin9288

Love how Pete explains everything. Throw back to the old timer engine men.

  • @toddsmith4015

Love Petes way of explaining things... one of my favorite guests on your channel

  • @junktionfet

Wow those piston forensics at the end were outstanding. Learned a lot, really glad you got this filmed and posted

  • @martlovestv

It's not getting rebuilt in a parking lot? Man, you have really hit the big time now! Keep her coming guys.

The idea of tuning each cylinder has been around a long time. I heard it from Larry Widmer a couple of decades ago. From him i started having big block chevy camshafts ground according to if they were a long or short intake runner or how far they were from the water inlet. Made a world of difference thinking about engines that way.

  • @berky1976

Glad you caught it before the big bang. Money saved is money earned. 🙂

  • @BIllMcCambridge

Outstanding video Mike. Well done. Pete is a wise man and please let him know we all appreciate him sharing his talents and wisdom.

  • @LloydBrawn

If anyone is wondering, the strobe effect we see in the camera is because the camera shutter speed and shop lights are almost nearly synchronized with their on/off cycles. LED lights blink at nearly 60Hz, and camera shutter speed is about the same.

  • @reddcocker64

Fascinating. I am forever amazed at the technical knowledge that modern engine builders and tuners have.

  • @zoopercoolguy

There's another t-shirt idea right at the end of the video. "Finnegan blew up Blasphemi again, so I bought this shirt."

  • @kevinnobody3052

Damn I love this technical shit.

  • @jeffmckc29

You cannot tune out a Mechanical issue with a Laptop. Its a great lesson just that simple.

Great video. I love watching Pete explain what is happening. It was a good decision not going to drag week, I hate seeing ya blow an engine again. Take the time and do it the right way.

  • @kengilbertson1004

Pete and yourself go above and beyond to share knowledge and make it understandable for a large percentage of people. Kudos to both of you for all you guys do.

  • @matthewdye6502

I really like these 20-30 minute videos. Keep up the good work Sir.

  • @robh4822

You should have a blasphemi engine count shirt. Everytime it come apart = new shirt with updated number.

  • @gulfflier4700

Mike I appreciate all the content! I'm living vicariously through you as I finish up my career in aviation. When Im on the road in India or South Africa or some other spot I watch a FInnegan's Garage vid and I am feeling the burn to get back and mess with my stuff. Thanks again Mike!
