The thing with Herlock Sholmes is that it's actually a reference in and of itself. Maurice LeBlance, the writer of the Arsene Lupin stories, had the famous character infamously face off against Holmes. Except Doyle got involved, and as a result, LeBlanc renamed Holmes and Watson to Sholmes and Wilson for his stories.
They were set in "California" but DGS takes place in Japan and England. The Doyle Estate thing required literally just changing one letter and given it's ace attorney, of course they went all out.
I love these episodes (haven't seen this yet) But the talks y'all have during this as it doesn't require all of y'alls attention are wonderful as You can talk about things other than the game and we get the hint of stumped life outside of RUclips. It's nice to see the people and hear the people that inspire others talk about their lives.
Bones and Grey's Anatomy are pretty dang different. Bones is like procedural detective shows, except they do more forensics. Grey's Anatomy is a modern ER.
His name is actually Sherlock Holmes, but only in Japan, because of the stupid copyright issues globally. He’s the main character. The game is also based on “Victorian Japan”, so that’s cool Also, congrats on 50
It's all due to a handful of Sherlock Holmes stories that are still under copyright protection for another two to six years that show Sherlock exhibiting genuine human emotions (they're the only books that do so). Those books are also why the filmmakers behind Enola Holmes were threatened a lawsuit by the Conan Doyle estate.
Fun fact: The Great Ace Attorney games aren't the only form of media that use "Herlock Sholmes" as a work around the copyright. There's a Maurice Leblanc novel that features Arsene Lupin going up against Sherlock Holmes, but Leblanc was forced to change Holmes' name to Herlock Sholmes for reprints.
Saw a video about this recently, and yeah, while Sherlock isn't quite out of copyright in the USA (thanks mouse), Herlock Sholmes is. Thus why Capcom uses Herlock as a character and gets to say, oh no, we're not ripping off Sherlock, this is a completely different character with a different original author.
@@Erthshade Yeah. While it may seem arbitrary as to why they went with "Herlock Sholmes," there's a plausible reason for why they chose the name for the Western release.

"Herlock Sholmes makes no sense" Neither does Sherlock Holmes, if you think about it. Those aren't standard names.
Isnt Herlock Sholmes the name that the writer of the Arsan stories used after Doyle told him he couldn’t use Sherlock Holmes in his stories?
Yep. You can thank LeBlanc for creating Herlock Sholmes to be his rival to Arsene Lupin.
thank you persona 5

I used to play this with my friend and a joke that stuck with us was "spacebook"
I mean, they had a character who's name was the Latin name for white oak, and a girl named Lolly Pop who had ring pop engagement ring.
You sound so surprised. Like you never would have heard of Del Belphine before. I mean come on guys. Surprised smiley face
