Eddie Jones DUNKS! (NPZ/nonplayerzealot)

  • This is a revised and final version of an older vid of mine, including some important clips I didn't have the first time around. These DUNKS! range from 94-97 (Eddie's first 3 seasons). As you can clearly see, Eddie was an underrated in-game dunker. There have been players who could dunk real fancy that couldn't convert some of these. He had nice hang time and decent sized hands. Some of these I can't even picture Kobe completing (the Bucks dunk at the end for certain).

    After the showtime Lakers came to an end there was a huge drought in Laker land. Finally Elden Campbell and Nick Van Excel brought some hope to Inglewood. Then came Eddie Jones and The Lake show was born. Eddie was so special to all us Laker fans we really had a bond with him and Nick. When they were both traded it was a dark day for Lakers fans. Alot us never got over the Eddie Jones trade.

    Before there was Kobe, there was this kid named Eddie Jones. I'm still not over West trading him for Rice. Eddie should have a ring... if not 3.

    • @MusicManSeanB
      @MusicManSeanB 4 года назад +17

      Unfortunately, neither Jones or Kobe were big enough to handle playing the 3 on defense at that time. Plus, as superior as an athlete Jones was, Rice was a far better shooter to stretch the defenses from collapsing on Shaq. It was an unfortunate but necessary evil.

    • @loganromero5089
      @loganromero5089 4 года назад +14

      That was not the reason, Jerry West wanted Kobe to start so he had to trade Eddie Jones.

    • @MusicManSeanB
      @MusicManSeanB 4 года назад +11

      Kobe was going to eventually start, but still neither could play the 3, at least defensively. Thus you had to make that trade. Plus again, Rice was a threat and proven shooter that from the perimeter, put fear in opponents.

    • @MusicManSeanB
      @MusicManSeanB 4 года назад +11

      @@loganromero5089 plus another thing to remember: Phil Jackson was taking over as coach. 2 things he valued especially in his triangle offense....permineter shooters (i.e. John Paxson, B.J. Armstrong, Criag Hodges, Bobby Hansen, Steve Kerr with the Bulls, Rice, Robert Horry, Brian Shaw, Devan George, Trevor Ariza, and later Derek Fisher when his perimeter shot finally developed), and 3s that were either long, thick, or both, on defense who could also in a pinch play some 4 if and when he went small ball (Rick Fox, Ron Artest, Rice, George, along with Horry and later on, Lamar Odom, who could play anywhere on the court.) I loved Jones, but he was too light to handle most defensive assignments at the 3, and Kobe still was building his body up to endure such pounding. The Portland series was a prime example of such, when both Steve Smith, and Bonzi Wells, took Kobe down to the post, and were getting buckets. The Lakers eventually overcame that series, but Kobe started hitting the weight room much harder after that. Jones wouldn't have fared any better, since theoretically he plays the same position as Kobe at the 2.

    Eddie Jones was a fan favorite for those late 90's Laker teams. He had a rather unique career, or rather he had very unique circumstances happen in his career. He was traded from the Lakers because of the emergence of Kobe and traded from the Heat as Dwayne Wade was becoming a star. Both of those teams ended up winning championships after he left. Eddie was a REALLY good player but unfortunately he had to leave so that 2 young guys who played the same position that he did could develop into the all-time greats that they eventually became at that position.

Eddie was and is still a Laker fan fave and I have a lot of his footage still. Jerry West was very proud of that Eddie pick, he would glow when talking about him. McKie went to Porty iirc. I'm from SoCal so I rooted for UCLA who won the title in 1995, which was great (remember watching that at my dorm), but I also kept loose tabs on Michigan Fab 5 in those years, I know I saw some of a match with Temple and that game is online. Eddie is probably the last memorable player from Temple and that was 25 yrs ago. Philly loved him, tho, that's for sure. They were agog at The Spectrum when he dunked twice on Bradley. Still can't believe he went 2nd. He was 7'6", but a beanpole and unathletic and somewhat skilled. Compare that to Penny or Webber. Still a headscratcher for THAT Philly team that was so devoid of talent post-Chuck. Dunno if you're a Sixers fan, but that's quite a team there. They won The Process. Lakers had to dump almost all of their picks in those years. They're lucky if they can re-ink AD.

Vlade was in his prime, Cedric was an All Star, Eldon Campbell was great about every third game, and a lot of people forget that we had four very good guards with EJ, Nicky, Sedale Threatt, and Anthony Peeler.
    But Nicky and EJ just embodied that era in such a glorious and exciting way. Nick gave you everything he had and he had guts and heart galore, while Eddie was just pure athleticism personified. Every time he jumped the potential for something you’d never seen before came alive. We weren’t expected to do much but we went 48-34, kicked the crap out of a powerful Sonic team and then scared the shit out of a very good Spurs team in the playoffs. God I loved that season.

    My most favorite Eddie plays were that near free throw dunk against the Bucks and a crazy layup he did in April 97 where he took off too far away near the 3pt line at the Forum.vs the Suns (which I saw live).

    To the creator of this video: WELL DONE, my dude! Eddie Jones was probably the best talent the lakers had pre-Kobe (love the bench reaction!) and post-Magic. I loved Eddie back in the day and even I was shocked at how he would just YAM on fools in this vid. Ceballos steal/rebound outlet to Van Exel. Dime to Eddie. This isn't just a great Eddie Jones highlight real, it's a great NBA highlight real. 10/10
    And the Chick Hearn commentary? This is the greatest sports commentator (other than Vin Scully) that ever got to bless the mic with his velvety caviar and diamonds voice.

    Eddie Jones was a beast one of my favorite Lakers people overlook him when Shaq and him use to play together they act as if Shaq had no help but he did and this guy was his sidekick.

    This guy made 3 all-star teams and he could do it all. The man's athleticism was underrated. Does not get enough credit for how good he was. They should have moved him to SF with Kobe at the 2 and That woulda been crazy with Van Exel, Shaq, Horry, sheesh

    I was 12 living in LA when Jones wore #6. I waited outside a friends (who bought me his jersey) house and 3 guys pulled up and told me they would shoot me for my jersey. Back then I had nothing and this jersey was everything to me. I keep it as a reminder of who I am.

    Comparisons are always unfair, but I always saw Jones as a 2nd coming of Scottie Pippen. Finess, power, defense, all into a total package. I always wishes the Lakers would’ve kept him & used him as a swingman: Play him at small forward, and switch him to off guard whenever Kobe needed a breather. Kobe & Eddie on the floor together would’ve been the next MJ/Pippen combo IMO!

    • @vdLeo-je6os
      @vdLeo-je6os Год назад

      I agree with you 100% but Kobe and Eddie were both 6.6 shooting guard. The only way to stay was to be a back up role player for Kobe with 20 minutes playing time.

    Bro they had this play engraved in stone. Ceballos gets the board, van exel runs the break into the paint and tosses it to Eddie. So clean

    Jerry West sure knew talent when he spotted it. Van Exel, Elden Campbell, Eddie Jones, and of course Kobe Bryant. Got Eddie Jones’ autograph at an opening of a Nike store in Beverly Hills. Took few buddies with me to meet him. Quiet guy. Still have the signed card.

    Eddie was def. one of the good lakers players. Lost consistency though towards the end (*especially with his jumpshots 2 pt'ers and 3'pters), think thats why he got traded t'gether with campbell. Great upload btw.....
