What about the sulpur tablets for wine? I understand they need to be dangled in the airgap above the wine. I guess I need to be careful about overfilling so the tablet doesn't contact the wine? Am using a 50 litre chestnut barrel. Greetings from Spain.
I just bought a two liter barrel my question is what kind of treatment you do to your barrel because your looks shiny , what kind of paint is that for the barrel thank u
Couldn’t you just have the barrels up on their bottoms instead of on their side when aging? What’s the purpose of storing a barrel in its side instead of upright?
Old video, hopefully someone can answer my question, do proof and traille hydrometers and refractometers work after barrel aging, or do wood sugars throw them off
The thickness of the wood is very important, a worker can make three times as many barrels in a day with thin wood but thin wood reacts to climate changes, will twist, warp and break the hoops or crack the wood. The best way to compare barrel quality / thickness of wood staves is by checking the shipping weight. These barrels are mass-produced imitations and only come in medium char.
+Clay Johnston You are right about the wood thickness and importance. You are wrong to assume these barrels are only available in medium char since we can make them to order.
G'day, Sir! I've been itching to try this myself, but I've been cautioned against using 40% ABV spirits, because "you'll extract more water soluble compounds faster than you'd find if you use cask strength spirits. Can go kinda sideways and taste off. " . . . Do you have any experience with lower proof spirits? Or should I be aiming for the 50-70% ABV home distiller forum's seem to recommend?
I used to sell the same ones It was great because I would buy 1 liter barrels for $7.00 each and sell for $14.00 a nice profit. But the big problem was thy fall apart and the wood is still saturated with impurities because the wood is from old whiskey barrels.
How much of the liquor can I expect to lose by the wood absorbing it?
where did you find those great barrel racks?

the top with the tap isnt charred so it would be alot easier to just stand it up like a barrel and theres no need to rotate

+Mike Warn - Not sure where you bought your barrels from but these are not the same you were selling.

No one cares if wine is aged in oak barrels
Yes we do care. The taste is Oaky/Smokey....goes well with Red Wine.
