  • Ingenuity is one of the most prominent characteristics of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. The Ugly Stick is the perfect example of that ingenuity in action. This makeshift instrument fashioned out of a mop handle, bottle caps, tin cans, rubber boots, and other household items fit for noise making, has a distinctive percussive sound. Watch as Wade and Charlie demonstrate the musical capability of this fine piece of Newfoundland engineering.

I am 72 from Winnipeg and when I was very young, we used to say that so-and-so looked like they had been whomped with an ugly stick. Never new there really was such a thing. Thanks for this.

If Google was able to auto generate the subtitles for this video then their tech is beyond understanding. Oh brave new world...

I'm from the UK and obviously have exposure to South-West British and Irish accents (and the Newfie accent is generally considered to be somewhere between a combination of the two of these). But the accent of the guy in the green shirt had me hanging on for dear life. I'm thinking that only his mother and siblings could possibly understand him.
