01-21-2023 Man my dad during his life used to listen to Fathead all of the time . And I did to as a child and now well into my 60s I still listen to him every day. Beautiful sounds brings back beautiful memories 🎺🥁🎼❤
Yessss David fathead Newman. My song. I have the best of album. This was our family anthem. When this song played, “I don’t know where youre going but you gotta get the hell outta here. The bbq is over!
Gentle person , great personality, exceptional performer whose soulfully Smooth style has given birth to the misnomer "Smooth Jazz" Soprano , alto and tenor saxophones have been his instruments of choice, as well as concert flute. Although physically not around, David's magnificent works affirm his spiritual longevity.
The video of this concert is worth getting. Theres a great version of Willow Weep for Me and a soulful treatment of Aint Misbehavin,. I bought it from Amazon.
The sound is fantastic. I just took a moment or two to confirm that this DVD is entitled Jazz Legends: Live At The NJ Jazz Festival 1987 before putting my money down, should arrive tomorrow. Thanks for the recommendation.
@StradMan37 Hi! You must have got to this clip the minute I put it up - because I added that info about a minute later!! Yeah - he's another great American stylist - They don't make them like this any more... fabulous stuff Bob Bob
This was Rollin Porter's theme song in the late 50s.(San Francisco Bay Area) I had to know the name of the performer so I called the station,( KDIA or KWBR~ same station but changed call letters so many years ago and I don't remember which or when), then I went right out and bought the LP (remember those?) I believe the title of the album said Ray Charles presents David "Fathead" Newman.
@TimPriceJazz Yes, Indeed! And then some.. "The Genius" himself was an expert and a hell of a sax player so the plain fact that Ray Charles allowed "Fathead" to be his own sax ambassador says a lot more than any of the people's words. If He wasn't much better than great, he would have been knocked out of the studio so the "Genius" could record it by him self just like the damn bitches ended up with their recording of the song "I Believe To My Soul" were Ray sings the whole girl choir alone. LOL :) Fathead is the Genius of Saxophone and then some! Period!
This clip is from the New Jersey Jazz Festival in 1987..

One of the greatest and most consistant players. Beautiful sounds and note choice.
What a great band! ---- Mr Newman reminding us that he was a true master of the alto as well as the tenor.

Steve Nelson is still playing. I saw him in NY a couple of years ago and he was AMAZING!
Boy do I miss working with Fathead..such a beautiful soul.

I can’t believe I was in NJ and i missed this. Just think, these little kids running around are over 30. Thanks for the idea to get the DVD.
I'm at a loss to think of anything more beautiful than this. Live jazz, but more importantly, jazz alive.
He also was a great flute player.

Yes, that's the title. I have it on vinyl. It was also used as a theme by Joel Dorn in Philly in the 60's. Fathead is the reason I play tenor.
🔥🔥🔥🔥

Guess everybody's had some "Hard Times" because nobody wants to disagree and advocate for "Theme Song from Good Times" to be played instead.
I hear you man, and nobody wants to disagree but "Let The Good Times Roll" when they are rolling.
Very clever! I get the other comment but from a musical point of view, you were very funny! Thanks.
and if you ever get discouraged with being a human ... :)))
where can i find the sheet music?
By listening to it and transcribing it.
not enough long hair, the clothes are not 1973,the hand held camera is not 1973. it's definitely closer to 1993. but '93, is too late I believe.
Im really sad at how Ray portrayed David Newman because he was so inaccurate from how he really is
Soooooo no one gonna talk about that mallet solo? How in the pocket it was
