Just making sure people know that every human is part of the SAME RACE. We are ONE RACE. Chris mentioned that there are people from different races in the NBA. But that's not true. The NBA is so diverse there are people that have different ethnic backgrounds, skin color, and ways of life. In the end, we stick together as part of our race, no matter our variations that make us different. That was very brilliantly displayed by Adam Silver, and anyone who supports the fight against bigotry, and racism in this today and age. It is totally unacceptable for people like Sterling to exist in such a prominent era in this country. There's just no room for negativity.

Somewhat similar to the tension between the North and South during the early late 1850's about slavery in this country, which ultimately led to the U.S. Civil War, but of course on a lower scale. The problem with this situation was that he was illegally recorded in the privacy of his home. We all make mistakes, say things in private we wouldn't normally say. The tapes shouldn't even seen the light of day. Would you like to be in the privacy of your home fearing what you say? Not everyone is perfect some people even crack jokes with friends, imagine getting fired from your job for that. Racism is ugly, but I believe people should have the freedom to at least be able to express themselves in privacy without persecution. No matter what your opinions are. Tolerance isn't just accepting all races but also accepting people's ignorance. Just my thoughts. Love you Smoove.
RACISM is different from prejudice or discrimination. All humans can be prejudiced or practice discrimination based on personal preferences. All humans do not have the power to institutionalize their prejudicial attitudes into laws and structures that favor one race over the other. This is the heart of racism.

I'm not black but I'm a minority, and I despise racist people. Donald Sterling's comments were racist and offensive. But can we really ban him from the NBA and fine him $2.5 mil because of what he said in a private conversation that happened to be caught on tape? Don't get me wrong, it's incredible an actual NBA owner could say those kind of things, but honestly. It's not like he took some kind of action or backed up an action with those comments. It's a wrong opinion, but it's still just an opinion, after all. If we start policing what people think and believe in, how are we any different than North Korea or some country like that? I applaud NBA for making such a swift response on this issue, and it's definitely a step in the right direction, but this isn't the way to do it.
And for those of you who think white people are the only racist ones, you're kidding yourselves. There are people like that in every race. It's just that white people have a history so they get away with way less than the others.

Although I agree with you in a political context, in a moral context, it would not be smart to do anything less than that. Say that adam silver did nothing about this issue, then it kind of sends a message that the nba tolerates this type of racial view. And I know they don't, not many people do tolerate racism this day in age, but I'm just saying that it would set the example that you can get away with stuff like this. In reality, I believe that silver's decision was more of a statement than it was just punishment. He was sending a message to all people who shared sterling's views and this incident will likely be the basis for future racial discrimination cases across all sports. 2.5 million dollars, lifetime ban, and forced sale of the team sound really harsh for some opinions, albeit, flawed opinions. But again, I believe that adam silver had to make a statement that the nba wouldn't tolerate discriminatory views.

Adding on to what Andrew Chang said, this was just as much a business decision as it was a moral one. Sponsors were dropping endorsements left and right, and it appears the players and coaches from several if not all the playoff teams were going to sit out starting last night, if something drastic wasn't done. This would've hurt the NBA as a business in an unprecedented way. And it's not the first time, years ago there was an owner for the Cavaliers (not the current one) who felt the roster should be comprised mostly of white players because he thought that would result in more sales, plus his financial handling of the club was atrocious.

What he said was completely uncalled for, but you have to understand the time he grew up in. The man is 80 yrs old, he was born during the great depression to give you an idea how old he is. His mindset is completely different from a 18-35 year old man. He grew up in a time in a time where racism was still pretty heavy influenced. Not making excuses just saying all men of that age are somewhat racist, no matter their race.

1) The first round series are close only because the refs are controlling the game and evening the score when teams started to pull ahead. The League has turned into a WWF style entertainment.

honestly, while his comments were disgusting, racist, and flat out wrong, its not like he killed someone. He said something wrong, in private. While i disagree with what he said, he has the right to say anything he wants. Banning him is wrong.

If I work within a company, and I say some wild racist shit, and its caught on tape, spread around and now everyone in the office knows I'm a racist, including my bosses, I would expect to be sacked. I'm ruining the companies reputation and making if difficult for others to work with me. Now times that by 100, so a league largely funded by advertisement and public money's reputation is being tarnished by one man, why would they not sack him? It's actively losing the league money, damaging their reputation and making it difficult for others to work with him. Freedom of speech is that the government can imprison you for things you say, it doesn't mean you can go around and act like a dick and not expect any repurcussions from anyone.

Donald Sterling has said disparaging comments towards minorities before, it was included in the lawsuit brought by the Justice Department. The NBA didn't care until this recent incident came out, and with the 24/7 news cycle it blew up in their faces.

Im not in any way defending what Sterling said. I, like any decent citizen, am completely against racism. However the man is losing everything he's worked for in this league over 2 or 3 sentences. I think that this was a publicity move by the new commissioner to send a message rather than being a realistic punishment. I do believe that Sterling should not be allowed to be an owner, but I believe that he should of been told behind closed doors to resign and now he is going to be forced to sell. Something that in all honesty Sterling can pretty much fight with a very good lawyer to make out like a bandit. I know that people are going to champion the NBA for this decision but to me I just feel like they made the wrong one.

While I don't agree with any of the comments Sterling made I can't disagree with Silver's decision enough [though he honestly didn't have a choice in the matter]. There were numerous reports of several NBA teams [Clippers were among those teams] were planning on boycotting playoff games if no major action was taken against Sterling, so in a sense Silver's hands were tied. These guys are overpaid to play ball not get caught up in petty off court drama.
No matter how much you disagree with Sterlings comments he still has his first amendment rights, and not to mention, his comments were OFF THE RECORD, and IN HIS OWN HOME. These recordings were gathered without his consent, so I call some serious BS on everyone involved in this mess. This shouldn't have even been news in the first place. If Sterling would have been black and made anti white statements no one would have batted an eye, it's just reverse racism nothing more.
Either way, this nonsense tabloid crap should be left to TMZ.
First amendment only applies to the government not private organizations. Sterling can't be arrested, but the NBA is a private organization so they can do whatever they want.

Am I the only one skeptical of Donald Sterling actually having said this stuff? I know he's had past racist incidents so it wouldn't surprise me if it he actually said it, but the person that released the recording is suing him so for it to come up right now just seems highly suspect IMO.
Now if it is true, I completely agree with how it was handled (though suspended for life at his age is more of a show-move than an actual punishment) but Adam Silver did a great job handling it.
It's also pretty ironic that if he's forced to sell it, it will probably be to Magic Johnson who is the specific person he commented about during the recording. But with the sell, Sterling will be making around $500 million so it's not like he's totally losing here.
What makes me sick is how people defend this racist. Sure this is a free country and we're to say whatever we want TO A LIMIT. Using "saying whatever we want in the privacy of our home" is a completely invalid statement. If someone threatened the President they would get arrested, therefore this saying whatever you want etc etc. is invalid.

It's not about defending him. But just be honest, most people if not all, have said something racist in their lifetime. And the color of their skin doesn't matter. But to get such a harsh treatment for a private conversation is a little too much in my opinion. Im not advocating what sterlling said but what his girlfriend did by recording him was illegal and because the NBA used the illegally obtained evidence stirlling could sue the NBA and win the case. So what i am saying is that what stirlling's girlfriend did was not only wrong for setting him up for something he said IN HIS OWN PRIVATE HOME but it is also illegal. Stirlling is a terrible person and i hate him for being a racist but this shouldn't even be a fine.
Doesn't matter whether it was illegally recorded or not. It is out publicly and causing harm the NBA. Just like any company when someone within the company does something that harms the company they have the right to punish them within the rules they set up. In this instance, that meant being banned for life, in pretty much any other case that person would be fired without question. Everything the league did was legal, it won't even make it to court. He may be able to sue her specifically for slander or something similar, but the league is within their legal rights.

I believe Donald got what he deserved NBA-wise, but people should understand that this isn't the first time he has been racist against minorities. Not just blacks because in 2006, he discriminated against Koreans and Hispanics by not letting them rent apartments. There are more people in this world just like him that need to be taken care of. While I hate Sterling's remarks and views towards society, I'm much more worried that we crucified a person based on his private remarks.
He's an 80 year old man; we can't ask everyone to change their views to fit what society is today. My grandfather is hitting on 80, and he lived in a time in China where women were inferior to men. Do I deplore his views on women? Of course. But how should he be blamed for the way he's been raised and the way he's been taught for 60+ years?
And finally, the tape itself is dirty. It was obtained, obviously illegally, by TMZ.
In America, we like to pride ourselves with freedom of expression. Because of that, even backwards bigots like Sterling SHOULD be protected. He certainly did not have due process.
And close on a final thought, there are so many white supremecists out that have violently attacked African Americans; they have done more harm to a single African American than Sterling has ever done. Yet, we protect them - they live their lives spewing hatred. Think Westboro Baptist Church - they're still tax exempt from the government.
Personally, I'd like to see these people removed from the earth as well, but we cannot give up our constitution because of our emotions, which is sadly what we did this week.
***** That was not my point. I actually completely agree with you - in my personal opinion, if he is removed from this earth, the earth would be a better place. There is no proof, however, that he mistreated them. There is proof that he discriminated against minorities in the housing area, unrelated to the NBA - I would have liked to see him punished there. However, our Constitution specifically allows for freedom of expression, especially in the privacy of your own home (1st + 4th Amendment). I see this situation as unfortunate, because who wouldn't act and react with hatred after hearing those comments. It's unfortunate, because when you are wealthy and successful, you are one comment away from downfall. There are plenty of old, white guys living in the South who still believe that slavery is appropriate, and that all white-schools and all white bathrooms are appropriate. However, they get to live their life normally because of our Constitution, which protects them. Our Constitution should protect everyone, but it failed in that regard in the case of Donald Sterling.
As for the punishment levied by the NBA, the NBA is a private corporation with its own constitution, and Silver ruled within that constitution, so I agree with the ruling. But people really need to have more empathy instead of simply yelling "racist".
Roy Kim I did not read Allen West's comment, but I'm sure my sentiment is shared by a lot of people who are willing to see past the emotion. The thing is, people are scared of speaking against the public anger at the moment, understandably so. It's disappointing to see so many African Americans ask for a figurative "lynching" and "quick justice" whilst still dealing with similar remnants of racism still prevalent today.
Okay first off... It's not like we sending Donald Sterling off to jail. He's just gonna get kicked out of the NBA. Honestly with all the money he has and in his advanced stage of life, a retirement on some private island in the Caribbean is probably what he's looking at. Sterling is free to keep believing in his hatred, bigotry and ignorance; but the NBA will not allow him to remain due to the demographic racial majority of its fanbase and stars.
Also... the U.S. has no say at ALL in this and shouldn't. Their Constitution is not applicable here because, at the end of the day, the NBA is a business association dictated by laissez-faire economics. What Sterling said compromised profits of both his organization (pretty sure the Clippers lost a vast majority of their sponsorships since the start of this) and the NBA as a whole. As much as the players, owners and the media wanna make this a milestone for racial equality, this is much more about money than it is social justice.
Aaron Hidalgo Yes, again, I'm not debating the ruling against Sterling - I thought it was fair and practical. As I stated in an earlier post, the NBA is a private for-profit business, and thus under its own constitution it has broad powers in terms of control.
My issue is with the numerous people (like Smoove, although I still enjoy his videos) attacking Sterling as if he's a devil or something. Whereas you believe he is free to keep believing in his hatred, many people I see on Twitter, Facebook, etc. even prominent celebrities, feel like he needs to be reformed.
This is 2014 no matter how you are raised you still have to adapt to today's society, making remarks like that is just stupid and should be fined for that
