👏👏👏 Finally Chad opens the eyes of rookies who think that everything they see on RUclips is what they need and works. Not everything you see is better, less is more and our back will thank you.
😂 I’m just sharing what I’ve learned from my own experience over the yrs. I’ve definitely made some heavy rigs. But now I keep them simple and get the same results!
@chadwin I did heavy rigs too bro 😆 🤣 but around 2 years I took the decision that to sold all that heavy stuff for my back pain problems and now I have lightweight stuff in my rig and I can say thank you Lord for that wise decision 😹 Well buddy great reel. Keeping doing your great job. 🍻
If you’re shooting handheld, all that weight it great for reducing shake. If you’re using a gimbal, you’re already reducing shake so there’s no need for all that extra crap. Great content
Right tool for the job is all it boils down to. I’ve done small short films and big commercials with the Alexa Mini hundreds of times, but then use an FX6 for a Netflix doc on Sylvester Stallone, sometimes built up, sometimes stripped bare on a little gimbal with a G master on AF. Don’t stick to the same build at all times, change based on need. I’m a 1st AC
We know why they build out like that. To make them look more qualified thus being more expensive. But the shotgun mic is 20x better than built on mics.
yeah, a lot of people build out their rigs just for looks. but i only build mine out with the stuff that I need. a shotgun mic does sound better than built in mics, but I still don't use that audio cause it's not great for voice.
I appreciate this. Ive been doing research on these items since Im trying to create my setup. So many people on RUclips have the matte box and the main reason they have it is because “it looks cool”. These people that say this often have mediocre content but great product reviews
One more improvement, put it on a monopod so you can use a belt to support it. Works like a charm, takes a lot of strain off your arms, and you can get some pseudo crane shots out of it.
yeah, that's a good idea. sometimes i use a monopod, but not usually with a gimbal. i've seen guys using the method you mentioned though and it looks like it works!
the lightest gimbal is steady hands and a good amount of built in motion reduction :D always good to practice packing just right, still building a setup myself and working with what i've got
Maybe cause he assumed a mic on a gimbal would be used for outdoor/distances? If I was indoor and doing a run an gun interviews with movement and b roll I’d sure want a gimbal + mic set up
that's a hard one! usually I shoot with my FX3 which is full frame and does great with lowlight. I also use the lens fully wide open at f1.8 then if they let me, I bring my own backlight and shine it on the dance floor, but that can kill the mood
18lbs for a wedding gimbal rig is way too much.~8lbs is the sweet spot with 2 handles as high as it will go clearing the arms and just a few inches left and right from the center. Not the ones that stick out 9"+. I do keep the focus motor on, but attach it to the zoom ring on my a7s3. I can change my focal length without taking my hand off the gimbal. l also add a quick release between the tripod feet and gimbal so i can quickly mount it onto a tripod if i need to.
I LOVE heavy handling rigs and gimbals. Don't ditch the mic, the mic weighs nothing. Great for ambient audio. It ain't gonna sound like crap if you use it accordingly and correctly. But a mere two years ago it was how to expand, now you telling people to take it away. Sponsors decided to quit paying that mortgage I see lol
No way I give up my focus motor. My gimbal rig, rs3 pro, fuji xt3 and varind, focus motor, briefcase handle with the ninja V and sometime a videomic pro on the ninja v. Yes the audio is kinda bad, but still on some event it's important to have sound of the crownd, ambiance and capt speech quickly without having to adjust the rig. The ones who works on a gimbal without an external monitor are just psycho haha
The extra handle can help, but personally I’ve found I can get good results without it. If your camera body and lens have good AF, I find that it’s usually more accurate and quick on a gimbal than anything I can do manually while moving.
Don't drop the shotgun mic unless you have a better option. the mic is practically weightless, and the internal mic will pick up sounds of the camera/gimbal. Best option would be a wireless mic with the receiver on your belt, not on the camera gimbal setup, but a shotgun is an easy compromise if you don't have a mic person to carry a boom mic or lav mics on everyone you want to hear
@apoptose1558 I mean wireless lav mics on the "actors" with the wireless receiver on the camera man's belt. the receiver won't add to sound and yes, poorly placed lav mics could pick up clothing rustle, but most are fine tuned to only pick up voices. I have inexpensive lav mics that I tried to use to pick up bird song and they caught absolutly nothing. They work beautifully for human voice though.
it's the PolarPro MagLock VND filters. I really like them cause they have hard stops so you don't get cross polarization ever. They're also quick to snap on and off with the magnets. little pricey, but worth it!
Loading lut, bigger and brighter screen for focus (+sunhood), external recording with no limits on ssd (cheaper media), desqueezing if you use anamorphic, aspect ratio can be useful too
Truth! Those rigged out gimbals are just not practical.
Yeah, they’re usually way over-rigged! You can really get away with just a few simple things and get good results on a gimbal
Never even thought that someone would ever rig their gimbal like that. A small external monitor is all I need and want.
👏👏👏 Finally Chad opens the eyes of rookies who think that everything they see on RUclips is what they need and works. Not everything you see is better, less is more and our back will thank you.

I've started shooting handheld more and only using the gimbal when shooting while walking or for some artistic look. But the IBIS does help a lot xD
Best advise!!
So lightweight, I ditched the gimbal as well. And even ditched the camera
hahaha i film with my mind now
Couple years ago, they showed us how to build the monstrosity. Now take it all out. Did the sponsors stop sending money.
Underrated comment 😂

Liked for “my back” 😂
😂 best part of the video
I have a Crane 2s and I’ve never seen it built out like that. I’m actually impressed.
yeah, it's not normally built out this much....i try to run light as much as i can, but sometimes it does get built up more.
Mic is very light you might want to keep it
The issue is clearance. Some people would have a rear side handle and attach the mic to that then run a wire
@@redracerb18that’s what I do. Works great
@@redracerb18I put in on a cold shoe on my ninja v personnally
I shoot for 10-12 hours straight during events. I can’t do big rigs like that. I got a tiny lens and a ronin sc. I record audio on a H6
yep! i totally get that. I've done Very long event days like that for years and its killer. having a nice light setup like you have is a life saver

I used to do exactly that, then learned to only use the bare minimum. I haven't used my monitor in over a year
All I need is my briefcase handle and my monitor use a ride wireless go in my subject and roll out. DJI RS2 and FX30
That sounds like a pretty minimal setup, I like it! The Rode wireless go is also my “go to” for lav mics on a gimbal. 🙌
the lightest gimbal is steady hands and a good amount of built in motion reduction :D
always good to practice packing just right, still building a setup myself and working with what i've got
Easyrig and flycam support systems help with heavier set ups if they’re absolutely necessary
yes! i'm using a gimbal support rig from Df Digital foto now
Agree almost 💯, i love to use dual handle grip. I use minimal setup almost for every shoot
yeah, using dual handle grips def helps with stabilization! you're probably stronger than me too haha
@@chadwin😅
LOL at the focus motor Wilhelm!
I'd still keep the mic. Not sure why you said they sound terrible.

Tips for when filming in dark scenarios like when they turn off the lights at the dance floor and only depend on dj lights?

yeah I agree! I try to keep the weight down as low as possible too. that's a good idea making it easy to take on and off of your tripod
Gimbals aren't supposed to have loads on it. I had a moza and only used it a few times with a Sony a7m3.
yeah, you def wanna mount the lightest camera setup you can on the motors. but the rest of the gimbal body is free game haha!
I love my RS3 mini! Efficient and professional
RS3 Mini with Briefcase handle on my gimbal. Nimble like Ninja.
i gotta try the briefcase handle with my RS3 mini still! sounds very nice
Never seen someone run a transmitter on a handheld rig without support. Why not just get dual handles for more leverage and mounting points?
exactly what i was thinkin, thats how i run mine and its never been easier
picks up pocket 3
The ultimate solution! 👏 haha
Great video! The lightest gimbal rig is to use handheld + gyro data.
Edit: I hope no one sees the sarcasm.
in my case i have to use a manual focus conversion cuz my camera in 4k mode uses contrast based auto focus and also a small crop
yeah, it's always a struggle when your camera doesn't have good AF. but i like manual focusing a lot of the time too, so that works!
If you hold the gimbal closer to your body, you lessen the effective weight. It scales linearly. Half arms length, halves the effective weight
All that equipment adds nothing to the visuals; it's just for aesthetics.
yea, it doesn't improve the image quality at all, but sometimes you need the gear for other parts of your workflow
Bro is downgrading his rig completely
Haha 😆 could be a downgrade to some! For me it’s an upgrade cause now my back is happy 😃
You can use your phone as a monitor. Works really well.
Get yourself a monopod with extendable feet. Then your back will thank you even more.
yeah, i should try using my gimbal with my monopod more! my only issue with it is that i'm usually using my gimbal moving around, not holding still
Just be strong 💪
haha! i'm hitting the gym, trying!
i would keep the focus motor and use it to control zoom. no way am i gonna use my hand to rotate the lens while filming
that's fair!
A smaller gimbal doesn’t mean lighter weight, smaller gimbals are just denser

Crane 2s is great value but very heavy lolol
Also ditch the camera and that heavy GM lens, go super minimal and start filming with gopro. Its not the gear that matters BROOO.
why not get a full body rig, I forget what its called, but its the kind that will knock your teeth out if you arent careful
I have a rig heavier than that but I also have a steadycam

Actually you can get a Bodymount
Actually, the heaviest gears are let the customers think you are pro.even we can do the same thing in light way😢

What do you call the accessory to attach ext monitor to rs mini?
it's the smallrig gimbal monitor mount arm.
I mean doesn't the handle help anyways? Also autofocus isnt exactly reliable for professional shoots.
The extra handle can help, but personally I’ve found I can get good results without it.
If your camera body and lens have good AF, I find that it’s usually more accurate and quick on a gimbal than anything I can do manually while moving.
What do you use to attach that monitor to the gimble?
it's the SmallRig monitor mount arm. I'm releasing a whole video about the setup tomorrow morning! geni.us/RS3mount

the mattebox has a VND/CPL filter inside of it. but you can also use a screw on filter for the lightweight version

That and you can monitor exposure better if you’re shooting in LOG.

A bit too general. Depends really depends for which purpose.
