    Mine is always wearing a flat collar with my information stitched on to avoid tags getting caught in things when unsupervised. We use a martingale for training and either martingale or front clip harness for walks, front clip for hikes, and back clip when using long leads. I love all the different tools available!

    Please DON'T leave choke collars on your Dog. My dog broke her buckle collar, so until I could replace her buckle collar I put on a regular choke collar. While playing with another dog, the other dog twisted her choke collar. I couldn't get it off of her, no matter how hard I tried and she passed away. Please don't use a choke collar unless you need it for training.

    I use a flat collar for tags / id purposes, a chain for leash walking because my dog can slip out of properly fitted flat collars, and I recently purchased a prong collar which, once it arrives, I will be using instead of his chain collar. My dog is heel trained so it really isn't necessarily to use a training collar for say, but I'd rather him be wearing one and not need it over the other way around

    Prong is not for self correcting, it will only slightly discourage pulling in that regard. A quality Herm Sprenger distributes pressure evenly over many points which is why they are so safe and effective. A dog that pulls will easily continue to do so with it on. It needs to be a properly timed pop correction in order to stop a behavior pattern.

  • @mitty8145
    @mitty8145 3 года назад

    is there any collar you recommend for dogs with long fur? flat collars really damaged mine's coat/created a collar line. i walk my dogs with harnesses so the collar is just really to hold his tags and stuff.

    • @Monkoodog
      @Monkoodog  3 года назад +1

      For me martingale is the best for long and short fur both.

    • @EarthlingCanine
      @EarthlingCanine 3 года назад

      I recommend the Herm Sprenger brand fur-saver. It's a slip chain, but if you get the right size you can just clip the two chain loops together on the leash clip and it acts just like a flat collar but is much safer for your dogs fur and is stronger than a thin flat collar. You could also get a limited slip collar in a style where the collar is thin, or use a prong, although prongs are more for stubborn or untrained dogs to communicate safely and effectively. Contrary to what this channel said, prongs do not cause pain when used appropriately, though some dogs find them too adversive, in which case I'd recommend a starmark collar instead, which is considered a much more gentle form of the prong collar. I also recommend if you do use a prong collar, only use Herm Sprenger brand. Any other brand prong is dangerous.

    I have a mixed breed dog, and he is losing fur around his neck. The flat collar is further tampering his fur, and I was searching for a chain-like collar. I found that the choke chain is the only one available here, and I want to know if I can use one without hurting him.

      You only tug the choke chain to apply corrections, if needed. The better trained your dog is, the fewer corrections will be needed. If your dog isn't pulling, there will be no choking. Do not leave the choke collar on the dog when you are not holding it.

      @@danzsyy I get that, German Shepard’s and big dogs like them grow fast. but I really don’t suggest this collar, he can start to not enjoy walks because he will associate being choked with going on a walk. Maybe try a chest harness? It gives you control but doesn’t hurt the dog. When he pulls his body turns which leads him to stop pulling. We used this with our golden retriever at a young age and he was amazing after a few months walking with it. Although he really doesn’t get out much now since he’s 10 years old 😂

      @@Monkoodog lifting an determined attacking dog by the back legs not only won't make it let go but even if it did that immediately makes the owner grabbing the dog the next target. The proper way to get a determined attacking dog off your own dog is to wrap a leash around its neck and lift straight up. Yes it will hurt the attacking dog but your dog should be more important than the aggresive one trying to kill your dog.

    And for those of you who DONT know: prong and choke chain collars are last resort methods for pulling dogs that can't be walked otherwise. Have you tried a halti or head collar? Slip lead? A no pulling harness? Double ended leash? Waist connection? Professional help/training? (If you can't afford to get your dog help there are other options but you should really think about the future of your pet) No? Then forget about the prong or choke collar as you clearly don't know what you're doing and are skipping steps.
    I gave my dog a prong collar after trying everything else (to my knowledge) on the market (including trajners) and to this day I am still looking for any other options for him... I guess my comment is too late for some but I'm hoping to help other owners. Never resort to the least comfy option unless you really have to. More often than not a dog WONT NEED a prong or choke chain collar. I see dogs that weigh 30lbs on choke chains? Seriously? You can't handle 20 lbs?🙄

    This video is straight bs if you actually put on a prong collar it shouldn't pinch your dog unless you get them at walmart. You just feel pressure it no pain whatsoever it is an amazing tool because instead of having your dog detangle themselves you can correct them and use it only as a communication and not as a restraint, all training collars have their place and all work great for different dogs, and the purpose of a training collar is to teach a dog how to walk on a loose leash with corrections, if your dog chokes themselves out on it that's on you, and flat collars have no purpose except holding your dogs tags,and should not be used in leash walking in my opinion

At least until he's trained well enough to consistently obey off leash, around the house etc. Our 110 lb Lab "puppy" (18 months old) came to us without consistent training. He's done well with the prong collar and choke for leash training. but around the house or yard he tends to slip out of the flat collar if you need to correct him or get his attention.

      @@Monkoodog I'm gonna re-watch the video start to finish and try to give a good in depth response because it seems like in your search of the "five most common collars" you also went with a lot of word of mouth information rather than ones based in the structure of the dog and the way the tools actually work. I'd also argue the collars you picked aren't top five, but that's for a different comment. If you'd like to have me help you work on an updated video about a larger variety of tools I'd be glad to help out. But let's get started:
      1. The Flat Collar- It wasn't something you said, but more something you didn't say and showed wrong. Flat collars, fitted appropriately, should be placed high up behind the dogs ears and sit snug (but not tightly) without slipping down. The farther down any collar sits on a dog's neck, the more risk it presents to damaging the trachea. One of the biggest reasons dogs pull on flat collars (other than owners improperly introducing the dog to a collar and encouraging pulling even if they don't mean to) is because of this improper fitting where the collar sits low on the neck. Quick release collars are much easier to fit properly.
      2. The Martingale Collar- martingales often come in full nylon or match the fabric throughout, I actually have a hard time finding a martingale that's partially chain, but you did note other types exist so I'll give you that, but I also noticed you don't mention how the collar you present is improperly made, the chain on that collar is far too large for it to work smoothly and thus properly you also fit it poorly again, martingales sit high up just like every other collar and should sit relatively snug, definitely not with Enough space to fit your entire hand under it. Also martingales don't work like slip chains, they work more like limited slip collars, slip chains have no pre-set stopping point, whereas martingales can only "tighten" so much before the collar prevents it from going further and causing more potential damage to the dog when used improperly.
      3. "Choke Chain"- that title alone is misinformation/misleading as is. Choke chains do not choke a dog when used appropriately, they are appropriately called slip chains, as the loop slips over the dogs head, and the ring smoothly slides along the chain when appropriately sized. Which leads me to my next point, the slip chain you got is way too big and the chain itself is also too big. Also anyone can use a slip chain if they do proper research and if they are uncomfortable doing it on their own they can get help from a trainer. The only "trainers" I've seen move away from slip chains and slip leads are ones who don't know what they're doing and hurt a dog or who are part of the "purely positive force free" crowd who have absolutely no clue what they are doing at all. Slip lead pros that were missed: slip leads are a great tool to use when weaning off a prong collar or flat collar, as they give very gentle and smooth communication to a dog that is on the final stages of walking properly on leash. Also a warning that slip leads should never be used on a dog that pulls because of the risk of damage but usage alone is not a risk in and of itself.
      4. Prong Collars- prongs are not only used for correction. They are used for communication. They also work more like a martingale than a slip chain/slip lead. Prong collars do not have to sit behind the ears 100%, there's a great saying "high and tight isn't always right" with prong collars. In general they should sit at or above the midway point of the neck, never below. Prong collars should also be placed so the slip part of the prong where you attach the leash is above or slightly to the side of the dogs neck, not underneath like you placed it at first. I would also have specifically stated the only safe prong collar to use is the Herm Sprenger prong collar. No other brand. You also attached the leash wrong, the leash should be attached directly to the live ring only (which is the ring you wrongly attached with the second collar) and a carabineer should be used to attach the backup collar to the DEAD ring, the one that doesn't move and the one you (wrongly) didn't attach it to. Also prongs have a lot of benefits: prongs provide clear smooth communication to the dog, prongs are safer than flat collars when used appropriately, it is nearly impossible for a dog to choke itself on a prong, prongs are made of very strong metal so they are more likely to come apart than break, which means they are easy to reattach and keep going with your training or walk and most importantly, prongs do NOT cause pain when used appropriately. The only cons?: When used improperly just like any other tool it can cause injury. That's it. Also the prong you put on your dog is way too big, there are only two sizes of Herm Sprenger that should be used, the 2.25mm, and the 3.0mm. the 2.25 should be used by default, the only reason a 3.0mm would be needed is if the dog has a very thick, sense coat that the 2.25 can't get through (even huskies and Chihuahuas should wear the 2.25 mm).
      5. Slip Lead- not directly related to this but you mentioned it so I'm talking about it, harnesses are not for dogs that have issues pulling, a harness should NEVER be used on a dog that is not pulling for a purpose (for example sled dogs or guide dogs) and is just pulling because of excitement etc. Also a "slip lead harnesses" just sounds dangerous, there's no padding, no solid structure to the harness, and I garuntee it wouldn't fit comfortably or correctly. On to the actual slip lead, NO tool should be left on a dog unattended, and any dog can be injured from ANY tool if the tool is used improperly.
      And as a sum up, you say at the end "walk along beside you without pulling" the ONLY collars that should be used on a dog that's pulling are Prong collars and starmark collars, then you can wean off the prong/starmark with limited slip collars, martingale collars, slip chains, etc. Until eventually you get to a dog that walks well on a flat or Martingale collar. Dogs can stay on a prong for communication purposes though too.
      Also the fact you recommend a flat collar for pulling is incredibly dangerous, almost as dangerous as an improperly used slip chain.
