Man as a young white punk back in the day, we had more black punks than most towns- that being said, there were only maybe a dozen or so. Always thought punk should have attracted more black brothers. I know hip hop was a reflection of similar feelings, always thought they were more similar than people would acknowledge.

I was a 17 year old punk kid who went to a Black Flag show and these guys opened up for them and literally blew my friggin mind. A crew of cool as hell black dudes with dreadlocks mashing out some of the fastest hardcore I'd ever heard, and following it up with a reggae song. These guys solidified the lesson of not judging a book by its cover.

@@twatinahatsmith7428 In the U.S. it wasn't chopped up quite that much until long after the fact. I mean, you might've had someone refer to them as punk and someone chiming in to correct them and say it was hardcore, or thrash, whatever, but they were all playing the same gigs, with the same people in the pit, the exact same scene, etc. In my hometown, any given show was usually a 50/50 split between metal bands and punk, and half of that punk would've been considered thrash or hardcore. And I didn't know anybody in that scene that didn't LOVE Bad Brains and generally acknowledge them as the band with their act more together musically than anyone else.

I grew up in NYC, and hung out on the Lower East Side when the Bad Brains arrived in NYC. They were THE band. Many guys idolized them, but most never wanted to open for them because they were just too damn good. But they were all about positive mental attitude, and they were mentors, teachers to the bands coming up. Many of the bands even started emulated them by adding elements of reggae music into their sets. They were the Godfathers of the DC Punk scene, before being banned from almost every venue. Fans Ian Makaye and Minor Threat being heavily influenced by them. Also, John Bloodclot(future Cro Mags singer) tells of Bad Brains offering him a job when he was a homeless, teenage punk, with the stipulation he gets healthy and promoted vegetarianism. They influenced everyone in the NYHC scene, from Beastie Boys, Murphy's Law, Cro Mags, and on and on. HR(Human Rights - their singer, WAS The Bad Brains, and one of, if not the best hardcore punk singers.Sadly, mental illness plagued him and kept the band from blowing up and attaining the bigger audiences, who never got to hear them. They are living legends. Highly recommend the documentary about HR and the Bad Brains titled: "Finding Joseph". Amazingly sad, funny, dramatic, uplighting story of the rise, fall and rise again of the greatest band that should be a household name.

Fun fact (as I've heard anyway): these guys began as a jazz fusion band, the guitarist was the bass player and the bass player was the guitarist, and when they discovered punk rock they switched instruments around. Their original name was Mind Power, which they changed to Bad Brains to reflect the change in musical direction. Around the same time, they discovered reggae and became Rastafarians, and it all just got mashed together into one pot with an amazing and unique end result. We don't get stuff like this anymore, because everything is all pre-packaged and separated and no cross pollination happens because of it. This is why Japan is outdoing the USA in that field, because they're willing to mess around with the established paradigms and get fresh new ideas and sounds--how do you think we got Babymetal? Kei "Kobametal" Kobayashi is a genius, that's why.

Bad Brains is one of the most original and creative bands of all time. And HR is a killer front man too. I remember this vividly 35 years later ...

You can go to virtually any Bad Brains song or video on RUclips and see comments from peoole whose lives were changed in a big way by the Bad Brains. I was born a little too late, and by the time I was able to see them, HR was a shell of his former self, his mind and expressiveness neutered by severe mental illness. But I still remember hearing "Sailin' On" for the first time as a punk-curious 12-year-old - who'd been cutting his teeth on the then-huge Bad Religion and Offspring - and having my brain torn open by the Bad Brains' power and fury. That song, along with "Jealous Again" and "I Love Livin' in the City", made an impression on me of an intensity that nothing else besides heroin has ever been able to replicate. Thankfully, I've put the latter indulgence behind me, but will always continue to relive the excitement that HR and his brothers stirred within me as a kid.

When this 7" single came out in June 1980 it blew thousands of punk minds all over America. Suddenly it was a whole new ballgame. There had been fast hardcore songs before this, but nothing like the obliterating power unleashed here. My friends and I played the song over and over 'till the grooves were worn out. And with every listen we were in awe. Many times I tried to sing along with the words but always wound up failing and crumpled up in a heap on the floor laughing my brains out. This must have been in 1981, the year the single was reissued. The original pressing is extremely rare and is one of the most sought after punk records, fetching thousands of dollars when it comes up at auction. I believe the original tapes have been lost and the version you're hearing now on another youtube post) is from a cd compilation of their greatest hits. But the transfer (probably from a clean 45) has been beautifully done and even though you're going through digital and youtube the sound is still close to the original, and gives you a good idea of the song's incredible power. Bad Brains started out in Washington D.C. as a jazz-fusion band in 1977. But after hearing punk they saw the light. (God bless punk music.) This is what they had to say about their influences in an early magazine interview. "Jah. A big influence was Bob Marley and Stevie Wonder and a group called the Dickies...Bob Marley and Stevie Wonder on the spiritual end and the Dickies more on the musical end. Because when I heard their music I said, 'Gee, it's so fast, this is really bad!' That's what made me really start liking fast rock 'n' roll, which eventually led into hardcore, which is what we're into now. Another big influence was just wanting to change from being a robot in the system. That was the biggest stimulant for me, cuz it was like my back was against the wall, and I couldn't cope with the system."

This band was simply “Way Ahead Of Their Time”. From the early 80’s to mid 90’s there wasn’t a front man alive that could command a stage like HR! No other rhythm section was as tight as them and the guitar riffs are legitimately AMAZING! I could be wrong about this fact, ( I’m wrong, heard this almost 30years ago) but I heard Living Color was formed because BadBrains refused to sign a contract with Island records? HR didn’t sign the contract because the record company had previously ripped off Bob Marley, and wanted them to open up for U2’s summer tour. How punk is that!
Side note: I was lucky enough to see Living Color open for Primus at the 9:30 in DC years ago.. They did a very respectful “Sailing On” by none other than the Greatest Hardcore band EVER!

Lyric isn't "understand a single thing I say" it's "overstand a single word I say". Which is part of H.R.'s delivery - he creates a new word, which I love. See, a lot of BB's thrust was PMA - positive mental attitude - and through that, and H.R. being legitimately insane, you get this crazy creativity that is really energizing and beautiful. Probably difficult to be in a band with, but it's little nuggets like "overstand" that add to how special Bad Brains' music is.

They played the Iguanas club. HR jumped off the stage into the crowed doing an air Christ. I had a boot leg 7'' from that show with HR doing that exact same stage dive. Lost the vinyl in the punk rock rubble of the time.

    • @rudypericolo
      @rudypericolo 5 лет назад

Yeah, you dudes who saw them live back when know!!! I saw them about 2003'ish at the 9:30 club in DC with my wife who is a good decade younger than me so she never got to see them live in their prime, along with what seemed about 90% of the crowd and they didn't realize just how un-HR HR was, he was awful. The band was so tight and so hard but, HR was sadly just a ghost of his former self. He was just standing there, with his hands in his pockets half the time, just speaking the lyrics like he was reciting poetry.
Being DC (harDCore) old school I had heard stories HR was not himself in recent years and if I had known just how bat-shit insane (that's I believe the correct medical term... I think) he had become I probably wouldn't have done what I'm about to talk about. Or even gone to the show... but, hindsight and all.
So here HR is just sucking and here I am drunk, bored and pissed off I just spent like $100 on this. So I belly up to the stage right in front of Dr Know and as a song ends and it gets sorta quiet I yell, "C'mon sing it like you mean it!!" Which clearly heard by most people in the room resulted in:
Me simultaneously getting booed from the kiddies in the crowd that don't know how cheated they're getting. And I see Dr. Know shoot an "I am so mad at you right now" look at HR then look at me and short of shrug his shoulders and give me an I'm sorry look.
Now I know HR was older so I didn't expect to see the 1982 at CBGBs Bad Brains. like i said I didnt know HR was (so sadly and i sincerely mean it) schizophrenic at the time and if I did I wouldn't have shouted him down but, because we were having to watch a man with his hands in his pockets talking when just 15 yrs prior I was treated to:
The nasty, snarling HR barking the lyrics like an angry dog while bounding around the stage like a gymnast on crack with his foot long plus dreads thick as beer cans all over the place... it was just too disappointing to not to say something

@purple beard: for those who appreciate the physical object - perhaps as a tangible aspect of the music itself, or just as an additional piece of art - in addition to the music, vinyl records are sort of the ultimate manifestation (so far). Large artwork on the jacket, lyrics and/or liner notes, printed record sleeves, colored/customized vinyl, etc. CDs may have some of those attributes, but always in a smaller, less engaging format, IMO.

You've arrived, my brother. Within the hardcore community there is no band that is more respected or revered than the Brains. This is no hyperbole, this is the truth. Go ask Henry Rollins. In the pantheon of black or black-led rock acts, these guys are up there with Love and Hendrix. And in retrospect, they've been as innovative as Death within the punk genre. A word about this song. In Rastafarian belief, "I and I" refers to the unity of God and Man. To "go against I" means being forced away not just from the love of God (Jah), but also against the natural order found in the unity of God and man. Like someone in this thread said, welcome to the Brains. Your life will never be the same again.

I was lucky enough growin up in Philly to see Bad Brains in I think '84(I was 12), short dreads, small stage at St Marys on Drexel's campus. My older brothers brought me along since I heard them play them on a cassette and got into it, snuck me in sayin I was 18, absolutely blew my mind and I went to every show I could after that. These guys were revolutionary in music to me, from the fastest hardcore to the best Dub reggae sets, changed my life forever, even my perception of the world around me. HR is a frontman like no other and no one can compare, except for maybe Angelo from Fishbone. My dream show then would have been a Bad Brains/Fishbone show but who would open for who lol. I've been lucky enough to meet them as well, just the nicest people all around(I mean Fishbone as well).
