on october 7th in 1988 wnbc which was an adult contemporary station and a full service station went off the air and wfan which is a sports station went on the air.
If WNBC was owned by Radio One now Urban One the station would moved up to 1050 and become a CHUrban station as The New Power 105 WNBC, New York's true Power station!
True @@EllisFeaster but what if Radio One now Urban One talk to NBC about keep the WNBC call letters for 1050 AM, then there is hope for WNBC TV and AM plus WNBC will be a powerful force unlike nothing anything that New York saw.
@@VBaskin2010 WNBC TV would never allow that. If you want to imagine that in imaginary world, you can do that. But I work in the real world, where that would never happen.
That's where you're wrong @@EllisFeaster because i say "What if?.." as if WNBC-AM gets a 2nd chance by Radio One back when they were a radio company they would choose 1050 as NBC-AM's new home in 1988, plus Cathy Hughes really want to bring a Radio One station in New York so if GE could focused on WNBC-TV then Radio One could focused on WNBC-AM at their new dial 1050 and becomes The Big Apple's 1st ever AM stereo CHUrban/Crossover station. That's it.
why did wnbc go off in the first place/ i mean it sounds like the people were very sad when wnbc went bye bye i was upset when wcau fm went bye bye whet to wogl. then i began to like it.
NBC's parent company RCA was bought by GE _solely_ for the NBC TV network. The rest of the company, NBC Radio included, was torn up and sold for parts. Plus Westwood One already purchased a controlling interest in WNEW 1130, they wouldn't have been able to buy WNBC-AM's intellectual property even if they wanted to.

Upson Pratt I listened to Coast to Coast AM about 25 years ago. The concept was fresh, and it was different than anything on Talkradio. I stopped listening around 2005, when it was the same guests, the same topics, the came conspiracy theories. I was bored and haven’t listened since.

Vaughn Baskin if NBC had sold it to radio one, they would never be allowed to use the calls WNBC so long as NBC still owned WNBC 4.

NBC wanted out of the radio business, & sold the station to Emmis. Emmis wanted a better signal for it's sports station at 1050. It was a sad day.

wnbc and wfan have been at 660 on am.
Pete Franklin was an absolute legend in Cleveland, but it just didn't work in the Big Apple at all.
Was that due to his personality?

i wasn.t happy that wnbc went off the air because i liked it a lot.i guess the reason it went off the air is it didn.t make enough money.
It made money. The reason it went off was because NBC wanted out of radio, and wanted to focus on TV.
wnbc 660 am
no more wnbc.it is gone.
i liked wnbc.
Sorry, but I don't share in the enthusiasm here...sports radio, to me, is a complete waste of electricity.
wannawatchu66 It’s definitely not for everyone, but the people who listen, love it, and they are the intended target.

Upson Pratt I also miss Art. I felt like that show was on the edge. Now it just sounds like a trip through the twilight Zone.
