In 2020 I bought one of each. I took the Outback and wife got the Forrester. Neither lack in daily driven power and both have proven themselves in the high level snowbelt-Northern MN. I don't like the touch screen on the new Outback and hate the start stop feature. The Outback has tons of space inside and much nicer ride plus a nice quieter ride. As for the new Turbo, now you have a moving feature that maybe troublesome.

They also revamped the infotainment and made it easier to get quick access to things like start/stop (now right at the bottom of the main screen). The added power of the turbo is nice but really not required. Despite the advertised 3mph difference between engines it is actually much more significant than that. The Forester Sport is very nice and was my second choice to thew Outback Limited.

We settle on a 2021 Outback Touring XT but I have to say, the new Subarus have so many electrical issues that I regret buying it. My dad also has a 2020 Outback and he's now having many of the same issues electrical-wise. My family has had 5 Subarus total and I have to say, Subaru has a lot of work to do to fix these problems. I just found out they are now in two class-action lawsuits because of it. Hopefully, they come out with some serious updates to fix these...
Without specifying type electrical issues makes us wonder if you really have Subaru. I am on my second Subaru outback no issues with first one, drove it for 15 years, and second one 2021 no issue so far.
Only reason my 06 outback isn't on the road is because someone hit it, only after I had it back to "new" condition with exceptions to minor cosmetics 😭
Understanding the pedal pressure is important for this feature. There's a fine line that is the difference between engaging it and not. And if it happens to disengage, you can always be better about timing your starts at traffic lights by paying attention to cross traffic.

Have been running the '20 Forester sport for a year now, and I love it! Has gotten me across the country in all weather conditions with ease. Comfortable to drive, decent power, and I agree with the head unit usage on the Forester is great. And along with the various options you have for cargo room and storage, makes for a great all-around choice for anyone looking for an all-wheel drive reliable vehicle.
Update regarding the stop/start system: My wife and I ordered a 23 Forester Limited that we are picking up tomorrow. The dealer only had one for test driving but if you wanted one you had to order. The 23 had a simple button right on the dash for disabling the start stop system. No digging through menus on an infotainment system are needed. Also as a side note, as an older person the more simple controls and larger windows are a huge plus over the Outback. Something I didn’t care about as a younger person.
I had an extremely difficult time deciding between these two cars. I ended up getting a 2022 outback premium with all avaliable options for the trim level. I just wish the outback had a sport trim like the forester. I'm sure I'm not the only one who didn't want to spend the extra money for the turbo engine, but wanted the blacked out trim.

My dog picked the Outback due to the rear window that rolls down all the way into the door. The Forester's rear glass sticks up about 4 inches. But, I too hate the touchscreen, so going with a CPO 2019 Outback Limited.
One of my favorite things upgrading from a Crosstrek to an Outback is being able to fit my 9’ surfboard inside. Avoiding the hassle of strapping it on and off the roof each time is a big deal.

@@darlingowura468 it was great. Checked all the boxes for us. Did about 6k miles in road trips with my wife, two kids, and my brother. It was really fun to drive, it was quick. Unfortunately, it was totaled out. Some guy went too fast around a corner and slammed into it while it was parked. And pushed it about 10 feet up a a curb. Luckily no one was in it, and we got a lot back front when insurance because of crazy car prices. Cost of ownership was only like 2.5k for 18 months after settlement. We would buy it again but prices have gone up on them. So we’re waiting a bit.
We have a 2019 Outback and just ordered the Forester. While the Outback is great it is too bouncy, windshield and ceiling feel too close, and outward visibility is not great. The Forester is noisier and buffets in sidewinds but the control panel, seat height and universal layout (like our Impreza) is too appealing to pass up.
test drove both Outback and Forester - we both loved the Forester visibility vs the Outback; we've loved our Forster - and really appreciate the fuel economy the CVT enables for this size of a vehicle, and its special drive mode on the wheels really does work on icing roads
We are on our 4th subaru and presently own a 2019 forester sport. The only item I have reservations about is the cvt. It seems that what is good for japan is not good for America as they have cvt fluid change times but tell us that the cvt's fluid is lifetime. I believe we all agree that there is no fluid that will last a lifetime. I wish japan would revisit this situation and initiate fluid change times for American subaru's.
I've been researching this as i consider a Subaru purchase and i've come to the conclusion it would be advantageous to change fluid every 30,000 to 50,000 miles depending on your specific driving conditions
Yes, in the UK id go for the Outback only because its got the biggest engine they do here, but it would be the outgoing model, the new one is a joke of a price.
@@anamarier4791 I went to a subaru dealership, but my credit wasn't good enough for a new one and I'm paying 20% interest with $2500 down .so I'm paying $650 a month 🤯
I like luxury cars but need my car to also be a capable tool. My 2020 Subaru Outback Touring XT was a great pick for me. I'm 1 year in and could not be happier. Honestly it feels more luxury than mid level Mercedes at half the cost. And is still able to do most things you ask of it from snow to light offroad. Edit: when I say luxury I mean good looking interior... the CVT fake shifting and turbo wine feels less than awesome. But all subarus other than the WRX feel a little disappointing in the vroom vroom.
One touch to turn off auto start stop with the update available recently. It’s on the main screen at the bottom left. First place you would naturally touch..
I never understood how reviews constantly complain about power. 182hp is more than enough. Want power or performance? Get a Porsche Machan. Know one can use any cars full potential as far as it's performance not on American roads/streets. Most who buy high powered cars usually just rev the engine to show how powerful the car is but never out on the road. 500hp in a car is useless since you'll never use a fraction of that HP on the streets. Unless you drag it. Forester and Outback are built for a certain demographic just a Corvette is for certain demographic.
Is it true the Outback has a towing capacity of 3000#, compared to Foresters 1500#? This could be a selling point between the two. Does the Outback have a beefed up C.V.T? They share the same power plant in 2.5 H-4. Why the different towing capacity?
The Outback w/the 2.5L engine (non-turbo) has a 2700 lb towing capacity. The Outback XT w/the turbo has a 3500 lb towing capacity. I have an '18 Forester touring (non-turbo), and I love it, but I'm seriously mulling over switching to the '21 Outback Touring XT - towing capacity, cargo space, heated AND ventilated front seats, and the 180 front camera have pretty well snagged me. I'd go to the Ascent (5000 lb towing capacity), but it is missing some of the things I can get in the Outback Touring XT for a lower cost. If we get a tiny travel trailer, I can handle it in the Outback, if we get one a little over 5000 lbs, my husband's truck can handle that.
@@wendymontie5660 thanks Wendy. I currently have 2015 Crosstrek which I tow a small utility trailer. Want to stay in the Subaru family to pull a larger trailer like a Hiker style to go out west. Leaning towards Outback.
I've never understood why Subaru offers 2 such similar cars, I reckon they could combine the 2 models, and offer a cheaper price with the savings (and many less confused customers).
They really aren't that similar. The rear opening height of the Outback is only 29", and it's over 30" on the Forster. I prefer the shape and height of the Forester's cargo space over the Outback.
Their difference is clear once you get in them. My wife and I test drove both and outback is just a longer and lower car. Forrester feels just right by comparison, taller driving position with clear visibility and perfectly maneuverable size.
I bought the Outback because I like getting away and go car camping. I'm 6 feet and I can rollout an air mattress with a sleeping bag in the back and still have room for camping equipment. Now if they can put in a toilet, I would be very happy. I know, think portable. LOL
My daughter saved $ for her 1st car and had her heart set on the Forester. However once she sat in it she found the seat ‘wings’ very uncomfortable and compressing. She’s a tall curvy girl and ended up with the Outback for hip and boob room though she prefers the Forester headroom.
@@oddities-whatnot because like other people here who are telling people they "don't know" she's telling everyone how much she loves her Outback since the video is about the difference between the two and at the end of the video he asks everyone to leave comments if they have one of the two telling him what they like or don't like about them. Quit trying to be a smart aleck.
I've had 4 Outbacks. 1999 and 2005 with 5-speed manual. Slow. 2012 with CVT. Slooooow. Got a 2020 Outback XT (turbo) - best handling, riding, accelerating of all by far. My wife has the 6 cylinder Legacy 3.5R (2016) - sorry they dropped that engine but I think the turbo is a good alternative.
think about price. For what I got on my new Outback I could have gotten many more options on the Forester. Do your homework, look at trims and options, then make your choice.
I am struggling between the two models, love the big windows, panoramic moon roof and physical knobs and dual mode at a lower cost. However, I prefer the look of the outback, more storage, and how it drives. And isn't the drive half the battle in purchasing a car (despite it is extremely more costly to get the moon/roof and leather compared to a fully loaded forester. The long distance trip is really one of my concerns which I have not been able to find a review or comparison on how the forester drives long distance. Obviously, weight and towing become an issue on both and the reaction of engine....
The Forester is superior to the Outback 2.5 which just feels underpowered. If you are looking at the 2.4 turbo engine though then I'd have to give the edge to the Outback based strictly on driving feel.
I like the Outback at first too.. No way now.. The Forester is designed wheels deferential and size to haul a larger load then the Outback.. It's maybe the same engine but it's the design and strength of the body to move something.. Honestly Turbo has nothing to do with it.. Strength integrity in the body tows stuff. Do I want to tow with either of them... I rather have a v6.. then a 4.. The Forester I have will tow better then any v6 out there.. It's all about the design.. Honestly ..2 really great looking vehicles.. Towing ..no Question.. Forester.. I'm a male... My Foresters a women.. I hook nothing up to her with out asking after making love to her first.. I'm just simple nobody man.. She was worth it..
I test drove both and I prefer the outback. Also contrary to what we think with the engine power the outback is more aerodynamic and equally quick. Outback is longer and more roomy.
I got the Forester because I didnt want to spend what a turbo Outback costs. And without the turbo the Outback feels more underpowered than the Forester. Makes sense since the Outback is larger and heavier but with that same engine. Also the Forster is THE best car for visibility. Safety also comes from driving, not just construction. Being able to see better to avoid accidents makes Forster safer in my book.
Have watched several reviews, comparisons or straight pitches and yours is the best. Great presentation. Going to be test driving the Outback, Forester and Volvo CX60 in a couple weeks. We'll see.... My previous automobiles have been currently, the Honda Accord, then before that, the Mercury Mountaineer and before that, the Ford Bronco.(Never wanted to get rid of the Mountaineer but wife pressured me into it. Loved the Mountaineer). I want to get back into a SUV and at this stage of life, don't need the biggest so am looking at mid-size. Considering the Ford Echo primarily because it is American made. Now you know everything.
Thank you very much! Let me know what you think of the Forester and Outback. If you prefer American made, the Ford Escape Hybrid is a great SUV. The new Bronco Sport might also interest you. I haven't driven one yet, but I here it is basically a boxy Ford Escape.
(the CVT parts you keep showing are from an AISIN not a Subaru Lineartronic which does not use that component set. The lineartronic is quite reliable.)
Having owned both, the Outback has a noticeably more comfortable seat and better ride quality. The Outback Touchscreen takes some getting used to. The Forester has more ease of use in that regard
Great recommendations (I own a 2020 Outback) and I agree with almost everything you pointed out..Except: When you use the engine start/stop defeat button a few times it places it at the bottom of the screen like a shortcut and is available on the main screen, no need to go into the system. Surprised you did not know that.
Bought a 2020 outback and the battery died and car broke down. Common problem for new Outback’s, crappy batteries. Would not take a charge. Replaced the battery so we could drive the car ASAP. Subaru would not compensate for the battery, despite a 3 year warranty. I guess they prefer you to drop your plans for the day, call a tow truck, wait for them to repair it, then drive back home later that night.
@@terry58501 honestly it's the base but i like it as my very first outback, ill probably upgrade in a few years anyway for the higher trim...but right now im not really missing anything with having the base trim...

Love my '21 Onyx XT. Overall a better vehicle than my previous 19 Forester Sport. I loved the Sport but the Outback has a far more comfortable seat and a smoother ride. The Turbo is icing on the cake
Last year my wife’s Camry needed to be replaced so we bought a new Outback. We love the Outback’s traction on all road conditions, so we bought a Forester Touring today to replace my 12 year old Rav.
@@TheDon6 I like the Forester more. Yes I miss the 269hp 3.5 V6 from my old Rav, but the Forester has enough pep for my needs. I would buy another Forester over a Rav any day.
@@TheDon6 Now that I’ve had my Forester Touring for a few months and have taken it on a long trip, I enjoy it more than my old Rav. It’s quieter, more comfortable, visibility and traction is superior over the Rav. The heated rear seats are great (according to passengers). I never knew that I needed a heated steering wheel but now I know what I was missing. I would recommend the Forester Touring to anyone who needs a vehicle in the size of the Forester. They have more room than it looks like it would have.
Subaru has fixed the auto stop start in US market but putting the button right on the front screen. It seem like you’re in Canada so I’m not sure if it has been fix over there. Also there isn’t much of a learning curve on the legacy/outback infotainment system at all, it’s straight forward and easy to understand, it’s like an iPad. The foresters simplicity might win the day for some but the legacy/outback has a much more expensive looking interior and loads more features if you up for the XT touring like I did. Thank for the video!!
The Outback may have more overall interior space, but the forester is supposed to have more passenger space. Taller drivers like me (6’4”) are probably more comfortable in the forester. My brothers Outback felt a little tighter than I wanted when I drove it. I just wish the Ascent was as reliable as the other Subarus.
I used to want the crosstrek, but after my brother purchased one, I noticed the lack of space it had. During my stint with Covid I watched videos like this on the Outback and found it more compatible with my needs with having two kids and all the fun things that come with that. That being said, my choice would be the Outback for the power options and cargo space
Any consideration for fuel economy? Or according to some lack of it😉👍 (as far as I was told 11-13l/100km/62miles it's something to expect from 2.0 turbo,2.4 turbo petrols)
People moan about lack of turbos and CVTs etc but Subaru are not stupid. They are looking at the bigger picture. The cars are designed for long lasting, safe and reliable ownership with smooth comfortable driving at speed limits. All the haters are just throwing the toys out the pram because they havnt moved with the times. Stuck in the past with their thirsty blue Impreza.
A concentrated driver only pays attention to the upper part of display screen so the 11 inch screen of outback becomes less adavantagenous. The engine sound of outback is louder than forester from my personal test drives.
Ive had Subaru Outbacks for 20 years. They hug the road better than a Forester and they have more space, which is great for carrying ladders amd equipment. Also, they look sleeker, not so bulky as the Forester. The tow capacity is much greater in the Outback, good for towing a small boat, ATV, or tent.
It was a tough choice for me, but I went with the Outback because of more space in the second row - great if you’re driving kids with car seats - and more room in the back for all their stuff for school and sports. Overall better if you’re looking for a family car, but don’t want to pay for a bigger SUV, like the Ascent.
I dont have a dog, I dont need a dog, why would I get a dog ? It would not add anything to my life. At least I dont have to look after one. Couldnt be doing with that.
Base legacy at invoice is the best value in the whole lineup and the best vehicle offered by Subaru. The most versatile and dependable is the crosstrek with the manual transmission. Between the two in the video the forester is like a glass house so visibility and safety are great and therefore for most that is a better choice. It’s also made in Japan where q.c. Is much better than American q.c.
The Outback is definitely more comfortable in the seats and on the road. I owned the Forester Sport which was nice, but the Outback is very noticeably more comfortable. Especially for long trips
Another issue is that to get the dual x mode function, you have to go up to the much more expensive Onxy model. I would have gone with the outback for its higher towing rating and extra box length and smidgen more hip room....but that jump was $6 ot $7 k more??
Forester lost ALL its glory after the 2003-2009 models. From a beautiful rugged station wagon it became a no personality “me too design” SUV. Taller than the previous models for no reason, boxy and ugly. Im on my 6th Subaru, of which on my second forester.
Actually I agree with you. The latest version is a millennials wet dream. Overstyled pretentious fashion car, although underneath its a tough machine but the fact is Subaru needs to do this in order to appeal to buyers other than farmers. The older Foresters were fantastic.
@@oddities-whatnot The new Outback is better than the forester in styling, looks more like a real station wagon, has the ground clearance, however, it is aiming at different target groups (I suppose), since it is considerably more expensive. It’s more like the perfect present to the wife so she can show off at the mall and forget, momentarily at least, her husband’s affair with his blonde secretary...

Luckily no one was in it, and we got a lot back front when insurance because of crazy car prices. Cost of ownership was only like 2.5k for 18 months after settlement. We would buy it again but prices have gone up on them. So we’re waiting a bit.
Buy Forester and save money ( 50k for Forester and 80k for Outback in my country ) . Thanks.
I have a 2021 Outback Premium. The start/stop system has it's own button
@@bobrich1950 Thanks for your support on this topic Rich. Have a nice day.
Outback has better headlights (SRH, Sterring Responsive Headlights) and the 2.5 is fast too, at sea level (To me at least. 😂)
Yes, in the UK id go for the Outback only because its got the biggest engine they do here, but it would be the outgoing model, the new one is a joke of a price.

I'm looking to purchase a car soon AND I loved how clear this video's explanation of the differences between these 2 SUV's
I prefer the Forester for city driving and the occasional weekends out of town.
Currently driving Outback #6.
One touch to turn off auto start stop with the update available recently. It’s on the main screen at the bottom left. First place you would naturally touch..
My early production tester didn't have that! Great to hear they added it.
Forester has better visibility and Outback has XT. Can't get both. I think this is just Subaru's marketing strategy.
I agree! I’m in the process of selecting/buying my first Subaru and I can’t seem to make up my mind in between these two!
I bought a horse. Subarus made it close though.
My husband suprised me with the 2021 Outback Limited...2 days, ago!! It's a beautiful vehicle! Fancy!!
Bet he got head that night

I've had 4 Outbacks. 1999 and 2005 with 5-speed manual. Slow. 2012 with CVT. Slooooow. Got a 2020 Outback XT (turbo) - best handling, riding, accelerating of all by far. My wife has the 6 cylinder Legacy 3.5R (2016) - sorry they dropped that engine but I think the turbo is a good alternative.
Fantastic comparison video! I've been considering both models...so this is exactly the kind of content I am seeking. Thank you!
Thank you very much!
think about price.
Outback
I test drove both and I prefer the outback. Also contrary to what we think with the engine power the outback is more aerodynamic and equally quick. Outback is longer and more roomy.
@@lowlifeangler I respect your comment.
Trick question: correct answer is 2017 Forester XT in Pearl White (C'mon Subaru, get with the program, where's the updated Forester XT?)
I haven't driven one yet, but I here it is basically a boxy Ford Escape.
the outback can also tow 2700 pound. forester is 1500 unless you get the new wilderness model.
(the CVT parts you keep showing are from an AISIN not a Subaru Lineartronic which does not use that component set. The lineartronic is quite reliable.)
Outback tracks better and feels better on highway.
Well done, very helpful. I am going with the Forester.
We've had our Forrester since 2016 and we're still very happy with it.
We chose the Forester. But Outback is,a great vehicle as,well.
Having owned both, the Outback has a noticeably more comfortable seat and better ride quality. The Outback Touchscreen takes some getting used to. The Forester has more ease of use in that regard
What does everybody mean about the stop start mechanism I don't even know what that is!
@@sarahsundstrom1425 does Subaru have it? It’s when you stop, the engine shuts of. When you pull leg off the brake engine starts

Interesting to know that. Ive not tested either of them yet although was at a dealer having a look yesterday.
Definitely! My OnyxXT is way more comfortable than my Forester Sport was
I'm driving my 2010 Subaru Outback with 123,000 miles on it and its still going strong and driving great!
Subaru you need a plug in hybrid with 300+ hp !! These are good cars but painfully slow and mediocre mpg!
My wife and I both LOVE the Napa brown leather interior on the Touring edition.
Foresters are typically less expensive than Outbacks at the same trim level.

The heated rear seats are great (according to passengers). I never knew that I needed a heated steering wheel but now I know what I was missing.
I would recommend the Forester Touring to anyone who needs a vehicle in the size of the Forester. They have more room than it looks like it would have.
@@Doc1855 thanks for the update! I’m scared to get a Subaru lol
Hybrid models are the ones to have. Get on with it Subaru.

Great looking crossovers, but I hate that cvt. Also I wish they would get rid of stop/start, what a stupid option that is.

I’m glad I chose the Forester XT to share the moments of my life.
Any consideration for fuel economy? Or according to some lack of it😉👍 (as far as I was told 11-13l/100km/62miles it's something to expect from 2.0 turbo,2.4 turbo petrols)
Theres a few left in the UK, but our petrol is expensive and the XT economy round town is rubbish.
Must be outback XT, 2.5NA so slow not even slow, it’s toooo slow on the high way for merging

@@samzsong4652 you’re welcome samzee. The Germans get it. My Porsche has about 100 physical buttons, much better and safer. Same as a fighter jet.
Point of clarification Subaru claims that 97% of their vehicles bought in the last 10 years are still on the road.
I have a 2007 forester with 158000 miles, still drives well
The Forester is the one for me.
When you think 2022 model will be out all the cars are 2021
A concentrated driver only pays attention to the upper part of display screen so the 11 inch screen of outback becomes less adavantagenous. The engine sound of outback is louder than forester from my personal test drives.
I agree I prefer the Forester overall
Yeah the Outback is noticeably roomier. Many buy it for that bonus alone.
The Forester is taller. Therfore allowing more space for larger items. The dog cage fits better.
I dont have a dog, I dont need a dog, why would I get a dog ? It would not add anything to my life. At least I dont have to look after one. Couldnt be doing with that.
Yep! You can slide a 500/30" tall crate right in the back door of the Forester, and can't do that on the outback.
The Outback software was updated and now you can turn the stop start off from the home screen.
Does that turn it off permanently or just until you turn the car off and restart it again?
Does that turn it off for good or j
@@peterboesel3266 You need to turn it off every time you start the car. I think it has to do with the emissions testing.
Forester built in Japan. Outback built in USA.🤔

I thing it is the outback. It is more wider and longer.
The Outback is definitely more comfortable in the seats and on the road. I owned the Forester Sport which was nice, but the Outback is very noticeably more comfortable. Especially for long trips
A great video for people who are battling between the two models

Have been running the '20 Forester sport for a year now, and I love it
I love my Forester Sport! It's also my second Forester. Accelerating from 60km/h to 100km/h when merging on a highway is so effortless.
It has good acceleration? I heard it's slow. I'm considering buying one
@@grovdogg19 I don't know about other trims but my Forester Sport has "Sport Mode" which makes accelerating quite effortless.
2021 Outback Xt for me sold my 09 wrx after buying my outback also had a 2019 crosstrek 6speed
Another issue is that to get the dual x mode function, you have to go up to the much more expensive Onxy model. I would have gone with the outback for its higher towing rating and extra box length and smidgen more hip room....but that jump was $6 ot $7 k more??
I had the Forester Sport and traded it in for the Onyx and have absolutely zero regrets
