Walking to Rome on the Via Francigena 20: Slogging Along the Longest Trail

San Quirico to Radicofani (1 day; 33.5km)
The longest day takes us through remote, sometimes steeply rolling fields, past distant hill towns. There are surprises, like the sweet thermal baths of Bagno Vignoli and, on one windswept summit, a pilgrimage rest spot that, although unhosted, offers steamed coffee and yummy edibles. Our destination, on a rocky cliff high above the plains around it, is a remarkable multi-levelled town with winding cobbled streets and old stone, flower-adorned buildings.
