Hi Suzanne, In all truthfulness they are totally unnecessary, (as are most art materials). I'm terrible & spend all my money on art supplies. I absolutely love the pencils but definitely go in & out of phases when I use them. I'm using them quite a bit at the moment because of the season.... If you do lots of sketching & want a change they are a solid product, the colours perhaps a little restrictive (if you want an all rounder go for something else).
