"This l’il piece of music was written in tribute to NASA's Mars Rover, "Opportunity", which after nearly fifteen years of Mars exploration, lost communication with NASA due to a gnarly Mars-wide dust storm. "Opportunity" and its twin, "Spirit", launched back in the Summer of 2003 and were sent to spend about 90 days exploring the mysterious red planet. Both blew their mission expectations out of the water: "Spirit" lived a good 6-year robot life and retired in 2019 and "Oppy" was able to carry on for nearly 15 years in total. Bravo! Together, they sent back hundreds of thousands of images of Mars. Since the great Mars dust storm in August 2018, mission control could no longer communicate with Opportunity. The Opportunity mission control team sent a slew of recovery commands and messages and even tried to beam some music to Oppy in an effort to wake it back up. Unfortunately, there was no response and NASA declared Opportunity "Mission Complete" on February 13th, 2019.” ―Ryan O'Neal, Sleeping At Last

Somehow, when i heard about the rover dying, one of my first thoughts was "I hope Sleeping at last will probably tribute it." And oh my goodness i was expecting beauty but nothing to this scale

I am so incredibly happy I discovered Ryan's music back in November 2017. The first song of his that I ever heard was "Saturn". When I first heard it, and I still think so, I thought it was the most beutiful song I had ever heard. It has grown to mean a lot to me ("Six" as well, in fact!). I sometimes even like to fall asleep to it. All of his music is just so calming, thoughtful, passionate, inspiring and just so full of emotion. I actually write music and songs myself, and Ryan is one of the people that inspired me to finally build the courage to go out there and play for people. He is one of the artists that showed me just how important it is to put all your emotion and passion into what you create, because it's then - then, you create, give life, to something truly special. I hope to one day inspire someone like he inspired me - like they all did. And, I just want to thank him for doing what he does, because it's just so incredibly important and wonderful. I love his music, it's ... yeah. I am speechless. Now, if you will excuse me, I will go gaze at the full moon whilst listening to this masterpeace. Yes, same. Saturn was the first song I heard and Oceans. I marvelled at both of them, but Saturn most of all. I thought it was all instrumentals...and then minutes into the song came the words and that moment when I realized there were words to that wonderful music and the meaning...ugh. It was such a beautiful, heart-rending experience.
@@hoshiia8116 that's a perfect description! That's exactly how I felt as well! I have had many moments with this song. I also like to just go outside and stare at the stars, whilst listening to it. I live in a small place in Norway, so there aren't many citylights to overwhelm the stars. And when it's really dark and cold, and the northern lights starts to dance ... wow. Words can't describe it. But "Saturn" can.

I knew Ryan would deliver, and he always does. A beautiful tribute to Oppy's 15+ years of service. Farewell and Godspeed, Oppy, you've made us proud.
Ryan has such a range in his art. Very talented musician.
even tho there were no lyrics i could picture everything so clearly. the whole story was before my eyes and so full of love and emotional. all that we have achieved. so beautiful. Ryan is truly from outer space.

This song is absolutely wonderful and has so much emotion. I really love Sleeping at Last’s work because he is so capable of giving his music so much feeling. Absolutely love this one!
I love all of Ryan’s work, but wow. All of the tributes to spacecraft and space phenomena turn out amazing
When you start to listen to this song and you start telling yourself the last words of Opportunity you start to curl up and cry

Oh hey, I wrote a song abt Opportunity as well! Sleeping At Last always blows these orchestral compositions out of the water, I especially love the pizzicato section at 1:12... it's so surreal and delicate :)

This is such a nice piece. It seems to reflect the story, a hopeful little robot doing its job, a light tune with a bit of a sad undertone to it
