"Besichtigen" is used often for sights and museums :) Wir besichtigen heute den Eifelturm. It comes from "Sicht" = Sight

I am not sure if I got your question right but to decide wether to use ss or ß (as in reißen) you look at the vocals before the ss/ß. The basic rule is to use the ß when you have a double vocal like "eu" "ei" "au" etc.

I really love your "american" consonants. The most tingly content for me on youtube. A general tip I can give you is, that the vocal before a double consonant (tt, ss, mm etc.) is very short in pronounciation. (I am not an english native, so I am sorry if its not clear what I am trying to convey.)

Ich gehe in ein Museum, um es zu besichtigen, und ich vergesse nicht die richtige Kommasetzung bei einem Infinitiv mit zu. ;-)
