My undergrad is in ecology and I studied lichen pretty indepth. I'm super excited to see more studies on this amazing indicator species! Its really shocking to me how under studied it is, and I believe there are lots of secrets they hold! ❤
"There are huge non climate effects of carbon dioxide which are overwhelmingly favorable which are not taken into account. To me that's the main issue that the earth is actually growing greener. This has been actually measured from satellites the whole earth is growing greener as a result of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. So it's increasing agricultural yields, it's increasing the forests, it's increasing all kinds of growth in the biological world and that's more important and more certain than the effects on climate." ~Freeman Dyson, Institute of Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey.
The video doesn't go into any detail on the process that occurs when the lichen is exposed to higher levels of pollution. What pollutant is the cause of the changes? The only thing said was that it has to do with nitrogen? Is it impacted by an imbalance of nitrogen in the air (off from the standard 78% normally found in the atmosphere,) does it have to do with exposure to NOx, or is it something else?

I am a lichen nerd, love them. Thanks, very nice
I'm the producer and yeah, me too. #lichennerd
I moved to Oregon recently from SoCal and have fallen in love with the lichen I see! It makes everything look so enchanting
Really incredible video. Thank you!
Thank you! -Ed
I recognize the coral reefs of the air.
They ARE beautiful
I learned something today.
Very interesting, more please!
Lichen and mushrooms, two of my favorite things. Oh, and moss. Didn't know they tell pollution levels.
