You are so right my brother! When I was an apprentice electrician I was treated with nothing but contempt. I learned to keep my pie hole shut and man up and take it. When I became a journeyman I treated my apprentices with kindness but when they goofed up on something I let them know how they really screwed up and they could get themselves killed, but I always let them know the reason I was chewing them out was for their own safety. I am now retired but I was always proud to see these apprentices take the exam and become journeyman electricians! That trade has served me very well over the years and I was proud to be a heavy industrial journeyman electrician. I sure miss it!

My first job was a shitshow with my coworkers literally cursing me out for not being fast enough to the point where the project manager actually called me personally to apologize for their unprofessional behavior, on my FIRST DAY. But then my lead tech put it to me this way: "Work harder on yourself than your job, and you'll be successful."
I had my 1st day work experience and some stupid things I did was give a guy a light switch instead of the actual light he asked for , but the people I worked with knew it was my first day and I can make mistakes , bad luck being with the wrong people
I don't talk much. If I have a question I research it at home. When at work, I'm either working as hard and fast as possible, or I'm thinking ahead of time what the journeyman will need and getting it before they even think to shout the command. I got 2 raises in 4 months. Started at 19 now I'm making 35 because of how much of an impact I make by learning so much and doing so much and thinking so far ahead.
This is pretty good advice for any job. I have always said there are 2 types of people on the job. Those that make themselves look good by bringing teammates up with them. Then there's the guy who tries to look good by making everybody else look bad. Be the first guy. It will pay off in the end.

Wow, everything you said I am going through right now at my job! It's hard to keep a positive attitude when the guys on the job make you feel worthless to them. I just started out with no experience 3 months ago and I feel I have grown leaps and bounds since day one. I've even been given a raise already. This last week I've been given a hard time and was questioned as to what I had accomplished the last two hours the day before. It through me for a loop as I am always keeping busy. I never stand around and look for something to do and if I can't find anything to do I ask what's next. I try and push myself to go faster while still trying to do good quality work and I find I make more mistakes. I was told focus on doing things right and speed will follow but now they are telling me to speed things up! It's very frustrating!
ive never been an electrician but i used to be a contractor (cultured marble install) and when i started out my boss was just like your saying... i could be outside all day busting ass burning myself out on everything i did and my boss would come out yelling at me making me feel worthless. Then i would see the other contractors helpers straight up dragging ass at the shop in the morning. I just focused on improving myself and tried my best to ignore my alcoholic bosses bullshit and 1 year later i was contracting for the same company he was! Just stick with it dude and focus on improving yourself.bosses will always try to push you farther for more money in their pocket, and you will probably catch yourself wanting to once you have a helper.

I worked for over 38 years as a construction electrician, and I can count on one hand the good guys I worked with. I'm sure there are rotten people in every line of work but I am just talking about this line of work. If a person lives long enough they will be able to see just how low some people are. Good video, yes there is always something to do, (even if it's just to clean up) .
Lots of good advice here for beginners or even seasoned guys, One thing I can add to that is once you leave work leave work problems at work if you bring them home they will become home problems. Lots of good advice in any trade or any job for that matter.

Great video...I'm a woman apprentice on an all dude crew. I have had to learn to take some teasing but I am all about asking questions and on my day off watching videos about electricity. Ultimately at the end of the day we are like family...hustling together to get the job done and at the end of the week we have a paycheck that looks pretty good. The best thing almost all of the journeymen have told me during my first few weeks was....there was a time when I knew only about as much as you do now. One master electrician told me...when he started out, the only tools he could identify by name were a flat and phillips head screwdriver. They make me feel good...also biggest lesson....get it done neat....speed will come with time but neat/accurate is the foundation of a good electrician.
My boss would work until midnight everyday if he could. Fuck that, I have a life outside of this shit. I'm a journeyman, but I do not live for this shit. Good thing my boss has been my friend since we were kids, I tell him to fuck off, I'm going home.... and we do.
I’m in the IBEW. OT is not mandatory in my local, but other locals may have their contract structured differently. Non-union I would guess varies company to company and maybe project to project. And maybe even person to person.
I have over a month in my new job as a commercial apprentice I love it, but there are times where I simply don't think I'm cut out to be an electrician.
What was stressful for me was being a green electrician put in charge of a bunch of guys who didn’t speak English. They were paid by each light they installed in the overhead of a drug store. Although they were very fast, the work was very shotty; wire was not properly secured into the tops of the light fixtures; & I found lots of arcing in the overheads above the false ceiling. I guess they were not used to someone calling on their mistakes. As a result, my boss fired me because these guys did not like working with me. Good grief ! 🤨

Took a long time to get licenced, now I'm licenced in two countries. Started my apprenticeship in the states with an amazing company. Had to move because of immigration issues. Had to do my apprenticeship all over again in Canada. Main thing is be humble and check any ego atvthd door. Enough said, I treat my apprentices like my kids, joking when needed, father figure when needed. Great vid by the way
All good advice, definitely don't take things personally. I advise my new guys of my attitude levels. I teach on the job too. My first level is getting to know them and see what kind of experience they have with tools. Level two is starting with the basic skills and introduction to material and how to do things. Level three is building on the basics to more advanced skills and knowledge. Show them, let them take a turn at it, monitor and give pointers, then give them a small area at first to do. Evaluate occasionally but don't stand over them.
wow, everything you talked about in this video is exactly what I go through at my construction job especially the " always something to do" nobody tells me but I learned how to look "busy" when work is slow or when the job is complete and there's nothing else to do. You're not crucified as bad when you're hustling WITH the guys. The skilled trades is very interesting career

Im only getting like 3 to 5 hours per day because of the holidays i guess its slow so ive been discouraged and have thought about giving up on this particular job but i really like this trade so im glad to have found this video.

If you choose to be an electrician you're going to learn a lot about a lot of things, but being a super human can set you apart from most people. If you stay off drugs, and master the trade you can do really well in business. Just make sure you're willing to sacrifice what it takes to achieve it. It takes a lot of energy during the work day especially for apprentices. Make sure you take good care of yourself, so that way when you get off work you still have stamina to take care of your family. Good luck to you.
I feel you on those points. I'm really careful with my diet and am currently going to the gym frequently. As for drugs and alcohol, I have no interest in them besides for the occasional beer. I realised I'm pretty introvert and been doing my apprenticeship for about 5 weeks now. As you get comfortable you will learn when to come out of your shell as time goes by. But in the long run if you want to run your own business and what not your gonna have to work on talking to people and be a bit more out going

If you don't accept this opportunity you've been given, you may not be given another. Whether it is low pay and harder work, it is all experience and a start for a career option you'll have forever 👍

Craig, I would say that if you want to be in construction, and you have what it takes to earn your journeyman license do it. You can go your whole life working for a company and be well off, or If later you decide that you want do something less labor intense you could always become a general contractor. In commercial electric.. Electricians are on the job from the projects start to the projects finish, so you'll be exposed to every stage of construction. I think I would make a fine GC even though that's not my current career path. 97% of people have to choose a career at some point, and I don't think being an electrician is a bad deal if you make good choices in life. Ultimately its for you decide because it's your life, and I want to encourage everyone to be responsible for what they choose to do.

Is overtime mandatory? I don't mind every now and then having a 60 hour week, but I value my free time.

@@juansaldana84 Been fantastic. Was non union for a while started hating it, joined the union. Was on jobs for Tesla Charging Stations, Nuclear Power Plants, Hershey Candy Plant, and lots of Hospital jobs so far. I love my job.
@@suheilsamih1485 The field is great and yeah it takes some physical work but not back breaking all the time. You pretty much choose, but standing... You usually have to do that the whole shift.

I’m currently an apprentice but man let me tell you, I’ve taken alotta shit from my foreman. I just shut my mouth and accept it. I don’t talk back and I don’t talk shit, but it does get frustrating. I’m very green, have no prior experience, so I get it, I just need to learn to not take it personally

+ZOMBlFY Yeah man, work on becoming a hybrid between an extrovert and a introvert. You can have the best of both worlds. If you have what it takes to be an electrician you can do anything.
I realised I'm pretty introvert and been doing my apprenticeship for about 5 weeks now. As you get comfortable you will learn when to come out of your shell as time goes by. But in the long run if you want to run your own business and what not your gonna have to work on talking to people and be a bit more out going

"take a good dump" lmao , dude i learned electrical from a job corps program and my first day of work my boss says "i need you to "tie in " a couple wires and believe it or not my teacher never taught me none of that......few weeks later i was fired because i kept messing up smh, now im discouraged man my teacher barely had us do hands on because students kept playing around in the labatory so i lost out...
So true,I love to flip greenies shit to see if they got a sense of humor, which is a important job site quality. I'm not an asshole to em, cause I get they got stress learning a new skill, but I need a guy to have fortitude. When a guy gets chapped over job site banter I tell him I mess with guys I like,if they still are easy to anger I pitch em cause that's a sign of a guy who is full of drama and drama slows productivity.

No we need our apprentices to fall in line and not make mistakes that can kill us talking as electrician and that has been a apprentice found a first week apprentice in a 277 panel switching breakers for 110 breaker for temp power told him u can not be in the electrical room without a mechanic and never touch live panels

i have the opportunity to become an apprentice electrician. i have no 0 training in construction or electrical work. i am a hard worker and tend to learn fast, but fear id be wasting my time/the employers time by taking this. any suggestions anybody? is a big opportunity for me but dont want to make the wrong choice.
Austin Anderson I'm only 14/15 but my brother has just accepted an apprenticeship as a builder. I myself, want to become an electrician... If you don't accept this opportunity you've been given, you may not be given another. Whether it is low pay and harder work, it is all experience and a start for a career option you'll have forever 👍

The answer to your question is difficult because anyone can learn how to do electrical work, but yes you do have to have some book smarts to get fully certified, and run a legitimate business. hey S33 Electrical i wanted to ask. i'm leaning towards being an electrician i want it as a career BUT can you be a journeyman electrician your whole electrical career? becuase i don't like the idea of being a master electrican all the things that come with being a master electrician doesn't appeal to me at all. but journeyman fits me will. i would like to hear from you it would be really appreciated
Craig, I would say that if you want to be in construction, and you have what it takes to earn your journeyman license do it. You can go your whole life working for a company and be well off, or If later you decide that you want do something less labor intense you could always become a general contractor. In commercial electric.. Electricians are on the job from the projects start to the projects finish, so you'll be exposed to every stage of construction. I think I would make a fine GC even though that's not my current career path. 97% of people have to choose a career at some point, and I don't think being an electrician is a bad deal if you make good choices in life. Ultimately its for you decide because it's your life, and I want to encourage everyone to be responsible for what they choose to do.
