This project focuses on utilizing Raspberry Pi, a compact computer system, and a webcam to check the vacancy of a parking lot. The communication of Commands and outputs is done via Telegram, an open source Social Networking App which makes creation of bots ( a software application that runs automated tasks over the Internet) possible. The primary area of applications is intended to be in parking lots inside large malls
This project covers two aspects of Engineering:
    IOT (Internet of Things)
Image processing (Edge Detection, in this case)
Raspberry Pi is an open source platform, meaning that its source code is freely available, making it the perfect choice for this project. Because it is open sourced, there is a lot of information pertaining to raspberry pi available on the internet making self learning much easier. I learned Python, a High Level programming language, from RUclips in order to work on this project.
I commenced this project after we spent 30 minutes searching for a vacant parking lot inside a mall. When I searched on the internet for a solution to this issue, I came across the idea of putting Infrared Sensors (IR) in each slot. However, this is an expensive solution , as a large amount of sensors need to be purchased for the application.. It then struck me that if I would be able to utilize the Surveillance cameras already present in the parking lot, it would prove to be a much more cost effective solution. After taking guidance from my IT instructors, I commenced this project.
The first step to be taken after receiving a command to check for vacancy is capturing an image of the model Parking lot, which is taken by the USB Logitech Webcam attached. This image is then processed through the OpenCV library in Java. In this library, the main function of interest is the Canny Algorithm, which uses Gaussian Curves to identify edges of objects in an image and returns an image of only the edges in the form of a white line. The code then checks for the presence of edges in the coordinates of each parking slot. Presence of edges indicates Occupancy of Parking slots, while their absence indicates that it is vacant.

Great job Raj. Truly admirable parking space detection at such a low cost. Hats off to you.

Sir The code u kept at ur blog is used for only four parking slots. Should i have to make the measurements of the parking line? Or it is applicable for any kind of image. How can i make it for 8 parking slots
