Rare interview of Wong Kar Wai talking about the production of As Tears go by, his first feature as a director, released in 1988. He talks about Patrick Tam who helped him in producrion, as well as William Chang and Stanley Kwan. He also mentions how working with Maggie Cheung, Andy Lau and Jacky Cheung was.

Maggie Cheung made this movie! Maggie conveyed an effortless ability to be wide eyed innocent yet filled with depth and passion. What guy wouldnt want her? The violence in the movie was tough for me to withstand, but maggie's feminitiy and softness gave the movie the contrast it needed. Basically, Maggie Cheung is irreplaceable as her heart and spirit touch the audience every time and in every way. No matter who she plays, her spirit shines through.

Maggie cheung didn’t made this movie. You must not know who Andy lau or Jacky cheung is and the caliber of an actor they are in HK. They were far better actor and especially for this film they hammed the movie x10 better. Maggie is barely in the film. She showed up early and left for a long proportion in the middle. Her scene was just sprinkled throughout here and there but it wasn’t even center around her. Even wkw said this movie is what it is today because of Andy lau performance. this film actually center on the brotherhood of the 3 main character struggle in the slums with triad and gangs violence. She was setup to be a cousin but then after was just a throw away love interest just to be there for plot device but there isn’t much to do with her. In the mood for love is the film that Maggie cheung made it good and she was better than tony Leung there and deserve the credit for but there wasn’t enough screen time in as tear go by for her to stole the show. She in it for 20 mins maximum or maybe even less. so this is false !
