    Thanks for not wasting our time by drilling holes

    My wife and I had a similar idea, except mounted outside the cage and a quarter of it cut out down the length of the PVC pipe for their heads and then cutting holes in the caging for their heads and having it mounted to the cage. So basically a 3/4 circle trough. This is even better and surprisingly doesn't take up any room inside the cage and is more similar to the Tupperware containers with holes cut in them everyone loves as a cheap no waste feeder. Only problem with them is they take up more room inside the cage and eggs apparently always get hung up on them.
    This is the perfect combination of those Tupperware container ones with holes and a trough or J-feeder. Love it, this is what I'm going to use. It's small and unobtrusive, very cheap and easy to do and everything the Tupperware containers are not. No eggs are getting hung up on that on a tilted floor cage with egg catcher. Might just have to fasten it to the back with wire so it doesn't slide forward on a tilted floor cage. Love your logic too "end caps? Lol, too expensive and no need, this thin little cap will do just fine and only a buck". Bravo, I've done the same with other projects with PVC too, just glue or caulk (or tape like you did) a blow off cap or those thin slip over caps (frequently blue or red in color) like they also sell in with the ABS and PVC piping, if doing something which does not require strength or good watertight sealing.

      Would love to see a picture of your feeder. Love this idea, having them on the outside of the cage

      @@Sheilazy1 Wish I had a picture, but I have not built one yet and don't have any Quail yet. I would like to get them come spring or summer, when others local to me, are breeding again. Seems nobody is breeding around me in the winter, but the few connections I have found here (just small scale private Quail keepers), said that come spring they will be breeding again. I have most of the supplies to build cages but haven't done any building yet.
      I really don't want to order them from elsewhere further away from me and have them shipped in winter, too cold and they eggs won't likely be viable due to that. There are sellers online, who ship them from a few hours South of me, but with winter and shipping, I think the chances of them being viable are low and nobody guarantees viability of the eggs, so...... I just don't want to waste my money. The more local, the better. I would actually like to by chicks/live Quail to start and then get them laying and hatch my own, rather than start with eggs and hatch them. I want to ease into this and do hatching after I have got some live ones and get used to keeping them. I'm so new to this and inexperienced.

    Nice job! We are looking to raise quail when we relocate to our rural homestead next summer. Thanks for the videos, I plan to tap into your expertise. Have a blessed day

    That looks like a great idea for the chicken brooder, too. Those trays from the feed store hold too much feed down in the bottom, so I had LOTS of waste, my first time out with baby chicks. Thanks!

    I used my Drexel with sandpaper tip to smooth out those sharp edges. Was very fast and effective!

    I made one of these and it has been feeding my quail with zero waste for over a year. I made it as shown at first but then rotated the pipe with the holes so the holes are on the top of the tube. The birds don't mind and have suffered no damage to their necks or feathers. Its an awesome design. Is there any reason whythe design wouldn't work for chicken? I'm thinking if i use the same exact design but since the chickens like to scratch and roost I'd make a shelf over the pipe with the holes. this would allow access from the side, but prevent the birds from roosting on the pipe. what do you think?

    Question should the holes be smaller? I have some 6’ pvc pipes around. Glenn thanks

    Thanks for the vid. Just a little extra way to prevent ALL waste, put some chick mesh wire inside the pipe over the food once it is full. It stops ALL wastage

    I built this feeder but filling it is a pain in the butt because all the feed spills out through the holes. I solved that by putting tape over the holes before pouring the feed down the tube but I wonder if there’s an easier way Well I’m not using all my packing tape.How do you spell yours without making a mess?

    Thanks for the video. This is helpful. We just found some baby quails outside our house. What should we feed them today? I don't really know how old they are, but they can't fly and they easily fit in a kids hand. They are about 2.5 inches tall.

      Wow! You found some baby quail? I suggest getting them into a shelter, like a big tupperware storage bin or a cardboard box, get them some water and feed them a "gamebird/showbird" crumble feed that is at least 24% protein. If you can't get the feed right away, give them some greens and fruit (lettuce, apples, etc.). Some hard boiled eggs would be good too for some protein. No avocados!!! They are toxic to quail. Good luck raising the little guys!

      Fortunately they are like baby chickens in that they don't need a mother quail to show them the ropes. If the mother is gone or has abandoned them for some reason, then you can brood and raise them to maturity. The food suggestions by GilpinLunatic are right on the spot.

    How high would these feeders be placed from the flooring of the cage ?

  • @KarenmitchellANI
    @KarenmitchellANI 6 лет назад

    Would covering up 1/4 of the holes work, or covering one side? Surely adult ones wouldn't fit in there, they must be large holes. Unless you have tint quails. Mine wouldn't fit in there.
    I'm building one similar, only mine I'll be able to fill from the outside and last a few more days :)

    i attached mine on the outside of the cage so do not have to open door to cage and bother the birds plus it is real easy to fill the feeder

    How can you make this where you can add the food without going into the cage, like from the outside in?

    • @pershop4950
      @pershop4950 7 лет назад +1

      Use a 90-degree connector on one end, then a PVC connection system (straight or whatever else you need to get it to where you want it to be) up to the height or area where you want to drop in the feed.

      It's steeper and deeper, which means the birds are less able to fling food everywhere, and also it needs to be refilled less.
