- Current Work is a lecture series featuring leading figures in the worlds of architecture, urbanism, design, and art.
Hiroshi Sugimoto is a multidisciplinary artist who increasingly works in architecture. For Current Work, he discussed projects including: Enoura Observatory; Go-Oh Shrine; and Sugimoto Versailles.
The lecture is followed by a conversation with Billie Tsien, principal of Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects | Partners.
At the beginning, I was surprised and mesmerized by Sugimoto sensei's work. Then, I realized that being very much zen in its appearance, his work is completely anti zen, because of its pretentiousness. He's more of a western artist than a Japanese one, despite his place of birth, a very interesting individual.
There sure ain't no wabi in his sabi, or is it sabi in his wabi?
How is his work anti-zen? And what makes any artist's work more Western than Eastern?
