Thank you! The recommendations for logging and paces are really helpful
Yes! Thank you for making this. I had someone approach me about buddy reading something recently and I had no idea where to begin. Hearing about the different approaches to a buddy read was super helpful! :)
You're quite welcome :)
I like your tip with a chapter per week. Readers have different reading speeds and life schedules. By understanding that end of each week (ie, Friday) buddies can meet up to discuss the chapter. This way, the system meets at a checkpoint and good time to meet up. Buddy read is not so much about a book but developing a friendship through the enjoyment of having friends reading the same book.
Yes! I am glad you did this. It will be great resource for people like me who has/had no clue what is up! Thank you for showing me the ropes on voxer and I look forward to our next buddy read :)
Me, too :D
Such a wonderful, informative video Amanda! I love the idea of buddy reads, but I've always been too intimidating to seek them out, mainly because I wasn't sure how to connect with the other person. But you've given some really great insights, thanks! :)
You're ever so welcome :)
I am doing my first buddy read currently, so this is really good advice to help figure out options for communication.
I'm glad the video is helpful :) What are you buddy reading?
+Amanda Center (IntrovertX) I am doing a buddy read with Fandom and Books on A Discovery Of Witches by Deborah Harkness.
How awesome! I hope you both have fun :D
Thank you! I made a video about not understanding Buddy Reads a month or so ago, and this is exactly what I was looking for. I hope others find it and spend less time being confused than I did :)
You're quite welcome :)
Thank you Amanda for this helpful video. I hope I'll be able to do some buddy reads soon :). Seeing as I don't have a vlog or blog, it's sometimes hard to find a reading partner. And I love talking about books. From time to time, I envy booktubers all those possibilities to meet people who love similar titles. Also, I wish that there would be more book clubs around me. Still, Vortex sounds like a great application and I hope I'll be able to test it. Once again, thank you for the tips.
It's Voxer ;) I'm glad you found this video helpful!!
+Amanda Center (IntrovertX) Omg, such a stupid mistake. I was writing the previous comment in a hurry and didn't notice it. Still, thank you for pointing it out :).
Love this. Buddy reading is on my radar.
It's really fun! We should do a buddy read sometime :D
Would love that! I am starting a new job, so perhaps after Sept (because we are mad busy right now) would work.
Sounds lovely! :D
I'm new to booktube this year and I have done a few buddy reads and I love sharing my thoughts with another person, it's so much fun x
I absolutely agree :)
Thanks, just what I was looking for.
You're welcome! Enjoy your buddy reading :D
and a blossoming panda sounds so cute! especially if it's a baby awww.
Totally a blossoming baby panda ;)
I could have really used this guide 2 years ago! So helpful. I do a lot of buddy reads using Twitter DMs and Goodreads messages. Voice messages on Voxer are still tough for me because I like to plan out what I say! :-D And I totally agree chapters per day or week is my favorite way to sync up (or # of stories per day, if reading a collection). I can't stop in the middle of a chapter either. And I really prefer to keep my reading in sync with my buddy, though I know that's hard if people's reading paces are so different.
Sometimes I take bullet point notes before I leave a Voxer message! Helps me feel more brain organized :)
I agree it's great to have chapters be the marker rather than pages and also love the voice feature on voxer the best. Love that it leads to wonderful tangents and also it's much easier than typing. So glad you made this video because starting out this year I was so nervous to do buddy reads because I had no idea what they would be like. A video like this would have come in so handy! Very excited to read St Lucy with you :D
I'm excited for our buddy read, too XD
I loved seeing this! I've actually only buddy read books with you so far! It's so much fun to do, I want to do it with more people! Great video, so helpful for people that feel anxious about starting with buddy reads!
I didn't know you've only buddy read with me! Makes me feel so special :)
I love buddy reading! I usually like both just reading it and telling each other when we finish and talk about it then, I read a lot faster than my friends.
:D
I never got the chance to have a buddy read with someone but I've always been curious to know how it's all supposed to go! This just made me want to find someone for a buddy read so I guess I'll be rewatching this video very soon. This was helpful, thank you so much. :]
You're very welcome :)
Our buddy read made me want to do so many more! I'm trying to buddy read more often. I think the most challenging thing for me is setting one up, not knowing what book someone else is wanting to read at a particular time. My best method so far is to watch a haul video and go "Oh, I have that too, we should read it together," or something to that effect. I might need a better system.
That's pretty much my system, too. Otherwise, if it's a buddy who I've been talking to on RUclips or other social media, we chat about what we feel like reading together :)
Lol I love the ending of your videos. Yep, I'm a blossoming panda! Lol. Cause they're my fav animals. :)
I'm glad you enjoy my weirdness :)
Thank you so much for this! Very helpful as this is my very first time to buddy read ✨💛
This is so helpful, thank you!
You're ever so welcome :)
Great video and so helpful! I wish this would've been around for my first buddy read!
Thank you :)
Such a great video! I've been wanting to do some buddy reads but haven't done one so wasn't sure how to structure them. I will be checking out more of your videos too.
I hope your first buddy read goes well!
I would love to see a video from you where you talk about re-reading! I absolutely love re-reading books but I feel like it's not a big thing on booktube?
I think you're right. I've got a video idea in the works, so it's only a matter of time :)
very good video. thank you
This is so interesting! I'm trying to increase my ability to read consistently so I've been doing this for the last few months with people (i have 4 going right now) and I'm really enjoying it! Sounds a bit odd, but if you ever find yourself in need of a buddy, I'm over here :)
"Where I chat at your fave about things" love it. Ahah
:)
Hi Amanda, Happy Pyjama Sunday! I've been a long time book tube watcher but I haven't always been consistent with commenting on the videos of my fave booktubers! I'm trying to be better about it so I can get to know the people I watch…and maybe one day I can do a buddy read yay!
A buddy read is absolutely in your future! You comment quite a bit on my videos, Alisya, and you're always very lovely :) Thanks for being an awesome subscriber!
Thanks for this! Have my first coming up in July and didn't know what it was 😮. I agreed because "buddy read" sounded fun...thanks for the explanation. Still sounds fun 😁
I hope you enjoy your first buddy read :D
:)
Oh man this video is great! Never done a buddy read because i had no idea how to do it. But always wanted to. I would love to do a buddy read with you sometime. No sure of a book though :s
Buddy read absolutely! I'll be filming a bookshelf tour sometime soon, so keep an eye out for my TBR shelves :)
This was an amazing video, dear Amanda! :) I've been doing quite a few buddy reads as well - but I never knew there were so many ways to do it hahah :) Ive just been using the chat-function on twitter - but I finally dl'ed voxer, so Im definitely going to try out the 'speaking'-messages - that sounds amazing! And your point about the mails for reading classics was also very good :) So THANK YOU for this!! :) And I look forward to our buddy read of Villette this fall!
I, too, look forward to our Villette and Winter's Tales buddy reads :D I'm glad you liked the video!
P.S. We've also got the Dead Mountain buddy read in Nov/Dec XD So many buddy reads!!!!
Ahh yes! We do! Oh Im looking VERY much forward to that one - it sounds SO exciting!!! :)
This was a really great video! Thank you for helping me understand the different options :) I really want to do more buddy reads, but I'm not sure how to find other people who want to do buddy reads with me. Any tips for how to find people? xoxo
You could make a video asking for buddies to read X, Y and Z books with you over the next few months. Another way is to ask in the comments section of a book haul video. If someone just hauled a book you'd like to read with them, you have an opportunity. Once you've got a couple of BookTube buddies, like other creators or long-time subscribers, you can do bunches of buddy reads with them :)
This was so helpful! Thank you! - L
You're very welcome :)
Thanks for the awesome explanation on buddy reading! I would love to buddy read, but I don't have any "real life" friends who read as much as I do. Do you have any tips on how to find people who are up for buddy reading? Thanks Amanda!
If you see a BookTuber's haul video, you could ask to buddy read one of their new books with them. That's what I do still with BookTubers I haven't talked to outside of the comments section of their videos. Once you've met some bookish friends online you could ask if they want to do a buddy read and then both of you pick the book together. There's no harm in asking someone to buddy read with you - they might be incredibly pleased! I hope that helps :)
I'd love to do buddy reads but I don't read many books that are read by booktubers/people online😂
I'd recommend to keep looking and if someone ever reads something you're interested it, ask to buddy read :)
I've only done a couple of buddy reads. I'd love to do more. the voxer walkie talkie thing still makes me feel awkward 😂 think I just don't like my voice 😁
I'm sorry to hear that :/ I hope one day you'll be confident when using the voice messages
i feel this way too, i'm getting more used to it bc of snapchat but i even get nervous on answering machines or voicemails, i can do it but i have to psych myself up lol i just get tongue tied and anxious 😝
chicklebird I think a lot of people feel similarly to you :)
I think the only problem with me is that I'll get busy and not pick up the book and then my buddy has already finished or almost done and then I get a bit of anxiety like I HAVE TO GET FINISHEd!
That is tricky :/ Could you be buddy reading at too fast of a pace for you to keep up?
How do I find someone who would want to buddy read with me though?
Start with people you know in person, people you've chatted with on Goodreads or those in the comments section of other BookTube videos :) When watching haul or TBR videos, you can comment asking to read a book they mentioned with them. Just ask!
