They weren't taught English so they didn't know what USA meant, they just thought it looked cool, so the boy wore it to school. He was punished in school for wearing a USA shirt, his parents were punished physically. The other North Koreans who escaped have similar stories of abuse and of starvation and violence for even looking at Kim Jong Un strange.
